"Baby Killer" given life sentence
In response to ember3579 and urbestfriend simultaneously. Yes, I have heard of the term prison break, but the fact that there have been no escapees of this level in at least my living memory means the prison is about as safe as anywhere. He's not a gang member, no one's going to try and spring him and somehow I doubt he has the capacity to get out himself. If you think criminals like that don't deserve the air they breathe then fine, but that's a difference of opinion. But I can't see any ethical or moral justification in killing them, just your financial reasons. I'd rather he died in prison after having to live with what he's done for the rest of his life than being given a quick way out. The cost associated with the death penalty isn't the cost of the chemicals used to kill them, it's the cost associated with making sure the person committed the crime they did. To find a case where it's absolutely certain that the person committed the crime is very rare, and mistakes are frequently made. Fortunately when they've been sent to prison those mistakes are in someways reversible. If they're dead where's the comfort for their families who knew they were innocent all along. To be blunt, I wouldn't mind seeing this monster killed if I didn't think it would be going too easy for him. But i'm against the death penalty in principle because black and white cases like this are so rare that too many mistakes could be made.

Most Beautiful TV Series?
I wouldn't call either of the whole shows beautiful, but The West Wing and Heroes have both definitely had their moments.

What are you listening to right now!?
Of all the Tool albums i've listened to, I'd consider Lateralus my favourite. Of course their others are still very good. We Have All The Time In The World - Louis Armstrong Something about this guy's voice just makes me feel so happy. It has an old world charm and warmth.

Is God real post your thoughts!
Different useage of the word. Evolution is a scientific theory with empiral observations that can (and have) been tested. Just like every other scientific theory. Religion, almost by definition, deals with objects outside the realm of what is directly testable. No, you think he's an idiot.

Pictures of your cell phones.
I have a Razr too, it's fine, but the front screen is all cracked. I suppose a shiny iPhone would be nice, but I don't use it enough to justify that kind of money. As long as it texts and makes calls that's all I need it for really.

Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross offend people
Couldn't agree more. The second Jonathan blurted out "he [slept with] your granddaughter!" I was in fits of laughter. Russell's left loads of similar messages on other people's phones, most people just take them in good humour. I can see why Andrew Sachs might get a bit upset, but I don't quite know why he had to make such a scene about it. I agree it's not as good without Matt, but I don't think he'll be away for that much longer. Hopefully just taking an extended sabbatical and spending some time in LA.

"Baby Killer" given life sentence
Serving it's purpose? What purpose is that? To waste the taxpayers money to house a killer, giving him 3 meals a day, water, television, recreation time (lift weights, play basketball, etc)? Why spend..what was it, $60,000 a year (or was it 30?), when we could get rid of some 15-20k prisioners, for the cost of one? He killed her, you can't dispute that. So, why are we going to spend 1.3 million keeping him safe and well cared for? He's being kept alive in prison, nothing more. He'll be at a maximum security prison and those things aren't holiday camps. If your justification for actively killing 15000-20000 people is that they're simply taking up too much space then I think your morals are as shaky as some of the people you're trying to kill. Besides, the death penalty isn't cheaper.

The Killers: Human; Their worst even song by FAR.
I actually really like that song :P It gets a bit cheesy about 1:13 in but I don't care, it just sounds like The Killers.

General Guitar discussion
Could anyone recommend me some decent pedals? I don't have anything too specific in mind, but I've always hankered after a wah sound, big muff style sound or a whammy. I wasn't looking to spend too much money so if anyone has any non-branded suggestions I'd appreciate them. Alternatively i'll maybe just buy a single Dunlop Wah or something and save up for the rest.

What movie(s) did you last see?
Watched Happy Feet again last night, it's such a feel good film but the music animation sequences are great. Never patronising or too clichéd like many children's films.

Georges Street/The Tartar Frigate - Rodrigo Y Gabriela Off a re-release of their first album, Re-Foc. Slightly less virtuoso playing and more them finding their cultural base to work from. Still some very impressive playing though.

"Baby Killer" given life sentence
As sickening as it is, the moment you start talking about torture or killing that person you're just descending to their level and seeking retribution. Prison serves it's purpose, he'll never get let out and society will be rid of him. But the second you start legislating official state execution you're overstepping the line.

I might agree if I confined myself to looking at the Earth, but then I look at the scale of Universe and the mind simply boggles. It's very humbling. This is a fantastic video for gaining a sense of perspective.

Freedom of Speech
Baron's pretty much nailed it in this thread. Unlimited freedom of speech would be to the detriment of society, but the laws are reasonably well defined and (at the moment) protected.

I'm not biting. Keep your opinions of the man if you want, I doubt I'm going to change them anytime soon, just try and look at the other side of the debate once in a while.

Working out topic
I've changed my workout a bit to try and bust a slight plateau I was having on certain muscle groups. Instead of doing biceps and triceps on the same day i'm now doing back and biceps and chest with triceps. Had my back/biceps day a few nights ago and my back is sore like it hasn't been in ages, which is great. I was deadlifting more than I've ever done before though, going for mass building exercises with the back and total muscle fatigue on the biceps.

http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/dawkins.htm I think that just about wraps that case up, wouldn't you say? Come one, now. Why the hell am I, the non-atheist, listening to more of what RD says than you? Either you're really not listening to the things he says/things he writes or you're just willfully ignoring them. I like the guy who called RD a real life troll who gets paid to mess with theists. Or maybe you're taking the extremes of his quotes and using them to misrepresent his entire stance? I'm sure if you've listened to so much of what he says, you'll also be aware of his soft spot for the Church of England, his friendly discussions with many senior bishops and his absolute reverence for many religious pieces of art, music and architecture. Yes, Richard Dawkins is anti-theistic. But that doesn't mean he goes around calling all religious people idiots.

Clearly you weren't thinking very hard. To name only philosophers, and only a vanishing few at that: David Hume Ayn Rand Bertrand Russell Peter Singer Karl Marx Nietzche Jean-Paul Sartre Daniel Dennet Noam Chomsky They're all atheist philosophers, and some of the greatest of all time (in my humble opinion). That's neglecting the vast majority of scientists (not just great ones) who are atheists, numerous politicians, comedians, authors, sportsmen, businessmen, activists etc. etc... But this still tells us nothing, arguing from the authority of a few great people is a logical fallacy. You need to look at the reasons for why they believe or don't believe. Gandhi may have been a revolutionary but he was also a luddite who would have seen India go back to pre-industrial feudal economics. Martin Luther King Jr. campaigned for black rights, but his opposition weren't atheists, their faith was as strong as his. Mother Teresa endlessly proselytised, often to the detriment of her patients, and had many doubts about her faith. I don't know what you're trying to suggest, but I can guess, and it's not worth going down that route. So in what sense can something be said to exist if there is no physical proof for it? This is where I can never see eye to eye with theists.
