Nice choice :D

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Your going to want to buy a video card, the one that comes with is junk.

Also, when you buy from places like Dell or Gateway, they install a bunch of crap on your computer... So I suggest you contact them and ask them for your OS CD (your windows XP Home Edition CD)

Then reformat, the only thing vital that I think YOU would lose is... your microsoft office junk, which can easilly be obtained by means of... oh yea we can't say that on this forum, but I think you get the idea?

Now, this is going to be harsh, but it's my honest opinion. Don't take it personal ;).

Dell Dimension 4700 Series Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Pentium̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî 4 Processor 520 w/HT Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB)

This processor is old. Getting at least a 3 or maybe a 3.2Ghz would be recommended

Memory 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512)

Very nice :)

Keyboard Dell Quietkey̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Keyboard

I'm guessing getting a 'normal' keyboard (or keeping the old one, which you probably still have?) would have been cheaper, and not less functional

Monitor 17 inch E773 (16 inch viewable) Conventional CRT

Same here - haven't you still got your old monitor? If not, you might have been able to get a TFT - though those are usually more expensive than CRT's

Video Cards Integrated Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Graphics Media Accelerator 900

Zonda was spot on. This graphics card sucks. Badly.

Hard Drive FREE UPGRADE! 80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

80GB = small, nowadays. I'd have expected at least a 120, if not a 160GB disk

Floppy Drive and Additional Storage Devices No Floppy Drive Included

A floppy drive is like... 5 bucks, and it's still useful. I still can't fathom why computer makers are so happy to keep them out...

Operating System Microsoft̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Windows̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî XP Home Edition

Nothing to be said here...

Mouse Dell 2-button scroll mouse

You haven't still got a mouse? If not, you may have wanted to pay 5 bucks more and get an optical mouse. Saves you cleaning it every other day

Network Interface Integrated Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî PRO 10/100 Ethernet

Nothing really to be said here - a Gigabyte ethernet isn't worth it if it's not integrated, imho

Modem 56K PCI Data Fax Modem

Sure.

Adobe Software Adobe̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Acrobat̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Reader 6.0

Okay, this is where the fun begins. This software is outdated, but also free, so getting it with the pc won't make any difference...

CD or DVD Drive Single Drive: 16X DVD-ROM Drive

Right, that's cool

Sound Card Integrated 5.1 Channel Audio

Decent enough

Speakers No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system)

I take it you have headphones / speakers yourself?

Office Productivity Software (Pre-Installed) No Productivity Suite - Corel WordPerfect̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî word processor only

Corel? Either get MS Office or OpenOffice.org, whichever suits you best. I didn't even know WordPerfect was still alive...

Security Software No Security Subscription

...

If you come in here anywhere in the next month complaining about viruses / spyware, I'll be saying 'told you so'. Please make sure you have an antivirus, firewall and antispyware program. They save your butt when things go wrong.

Digital Music Dell Jukebox - easy-to-use music player and CD burning software

I do hope you didn't pay for this... And what do you need CD burning software for if you haven't got a burner?

Digital Photography Photo Album̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¾Ãââ SE Basic

See note above - heck, have you even got a digital camera?

Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options 2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support

What, you bought that too? Dell needed an ego boost, I guess

Financial Software No QuickBooks package selected- Includes limited use trial

Uhh, right.

So, if you want a better gaming experience and want to stop needing us to get your comp clean:

1. Get a better video card.

2. Get a better processor.

3. (do this anyway, for the love of monkeys...) Get yourself an antivirus program, a firewall and an antispyware program such as Ad-Aware SE

4. Get a bigger HDD

5. Tell Dell to keep all their free trials, or chuck them in the bin where they belong

I have a 1.8Ghz Processor, certainly not the best in the world but it can easilly handle games like HL2 and DOOM3. My friends both have 3.2 Ghz processors and you cseriously can't notice a difference in load times

Memory 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512)

Very nice :)

Yup, I only have 512 MB, and this works fine too (although I want to buy another 512 stick)

Keyboard Dell Quietkey̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Keyboard

I'm guessing getting a 'normal' keyboard (or keeping the old one, which you probably still have?) would have been cheaper, and not less functional

Agreed

Monitor 17 inch E773 (16 inch viewable) Conventional CRT

Same here - haven't you still got your old monitor? If not, you might have been able to get a TFT - though those are usually more expensive than CRT's

Agreed

Zonda was spot on. This graphics card sucks. Badly.

Thanks

Hard Drive FREE UPGRADE! 80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

80GB = small, nowadays. I'd have expected at least a 120, if not a 160GB disk

I have had the same 40 GB hard drive for... it has to be going on 5 years now and it works just fine for gaming. Halo, Hl, HL2, DOD, DOOM 3, CS, Descent 1 through 3, Diablo II, LOD, TFC, Quake series, SC and SC:BW, HL:DM, The specialists, not to mention almost 20 hours of frag movies, photoshop, image ready, dreamweaver... ect. And yet I ALWAYS have between 4 and 7 Gig's free. Would I like more? Actually I thought of buying another 80 gig to act as a slave, but my point is that 80 will be enough. (oh, I forgot farcry)

Floppy Drive and Additional Storage Devices No Floppy Drive Included

A floppy drive is like... 5 bucks, and it's still useful. I still can't fathom why computer makers are so happy to keep them out...

Agreed

Operating System Microsoft̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Windows̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî XP Home Edition

Nothing to be said here...

I would rather have pro, but that is all about preference

Mouse Dell 2-button scroll mouse

You haven't still got a mouse? If not, you may have wanted to pay 5 bucks more and get an optical mouse. Saves you cleaning it every other day

If your buying the computer for "gaming" your not going to want the POS mouse they give you, check out the Logitech MX 1000 (considered to be the best gaming mouse out there ATM)

Network Interface Integrated Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî PRO 10/100 Ethernet

Nothing really to be said here - a Gigabyte ethernet isn't worth it if it's not integrated, imho

Huh?

Modem 56K PCI Data Fax Modem

Sure.

Lol

Adobe Software Adobe̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Acrobat̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Reader 6.0

Okay, this is where the fun begins. This software is outdated, but also free, so getting it with the pc won't make any difference...

Yup, can be downloaded or it gets installed with alot of programs now adays (usually ones with manuels or readme's writting in .pdf)

CD or DVD Drive Single Drive: 16X DVD-ROM Drive

Right, that's cool

Yea, nothing to brag about but nice none the less

Sound Card Integrated 5.1 Channel Audio

Decent enough

I think they are fairly good too

Speakers No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system)

I take it you have headphones / speakers yourself?

I would hope so, same with the keyboard and mouse ordeal. Anyways, if you ARE doing this for gaming forget buying superduper speakers with surround sound and subwoffers for $120... because in all honesty a $15 headset is WAY better then ANY speaker setup you can get

Not only that, but you can get much better for free (read the stickies)

Security Software No Security Subscription

...

If you come in here anywhere in the next month complaining about viruses / spyware, I'll be saying 'told you so'. Please make sure you have an antivirus, firewall and antispyware program. They save your butt when things go wrong.

I suggest either McAffe or Norton, both can be baught at your local computer store, or hell, even walmart or something. I prefere mcaffe, but what you chose it all based on preference

Digital Music Dell Jukebox - easy-to-use music player and CD burning software

I do hope you didn't pay for this... And what do you need CD burning software for if you haven't got a burner?

sounds lame, take more of your harddrive away with useless junk please??

You must be kidding me... For 850 USD, that's all you can get?

And Dell's are useless, not only do you NOT get a graphics card, they just suck.

And I don't get why people are nitpicking, it's a package. You don't get to choose, unless you want a whole different package.

Here's where you should BUILD, if you can't build one your self, it's still cheaper to get someone to build it for you.

For 600 USD(I'm in Singapore, so that converts to $994) I got an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum\Amd Athlon 64 3000+ package, and another 45 USD was spent on a Radeon 9550(Temp card, until my GCE's are over ,I'm upgrading to probably a 6800 Ultra or something of that sort).

I used my old 1024 MB DDR-333 RAM and my 2 Seagate HDDs. But that shouldn't cost you more than 200 USD. So all in all, it's still better to build one yourself.

Known formerly as Ameoba3000.

Now known as Vigoss.

That's bull. Dell and just about all the other main sellers out there let you pick components. Try it yourself - it may be more expensive than getting stuff yourself, but you can definitely customize whatever Dell comes up with. Good thing, too.

He didn't specify if he was getting a set, or something he picked out by himself. Anyway, it's still extremely overpriced for that.

I wouldn't say extremly...

If you are only factoring in the hardware I suppose, but people usually forget to factor in the OS cost, and I think home is 150? (I know pro is 300)

All in all, it is fairly cheap for what you get, you're only paying maybe $100 for them to put it together (but you still get a POS video card)

$100 may sound expensive, but when you look at other computer places selling the same stuff for $300 more...

answer to all your problems, alienware.com

Unless you're on a budget, then it's the answer to none of your problems.

Why are we nitpicking his selection, guys? He just spent $850 on a computer and we're telling him it sucks? How is that supposed to make him feel?

Sounds like a good deal, Shippou, enjoy it!

Zonda is right, though, sometimes major manufacturers put some undesirables on there, so you might want to run ad-aware and/or spybot when you get it. You should also give a glance through the add/remove programs list and remove the ones you're 100% sure you aren't going to use. If you're unsure on some, the Tech & Computers board is always here to help.

Don't be too worried about losing something completely if you uninstall it, though, your PC should come with disks to reinstall most of what comes on it.

Just a warning - you can't replace the motherboard in a Dell machine.

Although, the 4700 has a PCI-E slot, so MAKE SURE YOU BUY A PCI-E CARD AND NOT AN AGP CARD!

I lost a lot of money in shipping by not paying attention to my computer's specs. Learned the hard way.

(Also, try to build your own next time :) )

I would NOT reccomend anyone try it lol. It was hell and took almost 2 weeks of pulling my hair our, searching on forums, flashing all my hardware etc lol. It took a LOT of effort to sort out.

I would never buy a prebuild PC anymore, they just arnt worth it for high end systems.

As for the person who mentioned alienware, rofl. Anyone that buys an alienware pc just got their wallet owned. ^_^

Theres a bit more to getting hacked then just simply stealing some pixels on an rpg game

Anyhow, pretty nice computer. In going for a pre-built computer, I'd say you found quite a good one there. Dell is great, I've had no real issues with them, except for their India customer support

But yea, awesome computer. 1GB Ram, Pentium Processor with HT tech...nearly 3ghz, pretty good.

Personally, atm I'm planning to build myself a computer in the next month or so, rather than upgrading an old one. The reason? Large technological advancements coming out soon...such as Windows64 Bit, the 64 Bit processors are already out, along with Windows Longhorn in the coming year.

A self build system is much cheaper, and I am sure it is not too hard either. You can run into problems, can be a bit of a hassle I suppose, but its well worth it. Much, much cheaper. I can probably build an equal computer to this dell for a decent amount less.

Anyhow, not to discourage you or anything! You got a great deal, great computer, so gl with it, and I hope you have fun
