Software mode is bloody terrible anyway. If you are using a machine which can only support software mode, it is not Jagex's problem. This is 2013, therefore, a $250.00 Walmart tower can run RS in OpenGL or DirectX. If you don't have $250.00, McDonald's hires anyone who can make it to work on time a few times a week. You can buy a 30 dollar video card from an online retailer if your motherboard has a PCI/PCIe slot, which can run DirectX or OpenGL at a high resolution and max settings or minimum settings as well. Software mode limits what they can add to their engine anyways. Adding something like ambient occlusion in their software renderer would require hundreds, even thousands of lines of codes as each pixel has to be calculated and manipulated to get accurate readings. In native coding, it can be done in much less and runs much faster as well as reduces work load the CPU has to do for other things in the game. The time spent adding features to something a Blackberry 8800 could run could be better spent on the HTML5 engine or moving towards the future and not the past. Not trying to argue that it's good or anything, but software mode is all that will run on my girlfriend's Macbook Pro, new last year. Even then, it's still terribly laggy. Then again, it is a mac :P
