noted items and alching

There is a topic on the rants board talking about not being able to dip noted glories anymore. I don't know when this changed, and it really doesn't affect me anyways, since I am f2p. But the discussion got me thinking (as well as posting there) about other noted items...

We all know the reason to note items is to be able to carry large amounts of non-stackable items. This aids in selling items in bulk to banks, npc's and other players. But why oh why, can you alch items that are noted... Let's review.

When trading or selling to a general store, you are basicly giving the player/store owner an I.O.U. They can then take this to any bank, and have the item removed from your account, and put into theirs (irl anyways, the game just skips this step for you). Makes total sense. Like writing a cheque.

But when you alch something, you are using magic to turn an ITEM into gp. If you alch a bunch of paper, you are alching for the worth of the paper, not what is noted on the paper, since it is still, just a piece of paper. If you alch say a steel plate, you are using magic to turn the steel plate into gp, thus it is actually worth more than a piece of paper.

This may not be the best example, but irl, money is only worth the paper it is printed on. It is dependant on how much people are willing to give you for that piece of paper (or coin). Magic on the other hand, will give you the same thing everytime.

I understand why alching is the way it is in the game (ie: noted items), for ease of operations, but I just thought that they changed the way one noted item is used (the glories) to be a little more realistic, so why not others? What does eveyone else think?

And please, those who make thousands of yew longs, or steel plates, or whatever, and sit in a bank for hours on end alching stuff, please don't flame. If you're gonna shoot this idea down, please, leave some constructive criticism... By the way, I make lots of steel plates and alch them. Just recently I found out that you could alch noted items, so I know the pain of only alching 27 items at a time before having to bank...

But think about it, its also in the wild too. If you are wearing stuff in the wild but then you pick up the note (mystic tops for an example) they will protect over your other stuff. Its like the "paper" is worth that and not the item on the paper.

:-$ jagex forgot that one

I think the reason why is b/c its easy to dip glories, but hard to alch thousands of items at a time if you cant alch notes. 1 dip = all glories charged. 1 alch = 1 alch

To that example, it returns to the I.O.U. system. The representation is what it checked, not the paper itself, and the representation is worth more, so it would protect.

As for why Jagex changed it to not being able to charge Noted Glories, my guess is because it became too easy for people to stock up on hundreds of Glory Amulets, take them all to the Hero's Guild, charge them all, then go back and Runecraft through the abyss for hours upon hours straight. I'm guessing they changed it to make people have to slow down on Runecrafting and not cause the prices of Glory Amulets to skyrocket because of how useful they could be in large numbers.

This being said, my point kind of throws off the argument of "realism" but with how Runescape works, how do we know there isn't some kind of "Abyssal Bank" of sorts that, when you cast High Alchemy or Low Alchemy, actually causes a teleport spell to activate to send the note to them, and they'll teleport back the correct amount of money? For those of us with Lunar Magic and the Contact NPC spell, we've already seen that there is a sort of "Lunar Switchboard" or something with the Random NPC contact spell. And teleportation already has a Lost and Found office, indicating the presence of some sort of person/people who are directing you to the appropriate spot...

I'm thinking this out too much...

First of all, thanks everyone for the criticism.

I understand the reasoning to changing the way you dip glories, from being able to dip noted, to not.

[bleep]egamer, the thing is, the item on the paper is still worth that much, much like a cheque is worth the number you write on it. The only problem is, if you were to "alch" a cheque, you wouldn't get 1mil (otherwise I would have alched a couple of those already), you would get:

1 cheque = $20 for pack of cheques/50 cheques in a package = 0.40 cents per cheque

The paper is worth nothing, but what is written on the paper is worth X. Therefore, you trade the note to the store, the store takes the note to the bank, the bank takes the item from your account and gives it to the store. Like I said, the game just skips some steps to make it easier, so noted items don't sit in your account, to avoid scams of selling noted items multiple times before someone can trade in the note and remove the item from your bank.

Sinless_Hero, as much of a hassle as this would be to those alching thousands of items, I think it would greatly reduce the number of "autoalchers" out there. I see them all the time, standing by the bank teller, little lights flashing every second or two. Now it may be someone sitting at their comp, clicking over and over, but I would wager a guess, that alot of them are afk alching, using some kind of autoer program.

micbar, are you saying that if you have noted items in your possesion, and get killed, you will keep the noted items, and loose other stuff, that is worth more than the noted items? Ex: if you have a noted bronze dagger, you would keep the noted dagger, but loose your rune plate body?

darkblade986, that is a reasonable thought. A little strange to me, but a good answer to the question...

Ps, I am from Canada, and that's how we spell cheque (check) (as in a way of paying money), just in case you're wondering what the word means :D

Noted items have been around since RSC (cept they were certs back then).

JAgex can't remove this now, noted glories was only recent so could be changed.

This isn't about removing noted items. This is about not being able to alch noted items. Of course they can't remove notes.

And as far as alching goes, you could alch noted items for their worth.

if you really want to get into it you must establish where items go after they are alched, they clearly dont dissappear they go to the gods, who then use their HSBC account to get the items...durr

Maybe Jagex dosen't want it to be too inconvenient for players. Imagine having to alch, bank, alch, bank, alch, bank... You'd get sick of it too. And what happens to those who have millions of yew longs ready and set for 99 magic?

Like I said in my very first post, I know the hassle, as I have done it for a long time with steel plates. It would be a little inconvenient for those players alching millions of yew longs as you suggested, but them's the breaks. As I said earlier also, it would help prevent (or at least slow) "auto alching".

Still wouldn't be that hard, alch steel plates in bank, after you've done an an inv, quickly bank then repeat.

When you alch a "Note" (let's say it's a Yew Longbow) the bank would find out immediately and alch the longbow themselves that's being stored in the bank then give you the gp they get... That sounded really dumb... maybe Jagex could change it to make more sense...

You alch the bow, but you don't get the money. Then the next time you go to the bank, if you talk to the banker there's an option that says "I'd like to claim my money please" and then they give you all the money you got from alching or something :P

The simple answer is...

IT'S MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe this is actually a topic.

give F2P a penny and they want a dime; give P2P a quarter, they want 100,000 dollars, your car, house, boat, social security number, credit card numbers, drivers license, clothes on your back and everything you ever owned or interacted with ever

I still don't understand these replies... Did you NOT read the entire 17 other messages in this thread??? Yes, we all know it is MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you are using MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the piece of paper, not the item. Is it such a hard concept to grasp? Maybe next time, give a reason for saying it's MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, rather than just getting your post count up?

Actually yes I did read every other post and nobody explicitly said "it's magic".

Look, you can't even begin to understand the way magic works so you shouldn't even try. You could say "the rules that govern magic allow it to know the worth of what is written on the piece of paper".

Magic isn't a real thing, you shouldn't try to use real rules to explain it.

Dude, who cares. It's a game. I don't think a company like Jagex will let us down just by a complaint by a non-member who can't High-Alch, (Like they haven't let us down yet, though...). So, we would stay in banks for hours, clicking on 'Withdraw All".
