Jagex Catering to 10 Year Olds?

As you all know and are furious about the Dec. 10th update, it leaves many thinking of why Jagex is doing this.

Although it IS ideally to deal with RWT's, it also has to do with the game audience.

Face it: Most of the players are below 13 years of age. These players have their mothers/fathers behind them to pay for membership, etc. With membership is more freedom, like Dueling and a higher risk in PKing. Many of these children are naive and gullible, and are often lured/cheated in a duel/ignorant enough to bring all items into the wilderness/scammed in an item trade.

Despite the attack towards RWT's, these facets of RS have been covered with a barrier protecting younger players from getting cheated in trades/PvP, etc.

Yes, random, but discuss.

Is Jagex aiming for a significantly lower age group?

They did the RWT update because they had to prove to the credit card companies that it was impossible for RWTs to profit in the game, or else they would lose the business of the credit card companies. That would deal a lethal blow to RS. They are working on tweaking stuff right now...

But yes, I don't see what the point of the tombstone update was. It made it so that if you train with a friend, it's extremely easy to get your stuff back.

It makes no sense - Jagex still doesn't let you create an account if you claim to be under 13! So what the heck are they playing at?

I'm guessing this is a legal issue about child data privacy laws. I haven't tried writing to Jagex to tell them I'm 12 and see what they do (because I'm not 12, among other reasons) but I'd be interested to know if they're forced to disable the accounts of people who claim they're younger.

That said, it'd not be the end of the world if they did let younger people in. They'd practically have a monopoly on the MMORPGs-for-kids market [*], and many kids online show more maturity than some of the players I've seen posting in the last couple of days.

[*] There's a lot of people don't like what Jagex just did to the game, but I'm sure we'd get better updates out of a well-funded Jagex than out of a Jagex that's in financial troubles and needing to cut costs. So most things that benefit Jagex indirectly benefit us.

I hate to tell you this, but in games not specifically designed for children (5+/7+ rated games) the average age is always lower than the age rating.

13+ --> 12

15+ --> 14

18+ --> 16

This is the way it has always been, and always will be.

Goals to get my skills back up to a barely respectable level on the high scores:

Currently going for Bone to Peaches spell. It's amazing how boring doing the same repetitive task is! Stupid MTA

Well they made the game much easier, and got rid of the majority of personal responsibility a person has over their character.

more like 6 year olds if you ask me.

The game used to be about risk.

If you mean the game where you could pk everywhere. BEFORE the wilderness.

You want risk ? Go to bounty hunter, you'll see what I mean when you meet the 9 other ppl in the same place all shouting ur name .
