Okay, so I understand that plasma swords are a little impractical and, with the required portable power source, a little bulky. But it cauterizes wounds and prevents bleeding while completely obliterating nervous tissue. I say sword just because they are badass, you say rifle because they are actually useful. So lets combine the two. A rifle that operates under the same plasma-capturing magnetic field technology, and instead of keeping the burning substance as a coherent blade, you shoot it. Badassery and pragmatism packaged into one (presumably chrome and sleek) weapon of zombie destruction. Hell, when things get hairy in a close combat situation you could disrupt the field with a magnet yourself, and watch how the barrel of your gun spits diffuse fire into the crowd. Though when it bounces off of surfaces and into your face, things could get problematic.

Lightsabers. I mean, the plasma swords we have now can be disturbed by a kitchen magnet and spew flaming hot death upon its wielder, but I don't think zombies'd know that.

The pain of the current genetically defunct generation culled by the tools of farsighted leaders and, if you were in charge of labels, 'murderers', would allow for the purer gene pool of the future. One generation's genetically inferior all ash in the chimneys of incinerators, and a path of infinity and bodily clean humans would pierce through time. Do you see where the lines of morality begin to blur? Do not speak of objective values.

The smartest person would have taught modesty--and I would commit a crime by speaking his name. So he will remain immortal in everything except name, his knowledge drowning the legacy of his identity, exalted only by the curiosity and intelligence displayed by those like him. He... is an ideal. And he... does not exist.

Christopher Poole is Time's Most Influential Person

I guess its just something meant to catch your eye, before ambushing you with a reference to that Game about not knowing about the Game. Speaking of which, what exactly is the Game? I'm guessing that you lose if you know that you are playing it, but I'm uncertain of the rules, and so uncertain of the Game and my part in it. If my hypothesis is correct, however, I would be in a state of perpetual win with my current mindset. -
Oh, come on, this is a forum, where sociological results record and preserve themselves! Who among us has not contemplated an experiment? Though usually, you wouldn't completely destroy all of your results by creating another thread to reveal to the subjects that they were being experimented upon.

A potential cure for HIV - manipulating the human genome

Spot-activation is impossible? I know several genes act as activators for the transcription of others, but did the paper say that any protein but retrocyclin will be produced? -
Free weights are better. You need to use fine muscles to keep yourself stabilized-- With a machine, rubber and metal take on the stress that would otherwise have been felt by the flesh.

De Sable-- Why jump straight to killing? If your point is to cleanse the gene pool of debilitating disease, why not just mass sterilization? Wait, we don't even need that. Gene therapy will be or already is available for several diseases, and others are being cataloged and analyzed. We can heal the holes in our pool without robbing someone of the chance to continue their bloodline (it's important to some people : /). Why kill? Or do you really think they have a great negative impact of society's productivity? Also, as many have stated, Down's Syndrome is a spontaneous defect that isn't really heritable.

Rent a copy of Assassin's Creed. While in-game, and amongst a crowd, push B and walk through them. Follow the main character's movements closely... And then emulate. The 'Gentle Push' is the solution to what seems like an explosive anger.

Do you believe intimacy and emotional bonding to be separates? If so, go ahead. You won't feel guilty or anything. If not, you might become attached when no attachment is wanted and you will end up worse for it. I personally think that the molding of two bodies means a molding of two beings--though this might not hold to be true for you.

Meh. If it ever does become a pandemic, it's at its initial stages. Everyone'd have a few subconscious happy thoughts of school or work closing, I guess. Though we'll all wake up when viral infection and lethality ramps up. Though we should be awake now, seeing as a member of our forum seems to have contracted it already. Speaking of which--Doomsavenger, get well soon. A weak remedy, but all we forum-goers have to offer are words, really. V Well damn. You too.

Now that the threat of sickness is real for everyone on the planet... I wonder how those proponents of 'population-cleansing' disease feel about the situation. I am not insulting them--I just want to know how minds change when the theoretical jumps into the real.

World War S: An Oral History of the Swine-Virus Wars Sorry to perpetuate the Zombie theme of the early thread, but I couldn't resist.

Well, [cabbage]. Need to warn family. My brother tells me that there's been nothing on the news about it? What the hell? What are these news stations' priorities?

When 'selfishness' includes acts done to help others in order to feel good, it ceases to have negative connotations. In fact, if I was to state with certainty that my acts of selfishness are helping others, I'd be quite proud. It'd mean I'm hardwired to help other people. Edit: Deja vu. Have I said this before?
-
Or, in other words, we are selfish creatures. Many times, it makes us feel happy to help others and better our society. In fact, many of us bend our lives around trying to capture that form of happiness. So yes, we are selfish in our selflessness. And selfless in our selfishness.

I like the rush. Give a point to each of your actions. I like to spend as much time as possible relaxing, and 'smelling the roses'. After which I realize I have stuff to do--and so what can you do? Hurry, hurry, hurry. Doesn't seem stressful to me. Maybe a little challenging at times.

What if someone came up to you and said you are a waste of resources? Does that justify them murdering you? That argument can be used for any terminally ill patient. If your daughter was diagnosed with a deadly cancer and she had six months to live, I doubt you'd think it would be in your best interest to have her die ASAP to "prevent the bond from becoming stronger and the loss from becoming greater". My daughter and I would have already had a life together, and I would've loved her. I would want to savor her remaining moments. The bond would already be at it's greatest, and I would have something capable of bonding to actually love. This baby is a new addition to Myah's life. It could have been regarded as either object, or new being. I believe it to be an object, incapable of ever being considered human. She chose to see it as a person. And is bonding with something that can't bond back. She will feel like I would with my hypothetical cancer-ridden daughter if this continues, as in, she would be emotionally ravaged. It would cause unnecessary emotional pain for her to create an attachment with this object and have it ripped away. It would be better for her to realize that Faith may as well be a teddy bear, and move on to another child who can actually appreciate her love.

I? There is nothing wrong in the short run. She is a source of joy in a very depressing time, and her movements are a symbol of hope. Maybe she is all the mother has to even stay alive. But the doctors, who I'm going to assume are right at this moment in time, have diagnosed anencephaly. Meaning that death is inevitable within a short period of time. The longest living baby with this condition was 2 years old, I believe. It will be worse for the mother to create such a bond with this baby because she will be taken away so soon. Though I see now that what's done is done, and there is no changing the situation. Unless the mother herself is convinced of reality, carries out the termination herself, and feels no sadness because she realizes that Faith is not alive. You could allow natural death, but maybe the mother would have still attributed human qualities to the child at the time of death. That would be devastating. I was simply trying to see what would've been best in the long run. But I am an objective spectator, and am not tangled in Myah's web of emotions. I do not have a choice in the matter, though I do wish to express my views here. Maybe I can directly contact her, but something tells me she will not want to listen. And hey, there may be the slight chance that she is right, and that the doctors misdiagnosed Faith. But at present time, I do not trust her exclamations and put them down to delusion.

Its Springtime for Hitler and Germany. True. This is one of those situations where comparing someone's views to Hitler is becoming increasingly justified. I can't believe where this thread is going. I can see this thread getting locked before too long. And Robert, I won't even say what Sworddude said, but we will start and end with you. Seriously, everyone drop the damn thing. Everyone's dark side here is pretty prevalent, and just about every one of you disgust me. I remember now why I hate OT so much. Comes with the territory. Anonymity allows for all speech inhibitions to be carved away. It is expected that people would act out on initial emotions alone when they post something. It is normal to disgust and try to kill something seemingly unnatural--the same feeling of revulsion many of us get from watching a twitchy, antennae-flailing cockroach skitter amongst garbage. It is not a good thing. But we tend to be less thoughtful of what happens to others when we impulsively post on the internet. Many still want her to be dead even after much logical analysis. This still may be faulty, however, and perhaps all of our conclusions are premature. I'm sure that after much thought and information transfer between us all, we could come to some sort of agreement based on our amassed data. That's what fora are here for, I believe. All of this discussion would have a greater point and perhaps yield more sensitive posts if the mother herself was a member here. Then we could actually effect change instead of aimlessly ramble, like I'm doing right now.

Society isn't a machine in which worn cogs are scrapped and replaced. We have not become mechanical yet. I think this is good. We should revel in our humanity for as long as it lasts. And that includes enjoyment of life beyond working for the greater hive. Though giving up one's life for the many is admirable and what I believe should be done-- I like the idea that we have the choice to do so.

How dense can muscle get? What I have learned from weight training class is that using the amount of weights that allow you to do 3-5 reps builds strength, 8-12 reps, builds size, and anything onwards builds endurance. These are loose ranges, but it implies that a less dense version of muscle that is less functional than normal (if you can build size independent from strength) exists.
