You ought to add the effects of picking up your

arrows to the guide and to the ranging calculator.

The master equation is

ArrowsNeeded*MaxHit*2 = ExpNeeded*(1-p)

where p is the portion of arrows that you pick up, typically 0.75

and MaxHit is the max hit that you can do for the arrow that you are using and your range level.

This post explained it all...

idunedain: Yes, I know what you are talking about and I found that post very interesting. I would love to add this kind of information to the guide, but I cannot do so until we get values for p. This parameter depends on the arrows you use (rune arrows have a smaller chance to dissapear than bronze ones). A study should be done to determine p's values for arrows and then we'll put this formula on the site.

Yes, I know what you are talking about and I found that post very interesting.

I would love to add this kind of information to the guide, but I cannot do so until we get values for p.

How dissapointing.

IMHO, that's not really a sufficient reason to not update the calculator.

Especially since the Tip It Range guide says

... approximately four fifths of arrows fired are recovarable...

So Tip It is already suggesting a p value of 0.80

My main point here is that there is nothing to guide RS

rangers in the estimation of arrow consumption.

That's in spite of the fact that it's a very simple calculation.

This parameter depends on the arrows you use (rune arrows have a smaller chance to dissapear than bronze ones).

A study should be done to determine p's values for arrows and then we'll put this formula on the site.

Is anyone at Tip It gonna bother organizing this effort?

I think that the best possible outfit for range should be added, so here it is:

1. Robin Hood Hat. Gives +8 range attack and defense. No Requirements

2. Rangers Boots. Give +8 range attack and defense. No Requirements

3. Black D-Hide Body or Karils Body. Both give the same range attack bonus. 70 range and 40 defense for black d hide body, 70 range and 70 defense for Karils body.

4. Black D-Hide Chaps or Karils Skirt. Both give the same range attack bonus. 70 range for black d hide chaps, 70 range and 70 defense for karils skirt.

5. Barrows Gloves. Give +6 Range attack and defense. Require 175 QP and have finished Recipe for Disaster.

6. Fire Cape. Gives +1 Range attack and +11 range defense. No requirements.

7. Archer Ring. Gives +4 Range attack and defense. No requirements.

8. Amulet of Fury. Gives +10 range attack and +15 range defense. No requirements.

9. Crystal Bow. When full, it gives +100 range attack bonus. It uses no arrows and is cheaper than Karils crossbow. Requires 70 Range and 50 agility

There is nothing in the guide about broad arrows.

The damage of these lies between mith and addy arrows.

The quantities available are 50k in 5 shops/slayermasters.

I can hit 18 with broad arrows (only 1 time) and I hit 18s often with addy arrows.

For the lazy but rich buyer, these are easy to get hold of.

Prize is from 60 ea till 100 ea for the first 500 in the shop.

Crystal bows need a warning:

for the rangers take care, you are over 70 range but have low defence and maybe "only" 60 or 70 hits.

This bow is different from normal bows with sometimes a disastrous effect.

When a normal bow runs out of arrows, you just stand there and get the message: your quiver is empty, even when you target the monster again, you will not run up to it.

When a crystal bow is empty your character runs up to the high level monster and starts hitting the monster with the uncharged crystal seed. Especially black drags are kinda unforgiving when you hit them on the tender portion of their nose with a crystal seed and tend to blow high level damage on the little pest (the ranger) that was bothering them from a "safe" distance. As you were ranging with a bow, you have no protection from an anti dragon fire shield.

There is a player made guide about safe spots and "center" of a creature were it drops.

It states that a big creatures' base square is in the south west.

Maybe this seems that i am rambling, but because chinchompas work with fuses it is important that you read that guide to understand the differences.

I was doing Iron drags with red chinchompas and they hit 12 max...

Then someone took the dragon next to me and pushed me more towards the middle.

The next dragon was to my north, and i hit 16!...

While I was sending this to some of my online friends I was hitting 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 and finally 24. (99 range and potted).

So when attacking big creatures you have to set the fuse keeping in mind their center is in the south west corner.

So a short fuse 1 step away towards the south up to 24 damage...

And a short fuse 1 step away towards the north only up to 12 damage...

The difference is big. Ranging metal drags with them is quite fast.

Now try daganoths in multi combat...it is faster than cannon, hitting up to 9 dagas at the same time...up to 24 damage...could be up to 216 damage with range in 1 shot...

sjefderat, what corner/square should we be on, or are you just saying set your chinchompa at the southwest square the monster is on?]

hmm... I noticed one helpful ranging item was completely left out of both the ranging guide and the items database... the bolt pouch, to be specific.

once you have access to keldagrim, the bolt pouch can be purchased from the crossbow salesman near the dock for 1500gp. it allows you to place up to 255 of any type of bolt except the new kebbit and long kebbit bolts into the pouch, but can only carry 4 different types at one time. it also shows the type of ammo you have currently equipped.

I would put a picture in, but all I have is ms pait, and its not working properly... :?

EDIT: spelling corrections

EDIT 2: oops, left a line out hehe.

[pokemama 1/2: one of our crewbies swears by his bolt pouch and has confirmed the kebbit bolts don't go into it. The crossbow salesman on the east side of the consortium is indeed the only place to buy it. Will try to get into the update currently in the works.]

you suggest the fire cape to wear because it gives +1 ranged attack bonus and 11 ranged def bonus but the new ava accumelator (hope i spelled it correct) gives a range attack bonus of +4 though it gives only +4 ranged def but i prefer more attack power then def

How does potions and prayer change this formula?

OK Heres a HUGE tip to for tip.it

Dont simply round the max hit answer.

IF you do 18.32097 damage, show 18.3, that helps explain how close you are to 19. IT helps immensley because people arent deafly looking for their next max hit.

I built my own max hit calcs, their is another HUGE HUGE tip.

Display several damage type's at once, for example...

74 strength and 99 strength bonous do

21.2 Natural

25.3 super potted

24.3 with +15% prayer

28.3 max

That way it is far more aesthetically pleasing, and also avoids constantly flipping back and forth. Instead of checking how much you do potted, then how much you do max, and then adjusting your str lvl and re doing the entire process.

I dont share any calculators i make. at this point i dont even have a range max hit.

Yeah, guess the distance toward the south west corner of the large creature that you are hunting to set your fuse.

Of course if you hunt daganoths in multi combat zone, you also have to aim at the best one and/or move around to get maximum damage.

Example: short fuse is the place you stand upon, 1 empty spot, then south west corner of large monster that you want to kill so obviously you will have to stand 1 step to the south or to the west of the monster.

Or in multi combat: aim at monster in second row from you...

If really necessary I will make a drawing and go through all the crazy stuff that this website requires to get a picture on it.

One thing about the part of the guide where you suggest the training spot. there is a barn type thing in edgeville with lots of Man's...sound wierd. they could be ranged from lvl 10-30 due to the fact that there really isn't any safespots, so you might need a little bit of ranged xp before killing them. for pro's is that there are lots of spawns, and their qiuck too, and you get your arrows back. for cons there are lots of people there melleing

If you go up to the top of the southeastern ladder on the second floor in varrock castle you'll get to what used to be a cool place to train range, especially in P2p since there was considerably less people there. However with the recent Varrock graphic makeover they made the guards there un-attackable. Instead they now train on the dummies located there. This is kinda sad for me since I got 60 range there. :( The Ranged guide should probably be updated since this was a pretty popular spot back in the day, both for clueing and training range.

Magic Longbow and Magic Composite Bow special says this:

An accurate shot that will definitely inflict damage.

This isn't true.

You will have a higher chance to hit, but not a 100% chance.

More like 95%.

Had this a few times while killing the Giant Mole, some Specials hit a '0'.

So it won't definitly hit, but has a higher chance of hitting.

TIF mod LordBaer advises that the Mithril grapple *DOES* work with the Hunter crossbow. This has some far-reaching implications to other guides, namely Agility as well as the items db.
