  1. Then care to give us a reason how it is possible? As a physicist, I'll give you a reason. Suppose his body can convert itself into pure energy, without making any type of waste. Using Einstein's relation of E=mc2 we can calculate that one kilogram of mass has 75 MILLION calories worth of energy inside of it. If your body needs 2500 calories to survive, he could have enough energy in one kilo of body fat to last him for 30,000 days. I'm not saying I necessarily think this is real...but if you wanted a reason for how this type of thing would be POSSIBLE, there you go. If you want an explanation of how it is possible to convert fat to PURE ENERGY without any type of waste...well, I cant explain that. But the energy is definitely there. Hell he has enough energy to power himself for 20-30 lifetimes if he can convert his mass directly to energy.
  2. I'm blaming society. I want to know if you think it is right or wrong the ammount of dependance that we have on our cell phones. They are basically security blankets.. I understand they are useful, but my problem is that people don't even think of them as useful pieces of equipment anymore, but rather a staple of society. They fail to see how unnecessary they actually are. If you don't own a TV, people think "Oh, I guess he just doesnt like TV" If you don't own a car, people think "Oh I guess hes concerned for the environment, or maybe just doesn't need one" If you take the stairs instead of the elevator, people think you are being healthy. If you don't have a phone, people think you are a shut-in loser.
  3. Sigh. Qeltar I do love you, I really do, but please just listen to me. My intent of this thread is to discuss cell phone technology and whether or not people should be inventing these items that become expected for people to carry around all the time. I don't want to make this the definition of habit or stance or societal norms, or whether I should break the norms. I wanted to discuss the place of technology in the life of man. You're just hell bent on making yourself win a battle, but I really dont even want a battle to exist here. So either you can keep talking about whatever it is you are trying to get at, or you can talk about what I tried to make this thread about. I am sorry if you feel like I included you in the people that I "disapprove" of, but it sounds like you have a good idea of what an object is, and what it means to own an object. The point of the thread is that the growing trend is that people do not use technology at their leisure, but rather they depend on their technology as though it is one of their limbs. Particularly mobile phones. I understand that I CAN break the norm, but the discussion is out of concern for society, not my personal well being. Whether or not this norm is a problem. I am not concerned for my well-being because I have been blessed with enough common sense to evaluate what parts of my life are good for me or bad for me. But many people cannot make this evaluation, or do not even bother to think about technology. Which is how we end up with cancer from over-processed foods, and brain tumors from cell phones.
  4. Then I guess you live alone in the country and I live around tons of people in the city. My friends and family depend on the fact that I will answer their phone calls, or else they get worried or upset. They know I own a cell phone and they expect that I will be available on it at a moment's notice, to at least return their call within a day. If I tell someone I'm not watching TV this week, nobody would care. If I tell someone I am turning my cell phone off for a week, they think I'm a freak.
  5. 3.5m every 3.5 days looks pretty good to me. But you aren't actually making money until you sell it. If you buy a shield you will continually make money with it even if you never sell it.
  6. Then look in the mirror, bub, because that's what you are doing. Except that you have no reasonable basis for deciding how I communicate, whereas, I do. I'm not doing anything. I'm talking about how much I dislike what you do, and you are getting distressed about it. Let me know when I come to your house and click your PM button onto Public. If you don't want to be PM'ed, turn private Off. If you want to be PM'ed turn it On. This argument doesn't extend to the Friends option. So you admit that text on a monitor upsets you so much that you just need to block it.
  7. Thats what the thread is about. Thats what I'm asking. Do you feel comfortable with the idea that cell phones are growing to the point of where you are EXPECTED to carry them? I dont support this side of the fence, and would like to hear people's opinions on why they think man can become one with technology. Or do you feel upset or uncomfortable with the idea that we are starting to rely on our cell phone? I don't think it is a good idea. I think that people getting used to the sense of "immediate gratification" is warping our society. Its why McDonalds is even in business and continuing to feed poison to the masses. I do feel upset by this. I am expected to check my e-mail daily. My only comfort is that people still understand that my computer stays at home, and they only expect me to be available by email when I am at home. That may be changing though...if the "standard" phone starts to become like a Blackberry then I might be screwed.
  8. The system I am favoring would be worlds that you can just log into if you have a members account. I don't know what the specific details would be (how much of the world is acessible? is it JUST the update content?) but I would want them to be acessible to the general population (of members). For people who didn't want to play the test world, there would also be a list (like "patch notes") that clearly explains all the game features that are currently being tested. That way you could be updated on future content without having to play the world yourself or relying on word of mouth. I'm just saying that I could see this system catching MORE bad things (all bad things? no.) before they might be implemented live and hurt the game. ^ basically that is the only argument I have FOR the test world system. The reason I support it though, is that I just CANT think of why it might be a bad thing. So I have one "good thing" about it and no "bad things" so therefore I support the idea.
  9. Then good for you! I wasn't trying to say "every single person who reads this is an evil bastard and misuses his phone" Your phone doesn't own you. You have asessed when it is necessary to have it, when you actually WANT to have it, and when it would be convenient to use. What I was more talking about was the type of people who stay absorbed in their phones all the time. Checking email, checking texts...facebook...twitter...calling, all that stuff...like ALL day. I mean, I live in the middle of Pittsburgh so maybe I just see more technologically "tuned in" people than you guys do. But I can safely say that most of the people I see on a daily basis are so plugged into their phone that they couldn't imagine going a month without it. You sound like you could live without your phone. So this thread is not yelling at you  What I am truly concerned about is the children today who are being given their phones at age 8 or even younger. These kids will have it even more ingrained in their heads that a cell phone is just a part of life.
  10. Because calories directly correspond to pounds. Not a percent. When we are talking a pound of fat on your body, about 3500 calories are stored there. So if a person takes in 2500 calories a day, and is maintaining weight, he can cut his diet to 2000 calories per day of the same foods. This will then create a caloric deficit of about 500 calories, meaning that your body will draw the energy from its fat stores. So that adds up to 3500 caloric deficit per week, or a pound of fat, roughly, per week. Percent has nothing to do with it. If you want to argue that a high carb 2500 cal diet is different than a 2500 cal high protein high fiber diet, then I agree with you. Types of food matter, yes. Carbs (high glycemic carbs) are evil, yes. But this is different from calories. Calories do matter.
  11. Thats what I'm sayin' I'm saying that most people have fed into this product like it is a necessity. Saying "I didnt feel like having my cell phone" is not even comprehensible to many (most?) people. Like I said, I have one. I'm not saying anything is wrong with the invention, but with society's use (misuse?) of it. I mean look at some of the responses here. Saru said that if his friend didn't have a cell phone, he would assume that he either didn't want to be contacted or his friend was a weirdo. That's the problem I'm talking about. It is now "weird" if we don't have our box of radiation-emitting wires on us at all times. I go camping and leave my phone at home. Could I get reception in the forest? Yes. Do I NOT WANT to be talked to? Not necessarily. Its not that I want to turn down social interaction, its just that I want to cut my tether to my material possessions.
  12. I'll stop you right here, because it isnt the spirit of the thread. The discussion is about use of technology, not people bothering me. If people all had mental telepathy naturally, then I would not want to shut my mental telepathy to be turned off. The point is summed up by the quote I posted, invention being the mother of necessity. We only need cells because they were invented, and we only carry them everywhere because people want us to. It has nothing to do with me wanting/not wanting to talk to people. What would you lose out of your life? I'm talking an identical robotic copy of your human body. Full functionality, but synthetically produced. Also, some scientists are saying that cells may cause brain tumors in the 40-50 year mark of usage. I don't really want to get into that though...But other people (myself included) just don't enjoy unnatural things being a part of myself. I like to be fully aware of nature and also in tune with my body. I think that technology creates superficiality. It just isn't what I enjoy, and I was curious how other people feel about technology defining them (or if anyone had stopped to even consider it). And yes, I knew this would be a crazy shot in the dark, on a board about a nerdy computer game.
  13. Again, what I would like to discuss in this thread is why you do or don't feel comfortable with such technology becoming a part of what you have on you at all times. You say that, if cars could be carried around in the size of a mobile phone, people would take their cars everywhere too. BUT, my question is whether this is good or bad, to become one with your technology. I mean if you could get your head chopped off and put inside a fully-functional robotic human body, would you?
  14. There is a strong parallel here, but I use my car for what I need to. Anywhere closer than 10 miles and I usually bike it. Anywhere closer than 3 miles is usually walked. Also, we are not EXPECTED to take our car everywhere. We don't go to dinner at a restaurant and sit in our car. If we don't take our car on vacation, it is not "strange." If you tell people that you dont use a cell phone, or don't usually have it on you, they will look at you like you forgot to put pants on that morning. Mobiles are no longer a device that we use when necessary, but rather a part of our humanity. Saru, you are still avoiding the point of the discussion. Why is it okay for people to be expected to carry around a radiation-emmitting device 24/7? WHY is he weird if your friend wants to feel like a human, and not a robot? He is a weirdo because he doesn't want to depend on a small hunk of plastic to define his personality? Honestly, most of us have our mobiles implanted in us. Well, not literally. They may not actually be INSIDE of you, but what is the difference, really? Both a cell phone and an implant would be with you all day every day.
  15. And I support turning chat OFF when you dont want to use it. This topic is about dependancy on an object of technology. The other topic is about un-necessarily limiting your interaction with strangers in an online gaming community. The two threads are different. I'm sorry that you feel the need to draw illogical parallels just to validate your view.
  16. Read the bolded part. Several times if necessary. Free clue: a lot of introverts play games like RuneScape for a reason. Sure. Your social preference really explains why you are so afraid of confrontation that you have to block messages on a computer screen. You are blocking tiresome morons from PMing you, but you are also blocking nice friendly people from PMing you. I'd rather just skip reading lines from "morons" or put them on my ignore list. Your choice of interaction on "your own time" is rude, and selfish. Interaction with people one-on-one is a two way street. If you want to interact with people on YOUR time, it is rude to not accept the interaction of others on THEIR time. Putting your desires over the desires of others is selfish.
  17. Privacy is what your house is for. Also if you really wanted PRIVACY you would have private chat OFF. LIMITING your interaction to just being between yourself and the people you are comfortable with is cutting out strangers. Google "fear of strangers" and see what word comes up.
  18. Why is it acceptable that you have to carry a posession of yours with you at all times? How would you feel about a friend if he stopped using his cell?
  19. Theres a complete difference on what we are talking about here. The topic on PMing is talking about privacy concerns, and people "bothering you" This post is about man inventing an object that does not serve him, but dominates him. Saru, the point of the topic is whether or not we should be comfortable with the fact that it is an expectation that all people carry around some stupid little electronic device all the time. Your phone is not an object that you have for luxury, but is now a societal expectation. How long will it be before we have more technology that develops the same context? When they draw pictures of the human body in anatomy textbooks, they are going to need to start drawing a little blue-tooth headset on the guy.
  20. Which is why I put my mobile in my car and usually keep it there. I don't really mean to say if cell phones are definitely "good" or "bad", but there is no doubt that they are no longer an invention of luxury but rather a necessity to be part of today's culture. But I encourage you to reconsider the definition of "important" or "urgent" and also evaluate the context of our emotional response. If an "urgent" piece of information needs to be conveyed today, people take "urgent" to mean NOW. They NEED to get ahold of you NOW and it causes a panic if they don't hear from you in a day. Before, something different was just expected. If you were trying to get ahold of someone, and even went to their house and saw they weren't there, you wouldn't go into a panic and say "Ahhh!! Why isn't there a way for this to happen INSTANTLY?!" You just knew that people weren't going to be available 24/7, and they knew it too. I don't think that handling an "urgent" issue is a necessity, and I don't think instant grantifaction is any "better" than interaction with people on an uncertain timeframe. Especially if the former means that every human needs to carry a radiation-emitting device with them 24/7.
  21. So basically you're a xenophobe. People should probably deal with this problem by seeing a psychiatrist, not the chat option on runescape. You should probably look up what "xenophobe" actually means before you start accusing people of being one, much less recommending psychiatrists. Wanting to be left alone is not a mental disorder. The fact that you're telling people to "go to hell" simply for having a different viewpoint on this issue suggests it is not nurserymaid who needs professional help. Xenophobia- fear of strangers Wanting to be left alone IS a mental disorder. Things like depression, anxiety, phobias, all cause this. I think it is incredibly arrogant and rude to ignore your fellow man, and you aren't contributing anything to a peaceful society by not even giving people a chance. There is no reason to put your private chat on "Friends" except for your own concerns. Selfish.
  22. I'm not sure how this works in the actual game, and whether it only applies to the inital "engagement" or any time during the fight, but it may be more efficent in rooms requiring the usage of a protection prayer to have one person attract all the powerful monsters. Their attack would then be blocked on that one person's protection prayer, rather than the the entire groups. Or maybe if one particular person had a huge defense bonus, he could simply tank all the monsters instead. Ah wow. Cool.
  23. "Invention is the mother of necessity." -Thorstein Veblen, philosopher This quote, a play on the original "Necessity is the mother of invention" shines a light on many of our modern devices. Your cellphone: where is it right now? On your desk? In your pocket? Strapped to your belt like a firearm? Glued to your head for convenience? Take a step back, and imagine what life would be like without your mobile phone. How would people know where you were at every second of the day? How could you possibly Tweet more than 10 times a day if you didn't have the option to do it while you were walking down the street? I hate phones. Absolutely hate them. This technology is destroying life as we know it. Imagine a day when you leave your phone at home... Your mother: "Where were you the other day?! I called your cell about 100 times!" Your friends: "Man we were trying to invite you to go bowling at the last possible second, but you didnt answer your cell!" Your girlfriend(s): "Why didn't you tell me what you thought of that picture-message I sent you of that cute dress??" Having a cell phone in today's world is no longer a luxury; it is an expectation. If you have no answer to "What's your cell phone number?" people will look at you like a freak. If you don't carry your little companion cube with you everywhere you go, PEOPLE FREAK OUT. For some reason, in the past 20-30 years people have developed the need to instantly communicate with someone anywhere on the globe at any time. Nevermind the fact that we existed for thousands of years without the power of stalking someones life. If you really wanted to see someone, you went to their home. If they weren't home: then you just went somewhere else and realised that there are thousands of days if your life, and you do not really need to see this person right now. The cell phone industry has done nothing for us but manufacture false needs. Your car breaks down? You NEED your cell! God forbid you might have to WALK SOMEWHERE. You want to see a friend? You NEED to call him first! That surely will change his availability to you...and now you don't need to actually make plans to see people. You can just pester them every day, on the spur of the moment, until they have nothing better to do. So do you guys own your cell? Or does it own you? Just to clarify: The intent of this thread is to discuss whether or not you feel comfortable with the idea that cell phone technology is becoming a mandatory posession (which society expects you to carry at all times).
  24. Do you know if you drink real/old-fashioned whiskey sours? The classic whiskey sour is made with egg, to make it foam and give it a REALLY nice, smooth texture. Do they look like this? Or there is the modern version, which doesnt have the egg but is similar in the other ingredients. It takes away the egg (because bars are too paranoid to serve raw egg usually..) and sometimes it will just be whiskey + sour mix. Or substitute the sour mix for fresh juice and sugar. This usually leaves a very flat drink, which is different from the foamyness of a normal whiskey sour. So is your drink smooth and foamy? Or is it flat? Or...there is a possibility that it might have some carbonation in it. Some bars use lemon-lime soda instead of a sour mix to try to mimic the bubbly egg white. I ask because it would be important to know before I reccomend anything else for you.
  25. An absolute lie. Calories can be counted. If you consume more than you burn, you gain weight. If you burn more than you consume, you lose weight. Read the book, the well-documented studies and the peer-reviewed research. The difference is negligible. It's all about what you put into your body, and you can only "Count Calories" if that's all the information that you want. It's just a rough estimate, nothing else. I dont need to read the book. When I bulk weight I eat the same diet that I eat when I cut weight, but when bulking I eat more and when cutting I eat less. Everyone who has disciplined experience in building their body can tell you this. Also my dad's doctor told him he needed to drop about 40 pounds. His weight was stable, though. I told him to log everything he eats and the ammount. I cut his diet by 500 calories per day and hes been losing a steady 1-2 lbs per week. Hell, the entire Weight Watchers program works off calorie counting...Plenty of sucess when people follow that program. Ever watch The Biggest Loser? They count their calories. It's fact...science. It is the energy you take in compared to the energy you burn. Unless maybe you are talking about someone eating a diet identical in calories but different in composition? Because if person A eats a diet rich in vegetables and lean proteins and person B eats the same calories per day, but eats nothing but cheesecake, person B would probably be more unhealthy and probably fatter... Or are you saying that if someone eats 4000 calories of good food, and person B eats all the same foods but the portions only add up to 1000 calories, person A will not weigh more? I'd have to disagree with that.
