Somewhat along those lines. Its a straight forwards RPG, where you control one person at a time.

Hey peoples, I am looking for some feedback on a game I am thinking of running for outside of Tavern, so any help would be much appreciated. Basically, Space. The difference is that there will be a money system, the puzzle system will be altered to focus on science tasks, there is a new command system and a slightly different respawn system. So, from the top: The money system will be based broadly on the DnD system. You do adventures, you get loot, huzzah. The money will then be used to buy better weapons for players. As well as armour, buying new ships, ect. Money would be awarded (in addition) for the extent to which you, individually, succeeded (Percentage based, as discussed later). The puzzle system would be a mix of crosswords, anagrams and other such. They would mainly be used for interpreting sensor data (Hacking, repairing a peice of alien tech, conducting a surgical procedure) and would be based on the number of successes within a time limit. Aka if scanning for cloaked ships in a DC 8 task, then you would need 8 successes within the time limit. The command system would be broken down into four stripes: Medical - Green shirts Science - Blue shirts Command - Gold shirts Engineering - Gray shirts Medical would get 1 free success in medical tasks, Science same in Science tasks, Engineering same in Engineering tasks. Command works in a different way, with a hierachy for bonuses in ground/space combat, or diplomacy. Now, the respawn system and level system work like so: The game is set on a Space Station, with a fleet of ships for missions. Players have 'main' characters and a collective pool of 10 respawns per session with no ill effects. Going over that limit causes loss of levels. (Left-over respawns don't have any effect, however you can 'increase the difficulty' by having less respawns, which increases the rewards.) Players can also have secondary characters (since the group will be split fairly often). They also have 'red shirts' who they can use in place of their main character. The first death (per person) is free, but after that the number of group loses cuts into the extra money (no matter what alignment you are). Leveling is very simple, you choose one of the 4 catagories when you gain a level. You level dependant on mission score, which is given as a percentage. The amount of % adds up, with level 2 requiring 100, level 3 requring 125, level 4 - 150 and so on. (Ergo it is designed for rapid advancement to begin with, with slower advancement later on) Your Rank has minor ingame value, basically allowing you to boss other players about. Rank increases are given on an exceptional completion of a mission, or continually high mission scores. It is generally assumed that people start as Captains or Commanders, though one person may start as a Commodore. (Simply put, Captain's command ships, Commanders are just below them, and Commodores are just below Admiral) The game itself varies between fleet action (Planet X is under attack by Aliens Y), though degrees of fleet management also come into it, since flying around with your whole fleet in tow leaves your base under-defended, and sometimes there will be multiple threats. (added to percieved threats) Then there is ship to ship interactions, as well as ground actions, of course. Fleet management comes up every so often, while most sessions would have ship-ground action. So yeah, any thoughts?

Do we have a specific time for tommorow's session yet?

I think Wyvern would only be annoyed if you decided to play a OP character =P

If I don't mind you swiping the name that I came up with originally... =P Seriously, I appreciate when anyone uses anything I create so feel free =)

Personally I have really wanted to GM for a while now (I keep getting ideas so its driving me crazy not running them), its mainly that: Retech disagrees with my version of commonsense (Which is understandable) so rarely takes part. Mather does not obey roleplaying conventions, making everything a protracted discussion. Aside from that...I really need players who will take charge of their own destiny. Anywho, as to themather's forum...really bad colour for the 'admins'...its barely readable and the title really looks ugly. Partly because the Tavern isn't a refined letterhead but a rough and ready sort of a bar which doesn't set too much score by how it looks. (Ironically looking highclass is bad) Partly because yellow is a god awful colour on gray. Really, you want a title that doesn't take itself too seriously and ultimately...a title that says nothing because it really doesn't matter and will annoy people the more they see it. For instance, this is far less ghastly:

Humour is a good indicator for a good community. Its hard to regain it during rule debates and rage attacks against Mather and Lei. Given our rocky history with...well...the rest of the forum...I am not sure how. Also our current lack of games makes it difficult =P Really, if we found some outside GM who came in with a game idea, and then people signed up, and stayed signed up...we could restart the forum. Wyvern has achieved something with his game, but since he doesn't enjoy running it I can't say its sustainable.
-
Yup. Mather, post a link to your new forum when you create it. You will be free of the tedious 'rules' that the 'tyrannical admin' 'force' us to obey. As to the 'community restarting'...There is near enough zero chance...Lets be honest, Retech and Mather are the only people who have consistantly played games they were in (and are still around). Ross left, Grim has other commitments, Dusty left, Doom left, Spork/Stork are unreliable/left, Ico is unreliable, Nex is unreliable, I am a god awful player, Wyvern seems uninterested, Earth left, Mask and Iey are unknowns... Basically there is a population of 4 people (Retech, Mather, Mask, Iey), one of which needs to be the GM, so 3 players. The Tavern had a good run...A Golden Age of Hegemony and Dungeoneering, and a Silver Age of Hegemony(Retech/Dusty) and Space...A Bronze Age is possible, but I can't see it.
-
I agree with Iey. We shouldn't confuse activity with achievement. Personally...people have moved on, so while we can come up with new games and such, we don't have the people to play them. I don't think its going to revive itself, and short of 5 fresh-eyed roleplayers appearing from the ether I don't think it can be revived. (And even with these 5 fresh roleplayers I would imagine the innevitable arguments between the old-timers would drive them away again.) So my opinion is to let it die rather than trying to keep it alive with a diminishing population. Maybe, in the future, a new roleplaying forum will be opened and a new crowd start new games...until then, the Tavern just scares people off.

We are playing on Sunday (Checked with Wyvern this morning) (Which has had the unfortunate side effect of me spending the day watching Bond films, rather than writing the assignment due for Monday...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistice_day Have we learned anything in the past 93 years? Do we still remember? Discuss =P

Anyone, except Paul, played Wurm Online before? Its like a cross between HnH and Dungeoneering...quite addictive and open ended...though you die a lot =P Also they have Player Vs Environment (Rather than player verse player) so Sere won't pop up and loot your stuff periodically. There is also a rather good  (long  ) Tutorial. If anyone is interested I am trying to start a settlement on Freedom Isles (Dedication server), so let me know. http://www.wurmonline.com/

She would be level 6, assuming we did infact level up last session. Or level 5 if we didn't (Huzzah for 7 more sessions till she catches up)
-
Ok. Retech has been eaten by some sort of Mythical/Whale Creature...that or he has been captured, seasoned with sea salt and lightly boiled until tender. At approximately - Day 2, hour 16 Caliber and Loran (And Kazi, and Martel, and Cathran) are in a hastily constructed shelter - Day 2, Hour 9 Kazi and Martel are held prisoner/escaped the battle/about to be attacked on the ship - Day 2/1 Cathran is wandering about Kel's Maw, the shrine to Kel in the mountains. We are heading to the northern spit (The long beach) in the hopes of finding the Teeth of Kel, hoping that leads to the Orb of Ruby. Oh, Wyvern will probably be adding a rule against sitting in the channel while playing another game/doing homework while playing. I would imagine he would allow you to sit in the channel if you had sent him your character sheet, and your character just played the part as an NPC(or a communal PC, or some such). Its just when you have a character that does nothing, skips all the checks and such, until they are useful, then attempt to save the day, then disappear again.
-
Rogar Wilco. Can you send me your character sheet before then.
-
Well, it makes sense to move any 'Games in Draft' to 'Drafts in Storage' if they haven't attracted any attention. For instantance, I have no intention of running a Hegemony game currently, but I have no problem with someone using the system.
-
An hour! Back when I was doing chemistry we thought a hour to sleep was a luxury! Anywho, if either of those times are preferable for Grim then we should go for that one...if neither then I would say Friday serves best.

With Dungeoneering games it is kinda better to start off with no clear ideas on how the world is set up. Anywho, random idea for a Hegemony addon: Revolutions/Elections. Basically: For a Democracy, every 2-8(decided by whoever is controlling the country) years/turns there is an election. If you score 10+modifers or less then you stay in power, if you score more than 10+mods then you lose control of your country. For a Dictatorship/Other, every 10 years you have a chance of dying, which may lead to a revolution. If you score 15+modifers or less then you stay alive, if you score more than 10+mods you die and then make the 'Democracy' check to see if you stay in power, or lose control. (This isn't neccessarily an election, so you can be widely hated if your Dictatorship is Hereditary or you are the pawn of Big Bussiness so they replace you with someone similar.) Each check age check a Dictatorship makes has decreases the score you can get and still remain alive. So your second check is at -1, third is at -2, ect, so you are more likely to die the older you get. If you lose control of your country then you name is added to a list for that year and you may select any country(except your own) on the list, or NPC, to take control of. If you take control of an NPC then you can either stick with the New Country or for your old country to lose control again. If another player takes control of your country, and divides it up, or changes the election scheme then this prompts an immediate check for each action, if you win you can retake control of your country immediately. If they declare war, or make other smaller changes, then you have to live with the consequences. People can obviously do things to make themselves more popular before they come up against checks. For instance giving away money. But it should be stressed that these circumstance bonuses should never amount to more than 5, and unless there are justifed reasons there should be penalities as well (For instance, Russia suddenly surrendering Siberia to China isn't going to go down well with the Russian people so would be at -5) The player who normally controls the country doesn't have to make these checks, obviously, though, for Democracies, they may get a penalty at the election. If no one takes control of your country it just carries on, growing at whatever the mod feels is normal. Mods are obviously decided ad hoc or defined at the start of a game. For instance if you have Secret Police then you are more likely to stay in power for longer. If your country is in the middle of a revolution, or just absorbed two new countries and gave them voting rights so they weren't annoyed with you, then you a less likely to stay in power. Similarly, if you are in a Dictatorship based on the Army supporting you and you have cut defence spending and agreed to the Hague Convention against the Armies advice, they are less likely to support you. Plotting coups and whatnot also can occur. If the coup is basically 'Shoot the leader and assume control' then the check happens with appropriate mods(Probably fairly low odds of succeeding unless the people really hate their leader, or you are especially cunning). If the coup is an Armed Uprising then the uprising must first succeed, then make a check with the mods (Higher chance of success if you have killed all the alternatives and such). Why have this? Well, because it makes the game more interesting. Rather than playing with 'unlimited time', you have a much more focused gameplay strategy. It also means games are not so easy to "win" and the game ends, mirroring the ebb and flow of history....You can win a war and redraw the map without killing the game.

I would suppose that it depends on how Ross votes, if he can make Sunday evening/morning then its less of a problem (While Retech is very useful, and obviously it would be nice to have him there  gotta think in terms of my own enjoyment, and that is 2 sessions per 2 weeks is better than 1 session per two weeks). If not then the same extends to Grim (Though it nicer to have him there, since his character is more well known, and he is less prone to 'Be a Wizard' ) Anywho, if Ross can only make mondays, or something, then we should reconsider...losing one person is 'better' than losing a 26 sessions a year.
-
Pretty much free all the times you specified. I would like to request Sunday Evening as my first choice though (Its considerably better for me, though obviously Ross and Grim will probably have a problem, given they usually disappear before 6pm, your time) Monday/Friday would be my second choice, as I am free on both occassions, and have nothing else on those days...Mondays are favourable, but not by much. Saturday I can do, but would prefer not to as it would effectively mean I would need to do everything for Monday 3 days in advance(aka on Friday)...and I don't do foreplanning particularly well =P For reference, mainly for Ross, 8 pm CST is 2 am GMT.

I am having an idea to restart Dungeoneering... The premise draws on Space, and Pathfinder Experiances as well...Basically the game is "The Guild". People play members(high or low ranking) members of [place name here] Guild, complete with Guild Tower. You can, if you so choose, form a second Guild and compete with the first guild...entirely up to you. Anyway, if you decide to be a high ranking member of the guild (This is an example peice, you may choose different High Ranking members...such as Blacksmith, for instance) Then you rule over the Wing of the Guild you control. This means different things for different positions...For instance the Enforcer gets a number of guards and such, while the Mage mostly works on their own, or with their apprentice(s). If you decide to be a lower ranking member then you have 1 buddy who you also control, and both must belong to one of the Wings(not neccessarily the same). Character Creation: http://www.aberddu.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Character_Generation http://www.aberddu.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Category:Races http://www.aberddu.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Category:Classes http://www.aberddu.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Category:Skills http://www.aberddu.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Skill_Cost For reference, each character starts with 50 XP to be spent (Purebloods get 15 extra). Any questions?

So basically we are locking this thread, archiving it for posterity, and creating a new one with stricter guidelines about random chat, while also recommending the use of IRC for discussion purposes. Well, the vote was definately worthwhile  Congratualations Iey, hopefully with you onboard the Tavern won't sink and drag Stork down
-
Yes...Cept Dusty didn't give you anything for those techs. And you didn't get more stuff...you just spent more money  True if anyone thought of anything you probably had a class that covered it...But if no one was thinking of anything then you are pretty much at Dusty's knowledge of historical tech alone...verses his knowledge of Revolutionary France. I know which side of that balance I would want to be =p
-
I think...in simplest terms...It would say 'This is off-topic discussion, mod, take action.' Or 'Mather, Lei, Stop Posting Your Stuff!' Not overly sure which...as neither seems likely to work. Because at the moment, due to incoherant and unexplained operations(creation of the backroom as an off-topic thread inside another board), the Backroom is just a dumping ground...and really, who wants to live next to a dumping ground? I ask you. I personally favour Stork's idea because people who aren't in the Tavern (aka, Admin, other Mods) aren't going to dismiss our complaints. Cept Rev France was getting extra resources left right and center...and would have probably continued to get them... Where as Rev Russia would have had to reinvest everything to match Rev France...and even then would be at the mercy of Dusty, since Techs are released at his disgression(Given a sizable portion of techs were created by my imagination and sent out by Dusty to everyone else...and when you killed me off I would have probably stopped imagining, thus leaving you spending all your money on pipedreams)...and would have died a death when Doom allied with some conquered countries...Like Prussia, Italy, Austria, England.... I think Rev France got a 200% bonus to income...so all it needed to do was conquer a handful of territories and its income far exceeds yours. And that income would have probably increased (What with the Dusty Hand of History) Also Rev Russia would have probably revolted again to get rid of the Czarina...so it was very much placing all your money on one horse, when that horse is carrying a sachel charge, to which one of the other race horse owners has the detonator.

I think that is what everyone except me and Doom were aiming for. I was aiming for current status quo. Doom was aiming at Hegemony. And pretty much everyone was revolutionary....
