I've never been much of a Runecrafter, but I still say the Fire Altar would be better for you.

If you're looking for financial benefits, I would say to go with Coal, which sells for 150-180ea. However, Iron ore does sell for 100ea nowadays and it is faster xp since a Rune Pickaxe can one-hit an Iron rock.
