  1. they are just as strong too.
  2. i will try to put this thing back on the rails with an update: the arboretum has been conspicuously empty during my last few visits there.
  3. yay. I will try and come :).
  4. oh i meant to append that sentence with *without it getting on their nerves*.
  5. hmm so it's a highly developed form of begging.
  6. aw i didn't. i should have before jumping in and replying to your comment. that's interesting information. well i don't really think he was implying it was major suffering or anything like that - seemed to be expressing the typical aversion to grinding that many people have. the reason why rs players who don't like the grinding put up with it is, i think, for the rewards one gets from doing it, or perceived rewards. plenty of people work jobs they don't like in order to do the things that having more money allows them to do.
  7. ???!!!! If playing the game is such a torturous experience, why bother? Go out and do something useful (and more rewarding!) for society! this comment bothered me so i'm going reply to it. i don't think it was a nice thing to say. you lashed out at that person simply because they shared a view which threatened your view of rs. i think the only reason why you would feel so affronted by a comment such as the one N64 made is if you are very sensitive to the idea of someone suffering through something which you enjoy, if avoiding that reality about rs is important to your own enjoyment of it. of course there is no reason why someone who identifies as suffering through aspects of rs should stop playing and do something more useful with their time any more than someone who enjoys those same aspects should.
  8. how did you come up with 28?
  9. the thing that would most convince me of what the impacts of such a change would likely be, would be data from people from other forums who have experienced this change :).
  10. in addition you need to feel comfortable slapping the other person when they do something the slightest bit agitating to you.
  11. interesting. i will personally be upvoting or liking all posts associated with harpies .
  12. someway to tell which posts are likely accurate does sounds a bit useful. on the other hand i think there is already a pretty good heuristic for that: did quyneax post it or not. upvotes certainly don't sound like an optimal solution to that problem to me though.
  13. saying a short "i appreciated your post" is fine i think, and does more to show appreciation than an upvote would. if the mods have a problem with too much of that you could of course also send the OP a short pm.
  14. in what sense do you think this question is 'pressing'? e.g pressing because you think about it a lot and it weighs down on you, pressing because without this definition straightened out we would all act like savages, etc.?
  15. no, not offensive. thinking someone is a true friend is a feeling about them more than anything else i think. what a true friend looks like probably differs considerably between people. but if you ask someone - is so and so a true friend of yours? - i think probably a good general way to determine that the answer will be 'yes' is if the person feels that they are each other's friends - if they feel that the positive emotions and opinions and thoughts that they have about the other person are reciprocated. broadly: 1. you have to feel a certain way about the friend 2. you have to think the friend feels a certain way about you. what that certain way is will depend on the person. i interpret the phrase 'true friend' to mean a friendship you don't have insecurities about, hence it is a friendship that you feel is 'true'. and one of the most prevalent insecurities, in my mind, is feeling the other person doesn't feel the same way about the friendship that you do. ^ the conditions i mentioned ensure that that is not the case i think. I hope that explains my statement a little more for you :).
  16. while 'it's a continuum' can succinctly explain a lot of things fairly well i think, i'm not sure efficiency as it relates to rs is one of them. i really like the point hedgehog made though - defining efficiency as the function which inputs two variables and outputs their quotient (compares them) sounds really good to me. i think it establishes very clear foundations for efficiency discussion so, efficiency(x,y)=x/y.
  17. a true friend is someone you feel is your friend and who feels you are their friend. the criteria for making that magic happen depends on the people :).
  18. The most valuable ratio to the most people is xp/time. and it seems so much more valuable than the other calculable ratios (xp/gp, xp/action) that i think anyone wanting those numbers for things is likely confused about what they want and should be gently persuaded that the xp/time data is what would be more useful to them. so, i'm in agreement with quyneax on this one. no adverbs are necessary. it doesn't seem like a bad idea to have a sticky about efficiency on help and advice though so grave errors like mistaking 'cost efficient' for 'cheap' don't start debates into the nature of efficiency. (instead we'd be able to direct those people to a thread that we all agree on :)). this would also help put to rest the more subtle ongoing disputes people have with each other about efficiency.
  19. and the hero's who sustain the market for rs gold.
  20. interesting - i will have to inspect the cb levels of such players in the future. I really do think it would be quite odd for so many people to be using them instead of rune darts. but perhaps it is a combination of people there for different purposes. if I do recall, a substantial amount of time in the quest takes place there.
  21. when you teleport to darkmeyer you end up in the hallway between the door to the Arboretum, and the door to outside. Someone looking to chop the bloodwood tree doesn't end up in the Arboretum, no way, no how. it was a good hypothesis given your knowledge though :).
  22. Whenever I teleport to darkmeyer to chop that bloodwood tree (yes i do that..) I always see someone in the Arboretum (for those who aren't familiar with that word - the place where the contraption that is the blisterwood tree resides). I haven't brought myself to inspect what they're doing, but i have bad feeling about it. what could it be? . Maybe they are all doing the quest, but i find that unlikely. If that's not the cause, why would they be chopping blisterwood? Anyone have any ideas?
  23. if that was always true, then what you said would be obviously correct. but that's not how it works - about half the time the hc takes two hits, and if the hand cannon ended up doing more damage per period of melee pray of the TD than the x bow, that is not necessarily a good thing - that means more of the kill it being done by the weapon with the lower dps (hc) than the one with higher dps (chaotic maul). it's okay if you're not willing to read my posts carefully on this thread. i guess you think that minimizing # of switches is the most important consideration. i think another consideration is more important - the consideration of how much % of the kill each of your styles do (of course this only matters when the dps of each style differ significantly, but that does turn out to be the case). the % of the kill each style does is proportional to the maximum hit of the style. if range is significantly weaker than melee, then there's some value in reducing the percentage of the kill that it is responsible for (for example by using a maul and the x-bow instead of a rapier and a hc). sorry i'm repeating myself. the value of this thread is dependent on it being an obvious adjustment to make. turns out it's not obvious, so i don't think it's valuable. i would like you to be able to understand what i'm saying, but it's something i can live without.
  24. aw it's not really that scrambled is it? i think maybe it's something that to be explained well needs terms to be defined and so on. but no one likes learning terms. alternatively, i think it is something that is maybe flawed. == it doesn't follow that because the hand cannon hits higher than the x bow that the td will stay on melee prayer for a shorter amount of time. If the hand cannon was really slow, that might not be true. I don't want to go into a long scambled explanation again *sigh*. but one can calculate how much damage a range weapon does per period of the TD praying melee (like by simulating it a bunch of times). (if the weapon is really weak it will be ~300). this is an important quantity. if your range weapon does an average of 380 damage per period of TD prayer melee, and your melee weapon 450 damage per period of TD praying range, then you can figure out how much easy style contributes to the kill (for example the range weapon would contribute 100*380/(450+380)% of the kill on average do you follow that? it is true i have some slight internal confusion about something i said in the OP. but it's very slight and i think i resolved it. the confusion was about whether weapons on TDS inflict damage in a theoretically uniform way (i.e even numbers of each hitsplat). even though you switch weapons at non-random times, the answer must be yes. so, i think ]everything i said is okay.
  25. so - just a minor correction to how we might want to be discussing which weapons to use at tds (or at anything which prayer switches in the way that tds do). Rather than calculate dps by averaging the dps of the melee and range or melee and magic components, we should weight the components by their maximum damage. (the reason the weight is simply linear in max hit may be obvious enough to accept, but it can also be verified empirically). implications are: karils x-bow is better in relation to the hand cannon than we thought it was, with the same observation going for c maul and c rapier (because we want to minimize the damage of the weaker style and maximize the damage of the stronger style for maximum dps). now there are other considerations - like how fast you can switch weapons and so on (so there is some value to also minimizing the number of switches and degree of difficulty of each one); however, i think this is just as important a consideration, and one that i have not seen made. So, if you are scavenging for leverage in your td efficiency arguments, you can use this fact.
