How to drink more water and less bad "Crap"
Lol, 1 - 2 pounds per week is good and healthy. I didn't say that it was unhealthy: that's an excellent rate at which to lose weight. But look at the disparity in the numbers. There is no disparity in the numbers. He started eating 500 fewer calories. Nothing else about his life changed, so that means his body had to get the energy from somewhere. AKA his fat stores. So his body was using 500 cals of his body fat instead of using food. A pound of body fat can be turned into about 3500 calories of energy. Your use of percentages doesn't make any sense. My dad cut his intake by 20%. He lost 1% per week. But if my dad weighed 1 pound he wouldve lost 20% of his body weight each day =P Really though...percent just doesnt make any sense. Daily intake percent has nothing to do with weight loss percent...

Your phone: is it your property?
Only if the government forces me to use it at gunpoint. I'm sure you're aware that there are people who don't even use *20th* century technology, much less 21st. Everyone has choices. Yes, and I have the choice to stop breathing right now. I also have the choice to go run outside naked. I don't know how to properly phrase what I am talking about. Obviously, "forced" and "pressured" are not really an accurate way to describe the feeling I am talking about. It makes it sound like I am saying that a person literally physically cannot abstain from his cell phone. Also, I am comfortable with cell phone use on an individual level. I DO feel that I make responsible use of all my technology, and I am not living my life unhappily. The concern I express is concern for the public, not my own well being. I was raised in a household with very strong asian and native american heritage, so perhaps my point of view is skewed by the fact that I care about the people in my surroundings as much as I care about myself. I was taught to see the people in my community as an extension of my own well being. A lot of western philosophy tends to be centered more around individualism, which might be why you guys have a hard time understanding my point of view.

Your phone: is it your property?
And so where do YOU draw the line with technology becoming one with the human being? Because all I am saying is that the way we are beginning to use cells is pushing my envelope of comfortability with the ethics of technology use. I'm not saying they have to go, or that we could plausibly even take away everyones cells. But at some time in your life, an invention will come along that pushes your limit of comfort with ethics and technology. Or maybe not. Maybe you support humans replacing their bodies with machinery someday. But I don't, and I also don't really feel comfortable with the idea of people carrying these cell phones around like it is their life support machine. Thats what this thread is about, my limit.

Coconut Juice
http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3115/2 It's pretty great. Fresh coconut water is a great thing to have instead of a Gatorade or sports drink with your workout. If you don't work out there isn't a lot of reason to eat the coconut juice except for enjoyment. It can be used in some "raw diet" recipies as a thickener or sweetener and give a slight boost to the nutritional profile.

Don't you think it's kinda lame and arrogant to have Private Chat set to 'Friends'?
What I was talking about was the comparison between RS and real life. I was saying that if you didn't want to be part of society, then your house is where you can go be alone. But if you want to do things in public, you have the responsibility of acknowledging the existence of others. I think that setting private to friends all the time is like ignoring people on the streets IRL. Its the virtual equivilant of someone approaching you and asking for directions, and then you just ignore what theyre saying and keep on walking. Except that there is another option on RS- public chat. Setting that to friends/off would be like ignoring people on the streets. Private chat really is more like a phone, in that it is (generally speaking; not always with phones but in most cases) a 1-on-1 conversation with nobody really listening in, unless they want to hear only one side of it. This. Not this. Public chat: "Can anyone tell me how to get to Lumbridge from here?" This is like me going into the streets and saying: "Where in the world is the closest toilet?" Private chat: "Hey, do YOU know how to get to Lumbridge?" This is like me, approaching someone to talk directly to them and say: "Dude, sorry, but do you know where I can find a toilet..." I think the first question would just result in everyone on the street looking at you like you are crazy or annoying. I think the second question is much more personal, and you get the feeling that the person has looked you over and decided that you would be a helpful person to ask. I find it annoying when people stand in a crowded area and just spam questions that they want answered in public chat. Or...even worse...the people who sit in a Clan Chat and are silent, except for when they just ask to the entire clan chat: "Where can I find a shovel?" Then the discussion in the CC is interrupted by 6 people that simultaneously reply. I like that feeling. In Runescape, it is my high level or nice items which tells people I would have knowledge they might desire. In real life, it is my clean clothes and friendly smile. The stranger approaches you, uses you for your information. And do you get anything in return? Not usually. Except for gratitude. I love gratitude.

Your phone: is it your property?
And you miss the point again. I am not questioning the need of the technology. I am questioning the ethics of the technology. I know what an invention is. I know what a tool is. I know why tools are invented and used. I am questioning the ethics behind creating a device that is, more or less, designed around the principle that you will always be carrying it. What is something that people like about cells? The fact that you can reach people at unplanned times. But, in order to reach them at an unplanned time, that person must be carrying his or her cell at all/most times. If the person obtains a cell so that he can be contacted at random times, but only carries his cell in short periods of time every now and then, then he isn't getting the use out of the device. There would be a high probability that the times he chooses to leave his phone at home will be the very times that people need to contact him. So what does a person do? Well, in order to achieve the goals of the device, he must maximize his carrying time of the device. What I am questioning is not if it is useful to be able to contact anyone anywhere in the world. If it wasnt USEFUL then it would not have been invented. What I am questioning is how comfortable you feel with the idea of technology that, by design, begs the user to have it by their side for most of the day. How united should humans be with technology? For instance, if we could replace our organs with flawless machines, would you see any ethical dilemma in this? Hopefully you understand the idea of this thread. You say that I am missing YOUR points, but that is because the things you are talking about are irrelevant to what I intended to talk about. You are right. It makes stuff easy, and easy stuff sure is fun. But to me, it seems wrong for people to constantly carry around a machine just to fit in with what most people are doing. Do you think there is any morality in the issue? And as an added kicker, I googled and found this: http://www.menshealth.com/men/health/other-diseases-ailments/cellphone-risks-and-radiation/article/2217d519584e7210vgnvcm10000030281eac I'm not saying that cell phones are dangerous, but one thing is for certain. We aren't yet sure if they are dangerous or not. That uncertainty is more than enough to make me weary about my little radiation buddy. It took 40 years for brain tumors to occur after Hiroshima. How can we fully understand the side effects of cell phones when they haven't even been around for that long? Cigarettes were also called "safe" for much longer than 30 years after their invention. And I'd also like to ask you why you feel the need to get so animated about this...I guess my inital post had some strong language in it, but that was my attempt at creative writing. In my responses to you, I have intended to be respectful. Yet, some of the things I get from you seem to be personal attacks. If I offended you in my replies to you, I apologize for that and it was not my intent, and I hope you can reply to me without getting so worked up. ============= @SirHartlar And did you even read Saru's post? I asked him what he would think of a friend who stopped using his cell: Hartlar, I didn't make this thread because I thought I was the only person in the world who uses their cell phone responsibly. I made this thread as a discussion of the growing population of cell users who are addicted and depend on their phone. When I say things like "people expect you to..." I dont mean that every single person in every country shows this behavior. I mean "most people expect you to" or "many people expect you to" or "a growing number of people expect you to." Also, I see you live in England. I live in the USA. We Americans tend to go overboard with this type of stuff with obesity, laziness, etc. So I wouldn't doubt that the mobile culture over here is a little different than your mobile culture.

Is a curlbar enough to build muscle?
For a 14 year old, what you are doing is plenty for your biceps. Add in some push-ups, sit ups, jumping jacks if you want to get in even better shape. You could also do body weight squats. All this combined sounds pretty good for a 14 year old. At your age, don't look for a weight-training program. If you want to do exercise, just do something to engage your muscles and focus more on athletic ability. Definitely do not lift heavy weights yet. (as someone already said) If it gets too easy to do your bicep curls eventually, you could probably look into doing chin-ups. But remember that young people are not meant to do a hardcore training routine yet. Once you finish puberty you can start worrying about that kind of stuff. Just do enough exercise to make yourself break a little sweat. As far as eating is concerned...vegetables! Lots and lots and lots of vegetables. Broccoli, culiflower, spinach, cucumbers, sweet potatos, carrots, green beans, tomatoes (actually are a fruit), and peppers are all great. Fruits are good too: canteloupe, honey dew, bananas, apples, oranges, blueberries, raspberries, and grapes are my favorites. You also want to make sure that you are eating some protein. Milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, chicken, beef, turkey, ham, bacon, pork are all good choices for most of your needs. Almonds, walnuts, and fish should also be part of your food intake from time to time, if we are talking an ideal diet. Unless you have PROBLEMS, though, you shouldn't worry too much (like unless you are obese). If you are an average, growing boy, just eat more vegetables and eat less things like candy, cake, and ice cream.

How to drink more water and less bad "Crap"
Lmao...a calorie is a unit of energy, nothing more. ONE calorie is DEFINED as the ammount of energy used to increase a gram of water by 1 degree. This just means that it is the unit of measure. For instance...ONE METRE is DEFINED as the distance that light travels in 1/300 millionth of a second. But I can say that a building is 20 metres tall and I am not talking about anything dealing with the travel of light... The only reason we also use calories for energy measurement in food is because the number scale works pretty well.

Could YOU eat and drink NOTHING for 30 years?
I was just saying...Someone asked how it would be POSSIBLE without food. They basically asked how he could have the energy. All I was saying was that there is more than enough energy available in his mass. I said that it would still be "impossible" based on our knowledge of the human body. BUT the energy would be there. If his body had a supernatural or never before seen method of converting his fat to super efficient energy, he could survive. That is all I mean. It isn't IMPOSSIBLE. There are few things that we can say for sure are actually not possible.

*Diet* questions
If you wanna talk cheap, healthy eating...it doesn't get much better than fruits and vegetables. Bananas are 69 cents per pound. Apples are usually around a dollar per pound. Other high value produce includes potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, carrots, cucumbers, and celery. I'm sure theres also plenty of stuff I forgot to include too. If you want to start bringing these things to work, one thing you are going to need is plenty of good tupperware containers. These will help you take fast and easy meals on the go. For example, my Sunday nights are usually spent peeling, cutting, cooking, and packing my meals for the next 5 days. I am busy during the week, and I know that if I don't have my healthy foods ready to go, I might have no time to cook and end up buying a fast food meal.. So I cube up 1 or 2 canteloupes, 10 stalks of celery, slice up about 5 apples (toss them in some lemon juice so they dont brown), etc. You can also do things like hard boil eggs in advance. I also like to make some type of chicken or tuna salad and keep that in a tupperware container. Then, I will take the tuna salad and either eat it plain, eat it with some celery, or put it on a sandwich. I even make entrees in advance, like grilled chicken breast. I love sweet potatoes. On sunday I bake 5 sweet potatos in the oven, and then wrap them in plastic wrap and keep them in the fridge for the week. So if you wanted to have a healthy lunch ready for work, you could prepare these things on Sunday and then they would be ready to grab out of the fridge on any morning. You could wake up, and grab your grilled chicken out of the fridge, and grab a vegetable to go with it. Then just put it in the fridge at work and you are good to go.

Your phone: is it your property?
What you said is what I am talking about. People want it to be as easy as possible to contact you. So if you want to be contacted, your friends choose the method, not you basically. So if I dont have a cell, a friend will think of me and say "Why is he making it harder for me to call him?" Basically, your personal choice of abstaining from cell use affects other people, because they think the only way to contact people is now the fastest way possible. As Saru said earlier, if his friend threw away his cell phone, he would assume that his friend didn't want to be contacted. Do you understand? People have this attitude that now, we should really only be expected to use the fastest, easiest modes of communication. If I don't have a phone, people think that is a comment on whether or not I want to be contacted. Maybe I still want to be contacted, but I just dont feel like carrying my "tamogotchi" as dusqi compared it to. If I dont use the elevator, people dont say "oh...well he doesnt want to go upstairs!" But if I dont have a cell, people think it is a comment on the degree to which I want to be contacted. We understand that elevators are not the only way to go upstairs, but many people are losing sight of the fact that cells, facebook, and email are not the only ways to keep in touch.

*Diet* questions
Wow that sucks..But honestly if you are on a budget, pre-cooked frozen meals seem like a really expensive thing to do. Especially lean cuisine. You could save a lot of money by making your own meals in advance and then microwaving them at lunch. Plus you could avoid some perservatives which surely will not help your sensitive system. Could you clarify something for me though? You say you have allergies to tomato, and dairy. But you say you like Lean Cuisine Chiken Parmesean. Is there some foods you need to avoid more than others? Chicken parm has tomato and cheese.

Your phone: is it your property?
If you want to churn your butter instead of buy it from a store, nobody cares. If you take stairs instead of the elevator, people sometimes admire you for being active. If you bike instead of use a car, people understand that you might either be active or are trying to be green. If you don't have a cell phone or a phone at all, people think you are a social misfit. All my friends use cell phones, but if I refused to even own one, do you think that they would be willing to send me letters or walk to my house if they wanted to talk to me? I'm frustrated by the fact that our teleophone technology is less of a luxury and more of an expectation. Hell, a lot of jobs WILL basically require you to have a cell phone. Plus, the philosophical "use" of it demands its use. I don't really know how to say this in a non confusing way...But the purpose of cell phones is basically "In case I am out of the house and people want to talk to me" or "In case I get in a car crash and need to call for asisstance." Basically, you only carry the thing with you because you are afraid of your unknown future. I don't know if I explained that correctly. And I will never have a chip implanted in me for recreational purposes. For medical purposes...maybe? I'm not sure. But thats kind of what I am asking in the thread. I feel like our phones have become our constant companion, and many people WOULD have them implanted in their head if they could. What I am saying is that I feel we are getting a bit too close to this type "reliance" on technology, and I was wondering what other people thought about it. Would YOU get a phone implant?
-
Don't you think it's kinda lame and arrogant to have Private Chat set to 'Friends'?
I didn't really consider your status in the community. I thought that you were speaking in generalities to apply to anyone. I mean, if I were you, I would play with private on friends. If I were Zezima I'd play with private on friends. I think we were just talking about two seperate situations. I was talking about the average player like myself, while your opinions seem to be more from the point of view of an RS "celeb" I thought we were having a hypothetical conversation, my bad.

*Diet* questions
I'm sorry to tell you this, but I will tell you what your doctors probably didn't. I'm betting your condition came from eating processed foods. The food industry injects our "food" with various preservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors....plenty of other chemicals. This stuff is killing us. Go back to your organic diet. It might seem expensive, but obviously your body responds great to it. Or, you could pick the "cheap" food, which will continue to detriment your health. In the long run, you're gonna end up paying even more due to medical problems in the future. Organic food is cheap, considering that it is saving your life. Think of it this way. Anything that isn't organic is just a product. It is a product being sold by a company that wants to make as much money as possible. They give you the cheapest stuff possible and then jack up the price as much as possible. Organic food is food, not a product. They give you good, wholesome, nutritious food that will help your body become healthier. Preservatives were invented to save money for companies, not to feed your body. Don't eat chemicals. Eat food.

Your phone: is it your property?
I HAVE churned butter from milk. I have made my own yogurt and cottage cheese. I have killed a deer, and cleaned it down to the bones with my knife and my bare hands. I am 25% native american, and I have been to my tribe's ground to experience the way that my ancestors lived. I have gone camping with nothing but a good friend, a pair of boots, the clothes on my back, and a utility knife. Does every need to go DO this? No. But I do it to gain a complete appreciation of what it means to exist in the world. Even if you don't want to go experience these things, I still think it is important to at least THINK about it, and be aware of the fact that life today is no more of an absolute good than life was 100s of years ago. With every new invention comes new expectations. We are always looking for the newer more powerful phone. We invent the car, then we want to fly. We invent the plane, then we want to go into space. People just get greedy with all this fancy technology. You think your phone is so cool and important, but the people 200 years from now are gonna look at you and laugh. Ask a 10 year old where his hamburger meat comes from. I bet he will tell you "The store!" or "A factory". Lots of technology and commercialization dilutes reality if you aren't careful enough to think about it. And really. Honestly, phones could be a cause of cancer. We aren't sure yet that they are safe to use. Anybody want to comment on this? I guess brain tumors are a small price to pay for faster acess to your Facebook.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Thats cool, most people have a closed mind about that sort of stuff. Be careful though because the drink is very different from the one you have  If you like that 7-up drink, you might very much like a Tom Collins (if you like gin at all)

Your phone: is it your property?
You guys are still missing the question of the thread. I ask you what is good about ALWAYS HAVING to use something. I am not asking you the benefits of the cell phone. I know why the device was invented and I know what it is used for. But my point is that the technology has infiltrated our lives so much that it makes people lazy, impatient, and lose sight of what life would even be like without this invention. They lose sight of the fact that it is just some object in your world, not a part of human existence. That is my viewpoint on why it can be a bad idea to RELY on TECHNOLOGY in general (not just cell phones). What I am asking is whether or not you have a problem with the role that devices play in our lives now. Our jobs expect us to use them, our friends expect us to use them. Eventually there will be a high tech device for everything. Eventually, I bet we will be able to have our entire body replaced by mechanical implants. Would YOU do that? That is what I am asking. I picked out the cell phone because it is the first piece of technology that we carry by our sides virtually all the time. The only difference between having a cell phone implanted in your head and the way that most people use their cell phones is that the cell is just physically outside their body. It is still with them just as much as some type of crazy robotic implant is. I'm not asking you if you like the benefits that the invention of the cellphone gives to the human race. I am asking if you like the idea of humans starting to have these types of devices with them 24/7 or not. Billions of people lives happy lives before the invention. We only think that this type of communication is "better" because the invention came along and someone sold it to us. It's pretty rediculous how many people in this thread are living as slaves to media and commercialization, without even questioning the origins of objects, or examining if these objects are inherently good or only seem "good" because commercials tell us to need them. I suppose the posts in this thread are just a prime example of the problem I am talking about, and how much of a brainwash these companies really have on you guys. Thousands of years ago, people managed to live their lives with a hut made out of sticks. Do you really think that you have an objectively "better" life than they did? Do you think they didnt enjoy their life? You ever worked manual labor? Did anything the hard way? I'm strongly doubting no by your posting so far. Ever milked a cow? Planted a garden? These things can be done by machine, they can be done manually. A cell phone is a convenience. Lol this is ridiculous. I am the one questioning the need for technology, and you make an immature unreasonable assumption like this. What is your reasoning behind this? I seriously don't even understand. A guy says that we DONT need this crazy technology, but you seem to think that guy doesn't enjoy doing things with a hands on approach. I have done plenty of manual labor, thank you very much. And it is probably the reason that I hold the views that I do. A hard life breeds character. A life of laziness builds obesity and spoiled brats.

How to drink more water and less bad "Crap"
http://www.nutritiondata.com/help/estimated-glycemic-load I think I was interchanging the use of the term "glycemic index" when I should have been saying what I know as the "glycemic load"? And if you have extreme highs and lows in your blood sugar does that not wreck your metabolism? Compared to a fairly steady blood sugar.

Your phone: is it your property?
Because if I have any sense of a belief, my entire life therefore has to be a complete devotion to that belief. Right? Because it is becoming such a substitution for real, human interaction. Also, it is a crutch to many people. People in modern societies DEPEND on their phone. Do you really enjoy having more and more technology that you DEPEND on? I like to live my life not being ruled by my machines. My machines work for me, I don't keep it with me like a baby I am caring for. Also, the full effects of the long term radiation exposure have still not been studied well enough. What exactly is GOOD about always having something with you? I'm not asking what is good about a cell phone, I am asking why it is desireable to carry another object with you everywhere you go, every day of your life. In another 100 years, I imagine humans wearing a utility belt crammed full of various high tech devices that are only "necessary" because they were invented. Billions of people lived before you without a cell phone, but now that it has been invented, people think it is better to have one than to not have one, and everyone needs one. Now you are stupid if you COULD have a cell phone, but choose not to. I guess George Washington just lived a terrible life then... Also Nadril, would you get your cell implanted into your head if you could?
-
Your phone: is it your property?
What about the fact that you are going to be carrying this "necessity" with you everywhere you go? You can go somewhere and not bring your toilet, and nothing will happen. But if you just neglect your phone for a week, someone is probably gonna think you died. The only other thing I can think of that is similar on your list there is clothing. Do we really want machines to become the same category as clothing? I wasn't talking about the price in money...I was talking about the "price" in the fact that you have to carry this object with you everywhere you go. Kind of like the price that a dog pays for safety. Sure, we might keep him safe from bears, but he has to sit there tied up in the yard, or fenced in. I mean, even if you buy a mobile just for emergencies in your car, you still HAVE to have it with you everywhere you drive. You dont know when an emergency will happen so it has to be in your car. Same for contact purposes. If you own a cell because you want to be available in a family emergency, you have to have it with you everywhere.

How to drink more water and less bad "Crap"
Because calories directly correspond to pounds. Not a percent. When we are talking a pound of fat on your body, about 3500 calories are stored there. So if a person takes in 2500 calories a day, and is maintaining weight, he can cut his diet to 2000 calories per day of the same foods. This will then create a caloric deficit of about 500 calories, meaning that your body will draw the energy from its fat stores. So that adds up to 3500 caloric deficit per week, or a pound of fat, roughly, per week. Percent has nothing to do with it. If you want to argue that a high carb 2500 cal diet is different than a 2500 cal high protein high fiber diet, then I agree with you. Types of food matter, yes. Carbs (high glycemic carbs) are evil, yes. But this is different from calories. Calories do matter. GI has nothing to do with energy-retention. A calorie is a calorie, converts into fat if you don't expend as much energy. I think the world would know, because you simply count calories when feeding the under-nourished (not mal-nourished). The GI content of food is really too complicated to narrow down to this post, but the basic idea is that high GI foods will be digested extremely quickly. So if you are going to eat a high GI meal, followed by no food for 5 hours, this will cause a huge spike in your blood sugar for about 30 minutes and then the meal will be digested and unusable soon after. Low GI carbs can be used for longer, meaning that your body has a better chance of using all of the energy immediately. When you create large spikes and lows in blood glucose, your brain gets confusing messages and will often turn itself into "survival mode" and might take the previous meal and try to store it, or it might slow down its necessary processes to try to conserve energy. I mean but I agree with your side dude...a calorie is basically a calorie, and 3500 excess calories will always be turned into the same ammount of body mass. Theres a slight difference though, because with low GI carbs you will burn more natural calories than when you eat a diet of high glycemic carbs. Eating low fiber high sugar carbs wrecks your metabolism. But if we say that someone is burning 2000 calories a day no matter what, and he eats 2000 calories a day, it doesnt matter what he eats he will not gain or lose weight. But in reality, eating the wrong types of foods can slow your metabolism.

Your phone: is it your property?
These features are great, but I'm more concerned with the price you pay to have them: constantly having to keep tabs on the location of your little plastic box. Do you have anything to say about that part of the discussion? Your post talked about the benefits of cell phones. I know the benefits of cell phones. But you didn't say anything about the price that you pay. This is pretty rude, but unfortunately you are correct at the time. My job ended with the spring semester. But, I am in grad school for education, and I start 30 hr/wk internship in the fall. But what you mentioned IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. One of the reasons you have a phone is because your job expects you to carry a phone. My discussion is trying to bring to light any comment you have on the ridiculousness that many parts of our society now demand for us to be available via phone and carry our little friend with us everywhere we go. In my mind, its a few steps away from having government issued PDA's (like many science fiction movies/books suggest)

Don't you think it's kinda lame and arrogant to have Private Chat set to 'Friends'?
I'm not distressed at all, actually. I have been and will continue to do what I want. Your opinions on it are more amusing than distressing. I like being PMed by friends. It's random people I sometimes don't want to be PMed by. People like, well, you. Just answer me one last question. How do you make new friends if you only chat with people you are already friends with? Okay one other question. Why don't you want people PMing you? What, specifically, is so bothersome about their PM that forces you to block out everyone except your friends? Too difficult to look away from the text? Too time consuming to type out an answer to a question?
