Yep server lags. A lot of people in my cc have been getting thrown out at the same time when in the same world.

Though slower than some methods, gold is one of the cheaper ways to train smithing at reasonable speed, so yes. As for the location, the Edgeville furnace (as noted above) is a better alternative for the Port Phasmatys one. If you can, superheating or superheating while smelting is great for extra speed, and wielding varrock armour will also give a chance of smelting several bars at the same time.

I'd say keep it. When free trade comes back I doubt many people will be selling rares over the grand exchange anyway, so you should be fine.
