6600GT Play RuneScape OK?
No it doesn't. If the beta does use D3d and OpenGL it wouldn't make a difference anyway. Jagex would have to recode the game to make use of them.

Having trouble with hard drive partition
How about Fdisk? Cfdisk? *fdisk (some other fdisk I don't remember).

Computer Problem
I'm quoting this from someone else, I wish I thought of it: "Celerons are exactly the same as Pentiums, they're just made of celery." So I don't see what you problem's you've had if they're bascially the same.

The Rasterbator - make huge wall decorations on your printer
If you're doing a high quality photo, a lot of ink. Not like a whole cartidge, but definitely a lot.

Computer Problem
Yes XP will install on it. I've seen XP on a 200Mhz processor with 64Mb of RAM with a little tweaking to make it run comfortably.

My laptop, oh noes!
That could happen on a desktop too. If you connect with a wireless card. Actually I have a desktop with a wireless card that I can SSH, FTP, and VNC just fine.

RAM increase possible?
Yeah, he needs DDR 266, which is PC2100 incase you're wondering. How much do you want? I think another 512Mb would be good. Here's some. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145113

Linux
Maybe I should rephrase what I said. I really like XGL, I just hate installing it. I've updated X, video drivers, compilers, installed XGL and it won't work.

/I\Linux Ubuntu Help/I\
Wait, what? Yeah it can. As long as he installs all the server stuff in Ubuntu and he's booted into Ubuntu it'll run fine. What's the problem there?

Need Help
You could try downloading the game through Steam. That way you're sure that the disc is in fact in perfect condition.

Windows XPee
Not only is all the new stuff based on NT, it all has legacy compatability for Win9x and DOS. WTF? If I want to be able to run some DOS program I'll just use something like freeDOS. I'd much rather do that than have that much more crap in the kernel.

A thought...
The optical keyboard is cool, but it costs nearly $200.

I do agree I think they're worth it, but not for someone who has never used linux before.

RAM increase possible?
You want to look at the tab that says memory.

Which Linux Distro?
That is correct, but I would reccomend using sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop for this. It's much easier to remove packages like that with aptitude than with apt. Just to sudo aptitude remove xubuntu-desktop to get rid of it.

half frozen computer
You need to slipstream SP2 into your install disc. Google is your friend for this one.

/\ || || Lol, I definitely wouldn't recommend any of those for a first time linux user. I'd proably go with Ubuntu, just because it's stable and easy.

computer wont turn on
You could get a digital multimeter and check the volatage on the PSU. You do have to short it so it'll work when it's not plugged into the mobo. Just google something like "test power supply" or something.

Windows XPee
Why do you need Vista? Seriously, Vista's system requirements are so high. I'm done with supporting Microsoft at all. All my computers run *nix/Mac OS except for one Windows partition for gaming.

Linux
OMG, I HATE XGL. It wan't it really bad, but it just will not work on my Gentoo box. I've had to update so many things and it still isn't working. I wish it did work though. I also recommend Ubuntu for you first distro. It's Debian based, so I like it. It's easy to use, but it's also able to do advanced things.

Building New computer
Yeah, I'd say come back closer to Christmas. Just to let you know though, Intel says they will have Kentfield processors in the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2007, which definitely means not at Christmas.

Video Card Help
What kind of games are you going to be playing. That makes a huge difference. If you're going to be playing Runescape then Geforce 5 series or a Radeon 9xxx series is perfectly fine (not that I recomend those. Don't buy one). If you're gonna be playing games like Oblivion and FEAR definitely the 7900.

Good value?
Is it a 256Mb Video card or does it share 256Mb of system RAM? That's makes a huge difference.
-
question about memory upgrades
Of course they will. Just build your own laptop. It's just like building a small desktop.

Which Linux Distro?
Well, if you really want Ubuntu, but your computer's too slow, how about XUbuntu? It's Ubuntu, but it uses Xfce for the Desktop environment. I would not suggest Kubuntu on your system, since KDE takes up much more resources than Gnome, but if you really want it all you have to do is: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
