  1. Not necessarily. I think the definition of marriage is slowly shifting away from it's religious roots to have a more secular meaning. Of course the more conservative among us hate this, but I do believe it's happening.
  2. Those with the loudest voices are heard the most, but that doesn't mean they're present in higher numbers. It's a fairly common reason for false statistical inferences.
  3. To me there are two separate issues when it comes to abortion - one of morality and one of pragmatism. It's much more pragmatic to make abortions legal for the sake of the women who will have clandestine abortions regardless of the law, because there is no solid correlation between legality and abortion rate. There is one between abortion rate and contraception prevalence, however, and that's where I think efforts in reducing abortion rates should lie. Given this, I admire any pro-life advocate who thinks the legality of abortion is a necessary evil. As for the moral aspect of it, generally speaking I have no problem with abortion, although the further on in development it is, the less likely I'll be ok with it. I would definitely draw the line at third trimester abortions, but as for before then, there's still some grey area for me. I question the assumption that some pro-life advocates make that says that personhood must enter the zygote at one definite point. In my view personhood is much more of an emergent property. Some would say this is a philosophical cop-out of sorts, but I think being a person is far more complex an issue than pro-life advocates suggest.
  4. Im confused. Death metal = black metal Not quite... I'm still yet to really get into black metal, although I have checked out a couple of albums. I've been pretty lazy about it to be honest.

Personally, I find cigarette smoking a disgusting habit, but I'm fine with people doing it so long as it doesn't involve me in any way.
  6. personally i find it quite aesthetic and fitting as the name of the first death metal band, but everyone has their own opinion i guess... I agree, Death is an awesome name. Not that I hate life or anything, it just really fits the style of music. Nice sig by the way. Did you make it yourself?
  7. I'm not really sure about the legal side of it, but I've noticed a similar thing in Australian TV. I don't really know if it's a genuine trend or not, though.

Because there's no proven chance it will help, outside of a placebo effect. Why not rub beads and wish instead? You'll get pretty much the same result as prayer.

Not that I really hate prayer (except for the story that's been brought up..), but I'll offer my point of view. Praying to thank God for something like being healed of a disease often downplays any medical intervention that went on, which is disrepsectful to the doctors that helped you. If I get cancer and reap the rewards of medical science to cure it, I'm going to be thanking people, not God. Apart from that, there's no real harm done, so long as you don't rely on prayer for something. [/hide] That is what praying gets you. Stories like that make me so sick.. It's disgusting how people like that can feel they're doing the right thing when their kid is dieing in front of them. I don't really mind if people pray for loved ones, but if it's a substitute for medical intervention, then I have a massive problem with it. That reminds me of this story- [hide=Story]"There was a man in an area that was about to be consumed by a massive storm. People were climbing aboard a ship to leave the city, due to the coming storm. A seaman yells to the man, " Hey get on the ship we are leaving", but the man says No thanks, God will save me;" the ship left. After an hour or so, a helicopter arrives to pick up any people left over. The pilot yells to the man," Hey, get on we are leaving," But the man refused and said " No thanks, God will save me."; the helicopter left. After another hour passed by, a motor boat comes along with three people on it, one person yells " Hey, get on we are getting the hell out of here". Yet, the man refused and said " No thanks, God will save me" After the motor boat had left, thirty minutes passed by, the man continued to pray. However, soon the storm came and destroyed the city, and killed the man.. The man then went to heaven and asked God " Why did you not save me? God replied: "I sent you a ship and you did not take it. I sent you a helicopter and you did not get on it. I sent you a motor boat, and you did not climb aboard. You died because you refused to listen to me."[/hide] Moral of the story: God helps those who help themselves. He doesn't necessarily always work in supernatural ways. As for the point of the thread, Yes I pray. I am a non-denominational Christian, and I try to be open-minded. Do you believe in free will? That story contradicts it, so I wouldn't be using it to make a point if I were you. As for the old adage "God helps those who help themselves", it really makes God rather redundant, don't you think? If I were to rewrite it, it would simply be "people help themselves". I think we should all take note of that fact and really acknowledge that if we want help, we should rely on ourselves, not a god.
  10. A great album. As a matter of fact I think I checked it out after I saw you say it was one of your favourites. I maintain that Kali has the best outro I've ever heard in music. Bonus points for the bass solo along with guitar solos.
  11. You skipped the best songs(s) Wings for Marie (Pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2) I can't say I got into those as much as the other songs on that album. There just doesn't seem like any coherent "point" to them. I think it was just an attempt to write some songs about his Mother. How she was so devoted to her faith that she was going to heaven and all the half assed Christians that she went to church with were not going to heaven. I also think he was trying to say that when people die they will be judged according to their own beliefs rather than a set of beliefs applied to everyone. I.e. Christians will be judged by their doctrine, Muslims by theirs, and so on. At least that's what I got out of it. I meant a point to the music, not the lyrics. To be honest I'm not that big on lyrics. Whenever I listen to 10,000 days, I can't help but feel all the songs sound like they're going somewhere except Wings 1+2. Those two just sound like they have no solid direction.

  14. I'll admit it, Paramore are a guilty pleasure for me. Tool are great too.
  15. The Common Man's Collapse by Veil of Maya (album). Excellent deathcore.
  16. Consuming Impulse by Pestilence (album) Haven't listened to this in a while. Very awesome stuff.
  17. Beside the issue of pennies being legal tender, the guy making the video was a complete [wagon]. The woman who had to count the pennies had nothing to do with towing his car, but this guy expects her to count all those pennies just to make a point? And if she assumes there really are $88 of pennies and takes them to the bank, then they have to count them. Why make someone else's life difficult just because you were stupid enough to get a parking fine?
  18. Under A Stone With No Inscription by Anata. Entropy Within is one of the most badass songs ever. God I love that tapping. The main riff is catchy as hell too.
  19. Starting to like them more? :) Yeah. It all started to click together after a minute or so of listen #2. There are so many subtle things in their music that I never really noticed first time around. That was definitely my experience with Process of a New Decline. Having listened to it roughly half a dozen times, it's grown on me a lot. I think it was the same for their other two, but I can't remember. And to Nadril, it's not really that you have to analyse it like crazy, you just have to become familiar with it through repeated listens and you'll begin to piece together what Gorod are getting at with their compositions.
  20. What do you think? A Celebration of Guilt by Arsis (album).
  21. Great list. You just know I love some of those death metal albums. :P I'll take this opportunity to check out Wu-Tang Clan and give Madvillain another chance.
  22. How is that album? I don't remember if you've said anything about it or not. It's absolutely incredible, but it's the kind of music that you need to listen through a few times to "get". Not in any pretentious sense, but because it's very technical music. If you remember my albums list thread, it included the album Leading Vision by these guys, but Process of a New Decline or their other album Neurotripsicks would have been easy substitutes. I can honestly say that Gorod are just about the most exciting death metal band to emerge this decade, perhaps only rivaled by Decapitated, Anata and a select few others. If you want to get a taste of what Process is like, the first two tracks are on their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/gorod
  23. Process of a New Decline by Gorod (album).
  24. Spiritual Healing by Death (album).
  25. Personally I love them both. The appeal comes largely with the fact that they write good, original music. Perhaps it's not to everyone's taste, but that doesn't make them bad.
