Same-Sex Marriage
I have several gay friends and would like to see it legalized someday but as Reb said, it's not really something the Government can force upon churches. So at best gays would be allowed civil unions, which isn't really what they're after, they're after the benefits that marriage bring...benefits that private organizations/companies have the right to refuse them. Now I'm not positive on all the laws involved, but here's my stance - allow homosexuals to live together*, be allowed to adopt, and receive the same federal benefits**. If they're provided all of that, and they're truly in love, they shouldn't give a rip whether or not they're technically married, because love is supposed to be beyond that right? *I believe it's currently illegal in some states for an unmarried couple to reside together (obviously it's not enforced very strictly, but still can be enforced by landlords). **This is another debate in itself because federal benefits don't come from nowhere, they come from tax dollars...so the more people receiving benefits the more tax dollars it is and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't be happy with that.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
Even in those cases it's not a problem, just grow a pair and straight up ask the girl out. If she's into you she'll say yes, if not she'll come up with some excuse so as not to let you down too harshly. But in the end there's only 2 results, yes or no, and quite honestly most girls will say yes to someone who's confident - ie someone who straight up asks - versus someone who's not.

Is It Really That Cold?
Y Guy, there are plenty of ways we can get renewable energy that are practical via nature. The sun comes out every day, gravity is free, as is wind. What the world needs to do (or at least the more developed countries) is focus on harnessing the power of the sun, gravity, and wind at a much higher ratio than what we're doing now. As for global climate change, sure it may be a problem (as someone's already mentioned - the earth goes through natural periods of climate change), but I think it should be the 'experts' doing the research on it and keeping the results to themselves until they know with a good degree of certainty what the deal is. Until then stop all the propaganda, yes we should all be making an effort to pollute less, recycle more, reduce our carbon footprint etc, etc, but we shouldn't be doing all that because of "global warming", rather because it's simply more logical.

Coldest Winter Ever?
We got several more inches of snow today and for once I was kinda glad to see it since right away it just barely covered all the ice on the sidewalks and people were slipping left and right, entertaining to watch nonetheless.

Reveal Confessions, Secrets & Regrets...
Not being attracted to a certain ethnicity isn't racist by any means. It's really no different than liking a specific eye color, hair color, breast/bum size. Personally I've seen beauty in almost every ethnicity, it's just some have it more frequent than others.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
If I ever caught one of my friend's cheating I'd straight up confront them to hell and back, and would make damn sure they went and told their boyfriend/girlfriend that they did. Oh and Panzerlord, don't worry about not being a pro kisser at 14...it's not like there's a sign on your back saying "Never been kissed". I'm 21 (junior in college) and nobody would guess that I'm a virgin and have never had a girlfriend, let alone kissed a girl outside of random drunk chics coming up to me and frenching for like 10 seconds.

What do you do to relax ?
There's a variety of things I do to relax depending on what sort of relaxation I need. If I need to completely clear my mind I'll go for a drive at night and either listen to Celtic Woman or nothing, if it's raining that's a bonus. Sometimes I'll get back from classes and to unwind for the day I'll do the dishes or some laundry, something productive but requires no thinking. Lastly (this will probably sound strange) I do homework. I'm a huge procrastinator so about the only worries I do have are whether or not I'll get something done on time, which 90% of the time is homework, so when I actually get around to doing it (provided it's not super last minute and I'm rushing) it's relaxing. It's weird, I don't enjoy doing homework but I find it very relaxing and I'm able to fall right asleep after I finish. But yeah, most enjoyable form of relaxation definitely goes to driving at night.

Coldest Winter Ever?
More like global cooling. <_< Luckily, winters here never go below 0 C. Summers here, however, reached nearly 40 C once. South Dakota is very strange climate wise in that the low for the year and the high for the year are typically separated by a good 130 degrees F, potentially 145 degree difference (-30 to 115).
-
Coldest Winter Ever?
I've lived in South Dakota my entire life (21 and a half years) and this is the coldest I can remember it ever being. I'm talking consistently cold, yes I know it gets below zero every year but in past years we'd get cold spells that last a week or so then go away and come back later, this one's lasted upwards of 2 months. And when I say a cold spell I don't mean just below freezing, I mean single digit to negative temps for highs.

Bullied into suicide
I have many very close friends/relatives who've contemplated suicide at least once, some have halfway attempted it, and I used to be adamantly against suicide for reasons others have already mentioned - with a little time, initiative, and effort people are capable of making their own lives a hell of a lot better. But the more I thought about it, the more (can't think of a better word) accepting of it I became. Sad to say it but for some people suicide is perfectly understandable and I can't say I blame them. For this particular case probably not, but if you just look at it from her perspective she probably came to America with it being the whole "land of opportunity" in mind and discovered that her opportunity here was to get bashed day in and day out for no reason whatsoever and decided to take her chances with death (some people commit suicide because they believe in a life after death and curiosity gets the better of them while they're going through a rough patch). Who knows. So yes, it sucks. No, this didn't really bring out any emotions in me because (as already pointed out) this sort of [cabbage] happens globally and daily. And hey, I'm happy for that girl in the sense that she doesn't have to put up with it anymore and is at more peace than most of us.

Coldest Winter Ever?
Yeah I have a friend in Washington complaining about it being too warm there since he likes the cold so I told him to swap places with me. :P And if it weren't for having to walk 10 blocks in it I wouldn't mind it near as much...maybe I just need to get fat so I have some natural insulation lol.

Coldest Winter Ever?
I realize it's not the coldest recorded winter ever, but it sure as hell wouldn't surprise me if it was. Living in South Dakota I've had the luxury of experiencing above freezing temperatures once this month, yep just one time when it got to a scorching 36 degrees. The typical day this year however has been highs ranging from 5-15 with lows most days being below zero (I think the lowest so far has been -23 not factoring windchill). This arctic spell has been here since mid December and is showing no signs of letting up (how can it when the land is covered in over a foot of snow?). So tell me, how many of you have seen someone get pushed backwards on an icy sidewalk due to wind? Or seen someone wear full snowsuit to class and instead of getting made fun of people were jealous of them? Or seen people's beard's get frozen on their walk to class? I guess this discussion is for all of those who hate cold. As for those of you someplace warm right now, . Current temp is -3 F with a low tonight of -12 F.

I don't believe it
3/3 with zero hesitation, that's what growing up in the Midwest gets me I guess. As for not eating something if you don't know what's in it, as long as I know it's safe to eat and it tastes good, I don't care what's in it. But seriously, people not knowing what's common knowledge to most isn't anything surprising - if you want some more examples of this just go play Conquiztador (www.conquiztador.com - btw it's also a fun game and you learn A LOT provided you retain some of it). But yeah, basically it just asks you and whoever else is playing a question, some of them are hard, some are average difficulty, and some are down right easy...and there will be people who are way off on common sense questions. *If you want visual evidence of some of the idiots that exist in the world today - www.peopleofwalmart.com

Our Future Professions
I'm currently 3 years into getting a degree in Civil Engineering and everything's going fine and all but if I could go back and do things differently I definitely would. I don't wanna say I regret going to college because it has helped shape me into the person I am today (mostly the people I met at college versus college itself, but still) but yeah, looking back on it I wish I would've just left the country upon graduating high school and gone around the world doing volunteer work or something like that. In all honesty I'd be happy going to some small village in a European country and staying with a farming family exchanging my labor for food and housing...do that for a few years so I can learn their language and get to know some of the locals then move on and repeat that somewhere else. Either that or doing volunteer work with the Peace Corp or something. Basically my ideal life is one that's simple, I don't wanna spend my life making money so I could buy a bigger house and a better car but rather traveling the world and experiencing others' lifestyles. So right now it's looking like I'll get my degree in Civil Engineering, continue working with the company I currently work for (right now I'm just an engineering technician) and pay off my loans. Then once I am debt free I probably will try and pursue a lifestyle as mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph. Oh and I'd have a video recorder too because I love making movies so I'd probably do some sort of video diary.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
This has pretty much happened to me a couple of times now, once with a girl I didn't know and once with a really good friend that likes me but I'm not looking for a girlfriend right now. I guess there's something about drunk chics and telling secrets.

New Jersey legalizes medical marijuana...and bans gay marriage
I discussed this matter with a friend and I'll sum up his take on it: He first asked why they want to call it marriage then pointed out the two reasons - to make it synonymous with the religious aspect (which is "[developmentally delayed]iculous") or to get access to the benefits for marriage, provided by the government and private businesses. So if we assume it's the latter, monetary benefit to one person is never free - it comes at the cost of others. Also, private businesses have whatever right they want to encourage religious practices...and as far as the government goes, the only purpose for marriage benefits is to encourage people to begin a family and such. Just thought I'd mention that because it brings some new points to the discussion. As for this, This is what I think is the biggest obstacle facing legalizing marijuana here in the US, a lot of people are narrow minded coupled with misconceptions. If there is no way that we could possibly convince you of something, especially something like a pothead not being a junkie, then you are in fact narrow minded and quite frankly not worth debating with. And adding to the economic benefit marijuana could have, the United States is absolutely [developmentally delayed]ed for not incorporating industrial hemp into it's agriculture.

It's illegal to be a transexual? or a cyclist? Not sure I quite understand. But um as for beastiality I really don't care if it's legal or not, but it'd be difficult to prove they're not harming the animals and until they can 100% prove that there is consent and they aren't harming them, it won't become legal.

I highly doubt you are educated in cannabis if you're saying that. Cannabis does not harm the brain as you say it does. The ONLY thing that it has does is give those people with a pre-disposition to schizophrenia a slightly higher chance of actually developing it. Yes, that's right...but only if they are already PRE-DISPOSITIONED. This "mind-altering state" you say it puts you in is not bad for the brain whatsoever. It has zero negative effects. Cannabis has never killed one person in its 10,000 year history as a naturally occurring plant and it never will. So please, spare me when you try to even put it anywhere near alcohol or cigarettes. The only thing wrong with cannabis is the negative stigmas associated with it that were created by the government's illegitimate cannabis laws. I wasn't referring to it harming the development of the brain when I was talking about it having mind altering affects. I was comparing it to alcohol in the sense that you shouldn't be allowed to drive while high, whereas smoking cigarettes and driving is fine. What I was referring to with my first statement tho is that there have been studies done that proves THC harms the development of the brain for younger people but eventually that's no longer an issue.

archimage, your examples aren't the greatest. When a father abuses his child there is harm involved, I feel compelled to step in because that child is being harmed. When a homosexual couple...exists...nobody's being harmed. Some people are offended, yes, but I get offended by a lot of things too and most are legal. Outlawing something solely because you think it's "morally wrong" is just plain absurd.

New Jersey legalizes medical marijuana...and bans gay marriage
The country will *never* be rid of all drugs, unless the government does something extremely radical and quite frankly, bad for the country. I say legalize marijuana for 21 and older and make the punishments progressively worse (for the kid and/or the parents) the more underage they are. For instance maybe give a 19 year old a fine of some sort, but a 13 year old can maybe go to juvie while the parents are nailed with a considerably larger fine than that 19 year old got. In fact I think they should implement that sort of system for alcohol as well.

Favorite thing about the opposite sex?
I hope you're joking, or maybe you meant to say that the best thing that they can do for you is sex? If you can really boil down the human race (or half of it) to a measly carnal desire, I think your view on humanity is even more hopeless than mine. No, it's the favourate thing for hetrosexual people. Thread doesn't say "what traits you like" but rather your favourate/best. Only if it's with the right person tho and "the opposite sex" is referring to all of the opposite sex, so we're meant to discuss it in general. I'd much rather go to a movie or something with my close female friends than have sex with some random girl.

Favorite thing about the opposite sex?
Replying in direct answer to the topic title: My favorite thing about women is that I find I am far more comfortable in their company than I am with those of my own gender, and I really appreciate that. This. I live with one other straight guy, two gay guys, and two girls...the one I feel least comfortable around is the other straight guy (except for when it comes to sports). Whenever we go out, more often then not I'll be sitting in a van with 7 or 8 people and realize "wow, I'm the only one in this van who's attracted to females..." because there'll be a couple gay guys, several girls, and myself; but I don't mind it one bit. In fact I prefer it that way. Also whenever we go out to eat, most girls don't eat all their food so more for me. :)

This is exactly why it should be legalized, regulated, and illegal to people under 18. It's easier to get weed from a friend or dealer illegally than it is to buy alcohol from a store when you're not of age. This is because the system is regulated and governed. That doesn't happen in a black market. Try 21, smoking pot in the teenage years isn't smart because it harms the development of the brain. Also due to the mind altering affects I'd put it alongside alcohol versus cigarettes. I also think you should have to take some sort of test to get some sort of license before you're allowed to use it. Hell, there are a lot of drugs that can be both safe and have a positive affect on your life if used appropriately/responsibly.

Favorite thing about the opposite sex?
Last semester there were four guys and one and two halves (1 lived here, 2 came over enough to be considered living here) girls living in our house. This semester it's 3 guys and 3 and a half girls...I praise females for being tidier than men. Last semester my roommate never did dishes, rarely did laundry, and never helped clean. Another guy just put all his [cabbage] on our dining room table all the time and his room was a terrible mess. But girls for the most part are clean (sometimes it gets annoying if they're ocd about it, but that's better than extremely messy I guess). Another thing I like about my female friends are the hugs they give. I love hugs, especially a good one. :) Edit: Not trying to mislead anyone and pretend I'm not that big on the physical aspects of girls because yes I definitely am into good physique, nice boobs, and nice eyes as much as the rest of you.
