  1. I'd always thought the IB favoured breadth over depth? That may make it harder but I didn't think it went into quite as much detail compared to certain A-levels (i.e. Further Maths).
  2. How does the university admissions process work in America? Do they select based on your GPA? How many can/do you apply to?
  3. This issue has now been resolved, locked.
  4. Stronger - Kanye West
  5. I turned 18 in October and haven't even had to use my ID yet. Nice to know it's there though.
  6. That's interesting about the A* thing at A level. We're not having them because we've already had a year, but it seems like quite a strange way to calculate it. Oxbridge aren't even bothering to consider them yet since they don't know how representative they are. Cambridge ask for all your individual UMS marks anyway.
  7. Please use the sticky for stuff like this. Locked.
  8. I think it's a fantastic album, unashamedly dance rock. A Dustland Fairytale is probably my favourite off it.
  9. Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago was my favourite album of 2008 by far, and possibly of all time. Coming a close second was Fleet Foxes' debut. There've been a lot of great albums otherwise, which I might list later but these have been the two really stand out ones for me.
  10. The British system pretty much just works on letter denoted grades at GCSE ranging from G -> A*. Then at AS and A2 level (A-level) you take multiple modular exams each (very roughly) out of 100 UMS marks. So you take three for an AS level in the subject and 6 for an A2 level in it. 480/600 and above is an A at A2, and the system just works from U (fail) starting again at E -> A.
  11. Yes. Prove it doesnt. Fallacy, the burden of proof is on you if you claim it's existence.
  12. The problem with your argument fails at the premise that no woman could ever enjoy prostitution. I agree the majority wouldn't enjoy the profession, but it's never been a majority profession. There are women who do enjoy prostitution because they do it willingly in places where it's legal and enjoy their jobs.
  13. Human - The Killers I love this song.
  14. That's a very naive comparison. Saruman's taking a very pragmatic (and in my opinion) sensible stance, he's aware that whatever you do with the laws prostitution will still exist, you can only drive it underground by making it illegal. Killing people is nothing like prostitution. I saw a Stephen Fry documentary recently where he visited a legal brothel in Nevada. It was a model business run by a very competent lady. All the prostitutes were pretty much their own business women who used the premises and paid commission. All the girls had regular health checks and would check all the men before they started. It was safe and contributing to the economy. Granted i'm not sure i'm entirely comfortable with the morality of the situation, but i'm not naive enough to think that making it illegal will get rid of the problem. That simply gets the girls drawn into crime and gangs.
  15. She Builds Quick Machines - Velvet Revolver
  16. Pretty much anything by Morrissey
  17. I've found it quite interesting reading through how many of you find men too immature to spend time with. I find it completely the opposite way. Even having two sisters, I just can't seem to relate to girls and find many of them silly and unfunny. I also generally find women highly complicated creatures to have as friends. My close friends are all guys, all highly intelligent, ambitious and will be very successful but we can still all be debating politics seriously one minute then making crude jokes the next. I don't think i'd want it any other way.

I have a black, 3/4 length overcoat, not too dissimilar to this, which I wear over my suit and when I'm dressed slightly more formally. I also have a downy Gap jacket for walks through woods.
  19. Shinjula, it's interesting that you should propose belief in a God because of your studies in mathematics, since many other mathematicians also claim to have a similar kind of awe at the beauty of mathematics, myself included. But I don't really see why this shows the evidence for a higher agency. The example you gave of Euler's identity is indeed remarkable and truly astonishing. But the reason why it should be so is merely a property of the relationships between numbers. It's not arbitary, but neither is it designed. It just is. There are many mathematicians who call themselves atheists but still believe in some Platonic world of perfect mathematical forms. They don't attribute any existence in the physical sense of the word to this world, it's just an abstraction that helps remove mathematics from the empirical sciences.
  20. By that logic, nothing exists. We might as well say houses don't exist either. Different kind of existence though. Houses have spatial existence, time is different. The laws of physics are certainly spatially determinant, but some think that quantum laws take their true form when expressed in timeless configuration states, where every single instant of "now" is expressed simultaneously. Essentially it's an empircal question. Of course we perceive the flow of time, but our intuition about the world doesn't correlate to its correctness. When/if the fundamental laws of physics are found, their dependence on time might help shed some light on its existence.
  21. Holy Thursday - David Axelrod
  22. I quite like some of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani's stuff, but as a rule I don't go for virtuosos. I like something behind the music, some kind of soul or story.
  23. I've had some close female friends in the past, but never really been able to sustain any kind of friendship with them. It's probably partly because I've been at an all boys school most of my adolescent life, and partly because I dislike more girls than I like. I feel like on some level I could get on with pretty much any guy for at least 5 minutes or so but it's not the same with girls. The friendships that have lasted and remained strong are all with guy friends. I know it's terrible, but I find it very hard not to lust after girls even when they are just friends.
