Planning my new rig...

____

Recommended Posts

- Asus M2N32-SLi Deluxe ($252.00)

- AMD Athlon̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¾Ãââ 64 6400+ AM2 ($339.00)

- ASUS Arctic Square Fan & H/S ($75.00)

- ASUS EN8600GTSLN 512MB ($268.00)

- DDR2 Corsair (4x1GB) ($399.00)

- 2x Seagate SATAII NCQ 500GB ($177.00)

- Antec P182 ($195.00)

$1882.00

Right now I am stuck on a power supply - I do have an Antec Phantom... 500W or so, but I'm wondering if I should get another with a bit more juice.

Either way I need to get a new one - either for the new build, or for my current PC if I leech the Phantom for the new system :-k

I don't really have a budget - but I'd prefer to keep it under $2,000 - and before anyone says anything: yes 4GB ram and 1TB of hdd is required for what I do. Any other suggestions?

I may have overlooked some compatability but it's a quick throw down of what I'm aiming at.

Is there a reason for choosing a SLi board? If you're not gaming on it, selecting yourself a non-SLi board would save you a little of those precious dollars.

Apart from that, pretty solid choices as I'd expect from you... :P

Only thing I can suggest is maybe going for a Core 2 Duo instead of the AM2 AMD. Encoding videos in particular benefits from using the Intel chip.

Might wanna have a look at some AM2 Vs Core2Duo reviews to get an idea of similar speed processors though.

Only other improvement I can mention would be to get 2 1TB hardrives and RAID them. Probably put you way over budget though.

I'd say a true 500W PSU should be enough for a system like that. The only time you really need more juice than 500W is if you use a second graphics card.

Oh, I'll be gaming on it. There's a reason I went with a SLi board and DX10 card ;)

600W in SLi mode then.

750W if you want to make sure... Although in my opinion it's WAAAAAY overkill.

If you're gaming on it you might wanna look into getting a 10K raptor drive? Again, grossly overpriced.

price-speed trade off isn't worth it for a raptor. i've gamed on raptors before and struggle to notice a difference.

and 600w psu you say... m'kay.. easy enough. just gotta find one which doesn't sound like a jet engine (hence my love of the phantom :P).

For the same money (ok about $50 more) you can get;

Q6600 (Quad Core)

4 gb DDr2 (800) ram

A 8800GTS 640mb

Asus SLI mobo

The same case

2 better 500gb hard drives (Western Digital)

Which will perform a lot better.

If you give be 1 hour I'll make you a full build for $2000.

But as it stands just look up the parts on that site.

Your going with a single core? There is no reason to go with one now a days. All current games support dual core and new games coming out fully support them and most are going to support quad.

Awesome case choice. I have the same exact one :) . If you have any questions about it, just ask. One tip, use the cable management that the case is designed for, it makes the airflow a lot better. You want to buy an extra 120mm fan for intake because it does not come with one.

If your dead set on going the AMD route, I would check into the new chips they are releasing (the phenom I believe). They are going to be available in all varieties, single, dual, and quad core.

The AMD dual cores aren't near as powerful though. (I know you're just pointing out it is a dual core, just adding in here).

Go with Joe's suggestions, that'd be a beast of a rig.

I agree with nadril. If you look at any hardware review sites, all of them will say the intel core 2's stomp on all of AMD's offerings. Plus, with quad cores getting so cheap now, a q6600 is the best processor out there, both in price/performance and pure performance. an overclocked one is the fastest thing out there. If you need to read some comparison charts on the processors, go to Toms hardware

Oops :wall: . I'm use to just seeing the X2 on the AMD processors and not them actually saying "dual core"

Anyway, Joe these prices are in Australian dollars and not American, you can not compare the two.

from the website you listed: Here is the core 2 quad, which is much faster then the one you listed, at only 5 dollars more.

Ok,

Here my list (soz about it being a day late, I got held up)

2 of these DDR2 (800) 2 x 1gb - $155 each ($310 Total)

Same case as you choose - $195

western Digital 500gb Hard drives -$155 each ($310 total)

Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) - $349.99

Foxconn 8800GTS 640mb - $499.99

ASUS PBN-SLI Plus Board-$279.99

Totals at $1942.00

It will perform a hell of a lot better then the rig you put together (mainly due to the 8800GTS).

I would reccommend droping 2gb of ram and adding this power supply (Corsair HX-620) as your old power supply may struggle.

To save a little cash you can replace the 8800GTS with the 320mb version (it performs worse at high resolutions but still a lot better then the 8600GT) which will save you about $100 or so. Also you may want to think about getting 2gb of ram as XP and some versions of vista don't support 4gb of ram (XP's limit is 3gb, not sure on Vista's)

Note you will have to buy a OS and some Optical drives if you don't already have them.

That's a nice list Joe - cheers.

And good catch with the PSU, missed that one.

OS, optical drives, etc - all covered. My current box is being converted into a file server when I get the new rig setup, so it's just a matter of sorting out the new setup :)

So... I dunno how it happened, I was testing my memory for errors again and all I was going was switching ram... hit the power switch, got a POP followed by that nasty smell of burning electrical and plastic.

Fried mobo ftl yea :(
