Global Warming topic

I heard on the radio today that there was a climate study done by extracting mud from a lake in western Canada. The evidence shows that approximately every 200 years the sun goes through a weak period resulting in cooler temperatures here on Earth. You know what this means don't you? All of us not car pooling and driving hummers aren't contributing to global warming. We're fighting global cooling. You can thank me later.

EDIT: Just for reference here is a link to a news release talking about it: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1854952/posts

NO! Global warming is the source of all our problems! How dare you say otherwise.

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

I think your sarcasm detector is broken. :(

Honestly, Global Warming has been seriously exaggerated.

According to this article, the science indicates that the global temperature is directly linked to the brightness (thus the energy output) of the sun. It's a fairly convincing article and well worth the read.

Oh - as a side note: according to this paper, we should be heading into a global cooling trend beginning in 2010.

My personal opinion is that no one knows exactly what is going on. Anyone that tells me they know conclusively one way or another what is happening in the topic of global warming is full of it. There is still a ton of work to be done in the scientific study of weather and environment.

Interesting article, thanks for that. It's pretty clear that there's still a lot we don't know about climate. It's a pretty huge thing to try and break down and explain because it changes so much. Regardless, sustainability should be our focus because it's a known that not trying to clean up our act and find as many alternative energy sources as possible is going to leave us stuck in this fossil fuel rut which could ultimately be our downfall as a culture.

I'm a bit confused on 1 question on global warming, and please correct me if i'm wrong.

But technically both Global Warming and Global Cooling are taking place.

We are basically messing up the O-Zone Layer, so when its daytime, the earth will get hotter than normal.

When its night time, because there is no heat comming in, the earth will get much cooler than normal.

So overall, 1 side of the earth is getting fried while the other is getting frozen to death.

Global warming is going to kill us all (unless the robots get to us XD lol) but seriously there is no bigger problem than global warming at this moment

Al gore made a documentary on it ide watch it if you have time its called "an inconvenient truth"

Al Gore did a study of 2,000 random scientific papers and 2,000 media articles. The aim of this study was to who believed what. The results...

Scientific papers : 2,000/2,000 scientist all concluded that global warming was a reality to lesser or greater extents.

Media articles : 53% claimed global warming was false, while only 47% claim it to be true.

So who do we believe? The media who spin you whatever way they feel and whatever will sell their papers? The media who can be paid to say absolutely anything at all.

or

The scientists who spend their entire professional careers investigating this sort of thing?

Hmmm, hard one.... not

This sadly, is likely just another case of media spin, either deliberately misleading in an attention seeking stunt, or an accidental misreading of actual facts.

I'd tend to agree with you. I've not seen many of the figures for myself but I'll always go with the scientific consensus.

I've yet to see an unbiased media report on this either way, so i'm not really sure where to stand.

Even if it is all a myth though, I think cutting carbon emmissions is probably just good sense anyway though, so I wouldn't worry too much about it even if it's false.

I also wonder, even if 2000 scientific papers did conclude that global warming is a fact (which it is), I wonder how many concluded it was our fault?

Wow, I posted this study as a joke and to point out that global climate is just so complex that there is no way we could possibly predict what will happen unless we had about a million more years of climate data. I agree that cutting carbon emissions (especially CFC's) is a good idea, but people like Al Gore with his "An Inconvenient Truth" piss me off. Just about ever scientist you will find believes in global warming. Without it we would never have gotten out of any of the ice ages. But to say that we are causing massive global warming that will result in the complete destructing of the polar ice caps and flood a third of out land mass is just moronic. There was even one period in time in which global average temperature rose about 6̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâúC in a decade. That 100 times faster than the rate today. And look outside, the world is still here and we are still alive. Big surprise. The Earth has away of balancing itself out. Admittedly we are screwing up with all of our emissions, but to make all of the changes that the environmentalists want would cost approximately $300 billion in the United States alone. I'm all for using compact flourescent bulbs rather than incandescent, but not all of us can afford to own a car run on old fry oil from McDonalds. All I wanted to say is that many of the offered solutions are impractical to the average person today.

Yea, the Earth can balance itself out, and it probably has. But, because of everything we're doing do harm the environment, we've greatly thrown it out of balance so it might take thousands of years for it to 'fix' itself. By then, we will have killed ourselves... You say that saying we're causing global warming and it'll cause melting ice caps and our land flooding is moronic. Why? Because it's true? The ice caps are melting, and if they melt enough, tons of our land will be flooded. Many polar bears are actually DROWNING because they can't find ice to rest on. A semi aquatic mammal is drowning. Ah... money... It always comes back to this. This article says that the Iraq war is costing $100,000 a minute. (think it's a little high? go here and time it, it'll work out to almost $200,000 a minute) If we withdrew from Iraq, in 3,000 minutes, 50 hours, a little over 2 days we would have enough money for this. How's that for perspective?

Global warming has been described as the biggest problem facing our future on several occasions by the likes of leading politicians, yes, including George Bush. However, some people are too stubborn or love a conspiracy too much to believe that global warming is directly linked to us.

So, now it's away with the pro-natural views and time to shed some light on the commonly agreed truth: Humans are the cause of global warming..

Sure, you could move onto another post at this stage because of your reluctance to believe, but I severely recommend that you persevere the length of the post and gain knowledge of the truth.

Lets start with what the scientists think: At a climate science conference in 2005, all 912 attendees agreed that global warming was being caused by human activity; burning fossil fuels.

Are you a scientist? Would you like to conduct an experiment to disprove the theory of manmade global warming? I encourage you to go ahead. But you may be wasting your time...

Look at the following graph:

280px-2000_Year_Temperature_Comparison.png

If you haven't already figured it out, it shows the unexplained error in temperature from the analysis of atmosphere now and in the past. The different coloured lines represent different sources/results. We can clearly see that at the end towards the present day, there is a massive anomaly of results. Here's our first point.

Secondly, observe the following graph:

280px-Mauna_Loa_Carbon_Dioxide.png

It shows the average carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere in parts per million (ppm). Currently this stands at 383 ppm. Forty years ago it was 320 ppm. A 16% increase in 40 years. Lets zoom out a little:

280px-Carbon_Dioxide_400kyr-2.png

Now we can see that at no point in the last 400,000 years has carbon dioxide been at such a high concentration, the lowest being some 180 ppm. Here's our second point.

Now we can determine a general trend. As carbon dioxide levels rise, so do

Now time to disprove some other theories...

"It's the suns fault!"

280px-Solar-cycle-data.png

Solar variation hasn't changed in the last few decades, but average Antarctic ice thickness has generally gone down:

280px-Glacier_Mass_Balance.png

"It's a conspiracy!"

Yes, so was your parents lying to you about the tooth fairy. This is a little more serious now my dear.

...and some attitudes...

"I don't care!"

If you don't care then you can be described in two words: Ignorant and Inconsiderate. If you watched the news from Europe on September 11th 2001, did you think "I don't care LOLSeRs!!!!"? You'll care when you see others suffering on the television.

"I'll be dead before then"

That's not possible because as you read this, it's happening. Not the worst part yet, that's for sure.

"When I see it, I'll believe it."

What if you already have seen it? Flooding? Hurricanes? Perhaps not all global warming's fault, but almost certainly enhanced by it.

Ok then, lets dumb it down a little...

Global warming => Too much evidence supporting the theory.

Still not believe it? In that case, there's not much I can do to change your mind. Believe what you want, but for the rest of us...

My god, it's called seasons

We meet again, i see.

This time, however, I'm partially agreeing with you. The melting of the ice caps etc is due to different seasons. But we are changing these seasons, bit by bit.

For example, the Arctic. It melts in spring. However, I melts ealier than normal. Why? Global warming. The warming also affects the freezing. Now, much less ice is frozen every year. Causing the gradual decrease in ice amounts.

How do I know this. Saving planet Earth was just on. David Attenbourough (sp?) told us about it on the show. They are getting scientifically proven facts showing what I've just said. Unless your a scientist. You are not smart enougth to oppose them.

I don't need science to prove my point. The only comeback I can think of is the earth has been changing how it's functioned for as long as the earth has been here. For example, last year, in my state, it snowed on Thanksgiving and lasted through march. Though this year in my state we've only had one snowfall, and it was a city covered in ice*. So the world is constantly changing. We know that.

*Awesome, it rained like crazy, then it froze, so imagine about 4 feet of ice covering every part of town, outside break at school was awesome, ice skating at school without skates. Our school has a big field, and a big hill that goes down into another. Awesome sledding!

idk..... the last few winters there have been record lows in snow fall

so i think its real

I WANT MY WINTER BACK!!!!

Well you live in Canada so you may know what I'm talking about, but this is what happened in America. Common places like North America and Central America, more along the east coast didn't receive snowfall. HOWEVER, places that have never received a snowfall before have gotten snow. Malibu and North Texas got loads of snow.

The climate just adjusts and changes all the time, it's totally natural.
