US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
And isn't Japan's suicide about twice as high as the mortality rate due to guns? That doesn't stop them from claiming #1 on the average longevity. There's probably about 10 different reasons I can think of that better explain life expectancy than the capitalism health-care nonsense in the OP. Japan's suicide rate isn't about the gun laws (from what I've read), rather, it's a cultural thing. Suicide is much more acceptable and dishonor is avoided at all costs. He didn't mean it was because gun laws, he meant Japan's suicide rate is higher than deaths attributed to fire arms in the USA I've never paid more than like $60 for a prescription, and even then it was an optional thing. The only experience I have with American drug prices is what I've seen with Paxil, so it's pretty limited. But from what I saw, it's minimum 20 dollars more in the USA buying generic non-prescription paxil pills. Here it's $40 for a month of 10 mg without using insurance (with prescription), USA generic non prescription = $60 online

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
My brother had his teeth fixed (they were badly messed up, major surgery) in Juarez. Yeah, there's something called medical tourism, where people go to other countries to pay less for major surgeries.

Chile Miners Ready To Get Rescued
Made even more insane by the fact that they don't have books or tv or internet or anything. Damn, after they've been through this they can sit through anything

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
Ah, good point. There's the catch. Also, I've heard the drug prices are ridiculously high in USA, anyone Americans feel like giving some input to that? I was looking at Paxil prices online a couple weeks ago on I think American sites. They had a month of generic brand Paxil at like $250+ a month, whereas at my Wal-Mart pharmacy I got a month supply for $40 with no insurance.

Gaining weight
Just to make it clear if it already isn't by what Powman said, it's 3500 excess calories, so eating 3500 calories one day won't gain you a pound if your body needs say 2000 calories a day to maintain it's current weight. Realistically, 1 - 2 pounds gained a week is pretty good
-
Chile Miners Ready To Get Rescued
Because it's the first time people have been rescued from a mine incident after so long, and it's quite amazing that they haven't gone crazy or all gotten diseased from their own waste and what not.

This may be a good way to handle privatized healthcare too, though I'd be surprised if it isn't an option. Well with insurance you really are paying over time, just a lot more than you would in a public system. Assuming your insurance doesn't deny your claim. Also, an idea would keep your privatized system for anyone who wants to pay extra for it, and make everything else universal. Have an option

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
I'd rather pay a little over my life time rather than get slammed with a huge bill. Plus, it helps the maximum amount of people while hurting the least amount. I can't think of many better things for my taxes to go to than helping someone get health care

Gaining weight
If you can't gain weight, you are overestimating the amount you eat. http://www.livestrong.com/ Sign up, go to calorie tracker -> My Daily Plate, then add everything you ate on a specific day. If it's less than 3000 calories you aren't eating enough. Drink lots of milk. Lots. And 5 tablespoons of olive oil = 600 calories

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
Life expectancy would be a good one, although I guess it's kind of, subjective?. The point is though, countries with universal (and every other country on the graphs) are spending less on health care than USA is, and ALL citizens get access to health care. Preventative health care ftw E: Here's a ranking based on 8 measures, but it's for 1997 http://www.photius.com/rankings/world_health_performance_ranks.html I'm going to bed now and cba to find a recent one e 2: Also, there's this http://www.allcountries.org/ranks/preventable_deaths_country_ranks_1997-1998_2002-2003_2008.html

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
Because it's interesting to read people's experiences, and not numbers all the time. It tells things like wait time too. Also, do you dispute that universal health care patients pay nothing or next to nothing on the spot for care while Americans who are uninsured (and insured as well) must pay hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars? IF they even seek care? Because that is basically what that website is saying. Here's some facts I guess

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
SA? Something Awful? Because when I think factually correct, I think Something Awful. Maybe you will notice the website name. Plural of Anecdote. Anecdote. I never mentioned fact. There was a thread dozens of pages long about the exact same thing (it is now archived), which is where the stories came from. There was and is no incentive for people to waste their time lying about it. Also, to put another kind of myth to rest, I and 90% of the people I know put going to the doctor off unless we absolutely need to.

US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy
As a Canadian it's nice knowing that any time I seriously injure myself, I don't need to worry about going bankrupt. And I'm proud to be taxed to keep our system running, it ain't perfect but it's better than the alternative. I hope one day you Americans can get it too, I've heard such terrible stories about medical care there. Here's a site that has anecdotal stories from universal vs USA system, submitted by SA users http://www.pluralofanecdote.com/#

That's a hard lesson to learn.
I heard a talk radio host say the same thing tonight - and I agree. They should have not charged him $75 - but billed him for payroll, water costs, gasoline and medical bills (should any firefighter needed medical attention), etc. I remember reading that the guy did offer to pay for the entire cost of putting out the fire, I'll try to find a link when I get home

Pregnant after 50?
I won't disagree about the teen mother thing, but it can be harmful to have a child at such an old age. Complications become more likely the older you get, and I'd imagine that it gets a lot harder on your body at 50. Of course, if the woman is prepared for the possibility of having to take care of a child with a disability, they are free to do what they want. If not, well, they're still free to do what they want
