Melee defence is defined by your: Defence level + Melee defence bonus from armour. Ranged defense is defined by your: Defence level + Ranged defence bonus from armour. Magic defence is defined by your: Defence level + Magic level + Magic defence bonus from armour. I hope that made it clearer. You will also get owned alot because of your low HP.

I use arrows... I find that the XP rate is about the same as knives.

I'm not quite sure if you are saying it correctly. As far as I know, there is a base experience that you get per cast, no matter if you slapsh or what you hit. Moreover, you get additional exp (2 expp per point of damage) if you hit. Because the max hit of the Magic Dart varies from 1 to 19*, so does the max exp. It can range from 30 to 68 . *According to Runescape's Knowledge Base. Thanks to all who posted. I'm a ranger, not a mage :)
