  1. I think that people misusing welfare systems is overemphasised by the media to induce moral panic. Its a story which everyone has rights to feel upset about, but its not heaps of money and 90% of the time its justified
  2. Im interested in the degree of social welfare you enjoy/don't enjoy in your particular country. Its easy enough to argue political policy but im more interested at a practical level. Perhaps even particular situations that you have been involved in. Here in New Zealand I think its pretty good, we have an unemployment benefit which is enough to live on and free healthcare (providing you hurt yourself in an accident). There isnt too much pressure for you to quickly find a job and a relatively small amount of people abuse the system. My Dad recently broke his neck in a bicycle accident and required several sets of surgery, him and Mum got paid leave and it was all free. During that time I felt pretty fortunate that we lived here.
  3. Whats an FML? I dont really know what you guys are talking about but, OT, My flatmate came home and shaved my pubes while I was sleeping last night, kinda wierd, and itchy
  4. thats one of my favourite books, it also happens to be the book i found hardest to read I used to read for about an hour daily but I stopped once I could use the internet in my room -.- I mainly read sci fi, but any popular adult book is generally readable
  5. Wow. Im surprised this thread wasnt lost in the rollback. I think it may even have been a weekly hot topic. OT: I can survive indefinitely without food or water, unless im in the desert or injured
  6. My brother was on a train in spain (perhaps in maine) when someone stole his wallet out his back pocket and got off the train. He chased the guy and his accomplice through the station when they threw a wallet back at him. This is a common tactic for thieves and John was on to them. He continued to chase them throughout madrid but many corners later lost them. He was completely lost in the 'burbs, in an unfamiliar country. To make things worse, the wallet they threw back was picked up at the station and was his. DOnt do that i guess.
  7. You have to wait, on 10/0ctober/2010 the whole world will change to standardized time, money and measurements all based on units of 10
  8. Did you know Michael Jordan having "retired," with $40 million in endorsements, makes $178,100 a day, working or not. If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head. If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550 while he's there. If he decides to have a 5-minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it. He makes $7,415/hour more than minimum wage. If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him a whole 12 hours. If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would have to do it at the rate of $200 every second. He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be reimbursed $33,390 for that round. He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100-meter dash in the Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon. This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past presidents for all of their terms combined. Amazing isn't it? However... If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 500 years, he'll still have less than Bill Gates has at this very moment. Game over. Nerd wins.
  9. I think computers give people many oppurtunities to practise multitasking. When I am on the computer and I follow a link I instinctively click on another tab so I dont waste 5 precious seconds while the other page loads. This is while I listen to music and am possibly completing an assignment. The new windows operating system (windows 8 or something? Its not released here yet) only allows you to run 3 programs at a time unless you upgrade it somehow, so if you are using media player, firefox and word you cant open adobe or powerpoint, I can see it being very frustrating for people who are used to the status quo.
  10. The draft is slavery, pure and simple. I cant be bothered looking up all the einstein quotes, but is against the bible and democracy not to mention all the other things western civilisation is built on. when it comes to women, its not a question of if, its a question of nobody, whatsoever, ever. Man, you guys surprise me with your ignorance sometimes, gender is selective. study before you post this claptrap.
  11. Im pretty sure all his stuff is set in the 1900's. OT: I know what you mean about an adventure, look a t any rpg and you will see its about wandering around aimlessly to some final goal, you just cant do that. It would be cool though, wandering around, gotta catch them all, POKEMON!
  12. http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/ ... ingularity i thought some of you may be interested in this. My thoughts: Its only a matter of time until schools like this are established which intentionally try to push the envelope, and, after reading some of his accurate predictions, this Kurzweil seems qualified. But something tells me this school is unlikely to be successful. Think-tanks already provide this service successfully enough. But I have been wrong before.
  13. Cheers^ Im going to bump this before I go to bed, just in case, and then let it die
  14. Nobody has bought up the Broom dismissal controversy. What a joke, I'm with Vettori, the Aussies are clearly desperate for a win and you can tell from the replays that Haddin knew what he had done. Its unfortunate that the Australian team thought that retaliating in such fierce defence of Haddin would help clear their/his name, they are just further incriminating themselves by insulting peoples character. [yt]http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=POpUTsVaAv4[/yt] I cant seem to use the new youtube html sorry
  15. Im trying to finish my seers achievement diary and just want to make sure there is no way to boost my cooking and firemaking levels before I grind the next few levels cheers

    Fatalism

I think that, given the rationale, its hard to deny but it becomes dangerous when used as an excuse.
  17. Look at my boobs: 3 minutes Go on tip.it/runescape: 23hours, 57minutes
  18. People who are black. people first language, thanks. What? :? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People-first_language
  19. Hey, one of them got out of its hole! Kenyan =/= Tribal. Kenyans is somewhat developed, as far as African nations go. True, but we are talking 60 years ago, and I did ssay 'basically tribal' making it suitably ambiguous. My point was the change from a string of presidents who are born into money, land ownership and power. People who are black. people first language, thanks.
  20. Please elaborate, what misunderstandings?
  21. Well I agree with the second sentence, but as for the other one - you have no evidence that they aren't going to release the skill. Unless Jagex makes an announcement that states, "We will never be making a Sailing Skill," it is still always fair game. 50/50?
  22. Its good. Its much more than the first black president; 2 generations ago his direct relatives were basically tribal and completely third world, now he is the most powerful man in the world. To me the progress in lessening the social stratification and the poverty gap is more important than anything ethnicity related.
  23. Stats make up all the 99 capes and most quest training (for the quest cape). Runescape is just stats
  24. I would start rumours about what an enormous penis nickeley102 has... Seriously though, I would unashamedly rent out the entire back catalogue of Home and Away that I have missed... Wait, that wasn't serious.
