Hang in there

Don't worry. 85% of this thread (at least) is pure and utter bullcrap. I think in my entire career I've had one student insult me ever and they regretted it. +1, its pretty rare for someone to quit teaching over one incident (and school yards breed urban legends) but its amazing how many peoples stories end with "and then the teacher quit because of me" Teaching is a fun job

Its funny how a lot of people from oz on tipit want to move to NZ, here (NZ) everyone thinks everyone else is moving to Australia (which isnt true) they even have a name for it, it's called the brain drain. But, oz has a really bad reputation too, people are always saying its just like a big NZ, without the scenery, Ive travelled to oz from NZ 3 times and I must say its not much of a culture clash, just bigger. IN NZ we have lower living costs, but a lower minimum wage and average wage However, you are never (...well rarely) more than 2 hours away from either a nice sandy beach, a heavily wooded area or a snowy mountain. Which I like. Well

Tokyo. I love the mix of flash technology and a hardcore old school set of values (if you go to the right places)

I live my life by that quote. No exceptions. Ironic, given that he got the Nobel Prize for chemistry. I thought that was Lord Kelvin, who also said "there is nothing left for physics but further refinement and measurement" (or something similar); referring to the completeness of Newtonian Physics, just before Einstein released his 2 papers on how space and time are relative. Anyway, have you heard of Arthur C Clarke's 3 rules of prediction? It sounds like the kind of thing somebody may regret saying.

I changed your picture

Im all about the 3 day working week. 12.5 hours a day for three days and four days off (40 hours) sounds better than 8 hours a day five days a week and two days off (40 hours) Yes, I have worked 12 hour shifts before

I start studying for about a week before exams start generally getting an idea of what I think will be in the exam. Once exams have started I specialise my study for individual exams. When I sit down to study I quickly jot down some learning outcomes which I have an hour to achieve. I guess its about having SMART goals so you don't leave the study session unsure of what you learnt. Because the outcomes are written they are easy to recap later and make sure you remember. Example: I was pretty sure I was going to get a question about Mao's great leap forward in a recent history exam so my outcome was to study 4 points about the great leap forward that I could turn into an essay as paragraphs. I also test myself at the end of the hour by putting away all my books and trying to write the essay without aid. Anyway thats what I do I agree, I always try to think "what would I want to read if I were marking this?", so I put in some dumb jokes, and crazy conjecture to spice it up a little (while still trying to write a solid essay)

Which twenty20? To be honest, I dont think the windies have been a decent match for the black caps, if Gayle doesnt fire they just fall over, I guess Sarwan is ok as well though. NZ should have smashed them with the strength we have in our middle order and our decent bowlers. I loved the one over smash-off for the draw though, despite Gayle thrashing us

What about learning what you did was wrong and restorative justice?

For me, I'm pretty sure it was rfd Feel free to move to questionnaire's, I just couldn't find it

The difference is that one type of removal is much more effective than the other type. If they are still alive, they still have the ability to do harm. Sure, jailing them can limit the harm they do but it is not an end-all solution which I think is necessary for the type of people we're speaking about. What makes a judge's reasons for wanting the death sentence given to somebody any more justifiable than a regular person's? They are for the same reasons: society would be better off without this person. We know that evidence against somebody is rarely conclusive enough for a criminal to be certainly guilty, this is why it is not completely uncommon for people to be put away unjustly for a length of time before being freed. Death is difficult to undo if this is the case. After typing that I realise your argument will be "what if we are scientifically certain they are guilty?" and my response is; it still isn't right, people don't wake up and decide I'm going to be evil today, they grow up in an unhealthy environment (I'm pretty sure most molesters were once molested) and they honestly don't know any better. I say restorative justice and jail is a more harmonious approach than capital punishment. And harmony should be the ends to which the justice system strives. In saying that I can imagine myself saying 'kill the bastard' in some situations involving people close to me Where I am from judges cant order death, my post assumed this was true where you live too, and it is still my belief that they shouldn't be allowed to, its never humane to kill, especially other humans, no questions (imo). I enjoyed saying my piece and debating with you guys, especially Zierro, but its just against my nature to believe in that kind of punishment, especially as a deterrent. P.S I know your just upset because I have a minutely higher combat level and could write a death sentence on you [wagon]

I thought it was optional i.e. a prison sentence or the chair, that gives them the option

done... but now i can never visit these boards again

I bought my first armour set from the GE but it came in a box! Can anyone tell me how to open it, please P.S. don't tell anyone, its very embarrassing

Which is death. its not a death sentence, its an option Yes, and dont allow yourself to gather enjoyment from that persons suffering

So offer euthanasia as an alternative My interpretation is that you are judged based on how you act and they are judged based on how they act. Seeking revenge and wanting someone dead for your peace of mind is inhumane, hence, you are judged based on that. I bought up that poem because people were arguing that its not fair if you 'lost' more then the criminal (after they are sentenced), and it was right that they should lose more than you. I say stop comparing your loss to their loss based on fairness

Oh but living in a single room for the rest of their life counts as suffering in my book. Why should they have to suffer because they couldn't choose the way they grew up? I say removing them from society (jail) is better than killing them I am supporting the system as it is now, judges are chosen as wise people who make judgements of the severity of peoples crimes and their danger to society, whether they were the original offender or not Again. Suffering. being put in jail would cause you to suffer, but have you seen the lives people live in jail? they arent the extreme suffering that people were endorsing a few pages ago. the reason they suffer is because they are removed from society, which is the point
-
I'm saying you shouldn't have a desire for another person to suffer, in any circumstances. People need to stop comparing themselves to others You know what, I'm sick of explaining this so Im going to let Mother Teresa fill you in. Moral of the story, its not about you and them, or what they did to you and what they deserve for it. You are judges based on how you act, not on how anybody else acts

Someone doesnt have to suffer, that was the point of my post, suffering is a bad thing. People should not want to cause suffering full stop. It doesnt matter what they did to you. yes, there are reasons, but this doent make them justifiable, or even explainable It does go both ways, but just because we don't have a better alternative to the justice system that is in place now, doesnt mean we can justify murder as the "next best option"

When it comes to capital punishment, that's what the true goal is. But also forced suffering serves as a deterant for future crimes, so suffering, to a point, is also something that is, for lack of a better word, helpful. Perks for society when someone is executed is not only the fact that the person can't harm anyone, but they also don't have to be supported by societies tax dollars. It costs $55-65 American near where I live. If someone commits a mass murder at 20 and lives until 50, they will need over $600,000 American to support them. People who are the victims of crime also live in fear that the person who did the crime that affected them will some day be sprung out of prison on some technicality. A death sentence lets them live in peace. Thank you, that is what the true goal is, yet i had to sift through 5 pages of "kill him" "no, he'll suffer more if we hang him upside down and he starves" "yeah, ok, lets do that" There is something wrong with he justice system because it costs so much and clearly doesnt work (most criminals reoffend). But i dont think capital punishment is the solution

Its not about punishment or suffering! If somebody harms you or your family, knowing that they are suffering will not make anything better, for anybody. I am honestly appalled at tipit at the moment, what did your parents teach you? People are the product of their environment, you don't choose your parents (where 90% of your values come from) or your surroundings (the other 10%). If there is a problem with your upbringing and moral development as you grow, it is not your fault, it is the fault of society. Such a problem with your development may lead to you committing a heinous crime, it is not the job of the justice and corrections systems to 'punish' such people, it is their job to make society as safe as possible, remembering that they didn't choose their values, and hence their actions. When I hear about terrible people committing terrible crimes I don't feel angry, sure it makes me sad but the overwhelming emotion is sympathy for the criminal. Because I know that if that is how their behaviours are on the outside it must be a lot worse and messed up on the inside. The argument should not be "how can we make this persons life as miserable as possible because they made my life miserable" it should be about what is best for society, and I can guarantee you forced suffering isn't the answer.

The justice system is about what is best for humanity, specifically the community which the system serves. Decisions made in a courthouse should only reflect this, not act out in anger because you have been wronged. Its called the justice system, not the revenge system for a reason, because its not about punishment or getting whats coming to you. Its about what is safest for the community. No community will survive when they always seek revenge, violence begats violence i think its bad for humanity to kill people in that way
