Four deck! Russian shipbuilders begin plans for a ten deck, 250 gun flagship. -sarcasm-

Napoleonic Hegemony
Also, I begin this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_reform_of_Alexander_I It is a few decades early, but there should be no problems. It was stalled because of the napoleanic wars and conservative nobility, but I don't have either of those problems. :) Basically, beginning transition into a modern society. ----- The countries that Russia trades with the most are protestant (on the Baltic) or Orthodox. Britain, Netherlands, Prussia, other Northern German States, possibly Sweden.

They weren't trained by the nobles. Probaly by the Bourgeosie. As I recall, there was quite a deal of contention between the aristocracy which garnered its wealth through land and the Bourgeosie which garnered its wealth through industry and commerce. Intellectuals and the Bourgeosie are encouraged to come to Russia, where there is no oppression from the nobles and a great enviroment for business. Moscow shall be the beacon of freedom, commerce, industry, and science! Peasant communities are encouraged to come together and begin civil projects in their areas, intensively farming and raising livestock. They are told that since the nobles are gone, they have to work together to build a life for themselves, with the help of the imperial government.

I've lost a third of my budget for ten years. My defences are still quite in order and I have time for my reforms.

Good thing I completely prepared for this. The peasants which I had trained in my schools are now administrators. They are dispatched throughout the lands (with bodyguards) to extend the control of the central government to the outlying provinces. Any loyal nobles, who are nice to the peasants and share my viewpoints, are promoted within the government, taking power in administrative duties for the central government. Schools are set up using the profits that would've been going to the nobles, and the peasants are informed that the harder they work, the more money can be used to build schools and clinics for them. Meanwhile, the Bourgeois are invited to come into Russia. The salespitch is that we have been freed from noble oppression and greatly value those who make their wealth fairly through industry and commerce.

Dwarf fortress
If you look at the center of the first picture in the big dug-out area, with the statues, that is where the stairs lead to. Basically the entrance to my fort. I plan to add ballistas behind a wall, to add a second defence (since the water freezes during winter, I think). Does anyone have a recommendation as to how I should trigger the trap? I have levers right now. --- I do, but it doesn't work. I've been using legions of pump operators. Who needs a machine when you can go Soviet?

Is this a brook or a river? If it's a brook, you'll need to channel on the river, because it has a natural grate at the top.

I have no idea. It should turn anytime there is flow. Then again, my water wheel doesn't work either. You could have someone manually do it, if that's an option.

Personally I would use pressure pads to activate doors, then use a manual lever to release the flood. Seems much safer than having one goblin rush in, activate the flood, and have the others wait it out. ---- Oh, you just need to make more than one field.

A single high level farmer can sustain a mid-sized fortress by him(her)self. Something that could help would be to make sure that farming is the only labor that the farmer has.

Farming is much more reliable. Might be hard to continue the fortress without it (lack of alcohol and all of that)

The axels are the things that transfer power. The turning wheel provides power, which cannot be used for anything else unless you have axels. What are you trying to power?

Interest Check: Picture Dungeoneering
My suggestion for that would be to deliberately make harmful events. "You encounter a herd of rampaging elephants." "You are ambushed by a group of bandits." etc

Here's a picture of my completed and filled cistern. Incase I run out of beers, my dwarves will have fresh, desalinated water. The channels being built will connect directly with the ocean and will then be pumped up to the storage at ground level, to fill a floodtrap. [hide=Picture] [/hide]

If a dwarf goes into a fey mood and makes an item, I think their happiness goes up by a thousand.
