I died in f2p, got 99 hp, picked up my untrimmed strength capes, and bought an hp cape in p2p. The strength capes got trimmed when I bought the hp cape. So I'm guessing you need to leave the untrimmed capes on the ground in f2p until after you've bought any other capes.

Guthan, Dharok, Torag's plates have the same stats. Guthan is usually cheapest. Torag and Dharok legs have the same stats. Torag is usually cheaper. Verac's skirt has slightly less ranged defence than either legs but a nice prayer bonus. It is usually more expensive. You should obviously be using a black mask/slayer mask so the only barrows helm worth getting is Guthan's if you need it for healing.

Try high defence melee barrows parts + a whip. Take a terrorbird with sharks. Switch to Guthans and a whip if you take too much damage. Pray against ranged.

I think you need to be more specific about what kind of stuff you want and how much you plan to spend. For general melee gear at 70 defence without considering risk: Neit, Verac's, or Guthan's/Torag's helm Guthan/Torag/Dharok's body or Bandos chest Torag/Dharok/Verac legs or Bandos tasset Obsidian or fire cape Dragon boots Whip Defender or obsidian shield Berserker/warrior ring Fury or glory Best RFD gloves you have access to DDS, dragon claws, Armadyl god sword, Korasi's (after questing) for special attacks Full Dharok's can be nice in certain situations. Karil's is great for the mage defence if you get ranged up. I would recommend getting at least 70 prayer and getting piety.
