LuCallbackproxy and svchost

1. Hello. Since I moved into my dorm again, my computer has been acting really funny. The startup is taking 5-10 minutes for one. Worse, is that every 10 minutes or so my computer has a 60 second [bleep]e where my CPU usage goes way up without much reason. I checked my Task Manager, and atleast 6 versions of LUcallbackproxy[Caution: Executable File] were running, and it seems that when those stop, the slowness stopped.

After googling this, I found that LU=LiveUpdate, part of Norton Antivirus. However, further research found that there should only be 1, and it should stop right after start up. So really, I'm not sure this is a Norton problem, or a virus disguised as a part of Norton. People on google said it may be a virus, but I never got any conclusive evidence. I disabled Liveupdate, but it still seems to remain (though it seems less often).

Among my searches for that, mention of scvhost[Caution: Executable File] was in a lot of the same search results. There are also 8 versions of that running. It is a file for Windows, and apparently more than one are supposed to be running but I'm not sure if this is an issue (others have reported CPU usage going to 100% with that many scvhost[Caution: Executable File]'s running.

I guess my question is whether anyone has any experience with this or could suggest something I should do. One site said it may be either a virus, or someone trying to hack but is unable to get fully through. None of these problems happened when I was on my home internet, and when I got to school there were problems getting my connection to work.

2. Barring any results, I'll probably just reformat my computer, as that usually works (unless someone is indeed trying to hack me, in which case I'm not sure what to do). One thing is for sure, I've pretty much had it with Norton products. Can anyone suggest a good, or a couple of good AV programs, either freeware or retail? Perhaps there is a concensus on this?

First off, I would suggest uninstalling Norton completely to see if it actually is the problem. If uninstalling it doesn't fix the issues, then it's time to start running virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode (F8 on boot).

Svchost is a windows process that ends up running multiple services underneath it (such as networking, time, audio, ect) so it's best not to go just killing it off. If it's taking up a lot of CPU usage, it's going to be due to another piece of software that it's running (I had this problem with my dad's media center). You can use Process Explorer to break down what is running underneath svchost and track down the true problem (right click the process you want to look at, properties, threads tab).

And before all the AV fanboys jump in, the most recommended suites to look into will be:

AVG

F-Secure

TrendMirco

Nod32

Panda AV

Avast

I would be looking up any process names inside svchost that are using a lot of CPU. Then you can google the names and track down whether you've found yourself a virus or if you have a malfunctioning piece of legit software.

My case was a driver for the TV tuner in my dad's machine going crazy and deciding to use 50% CPU all the time. We had never used the card so I just renamed the driver and rebooted so it'd no longer load. Can't use the card with the driver removed like that but it was no major loss because its never been used since he bought the machine.

Don't kill off svchost. It'll just cause system instability (and resurrect itself anyway).

Get rid of LUCallBackProxy. Run Spybot in safe mode, then get back with us.

Try Disk Defragmenter?

It helps with starts up for me sometimes.

I download alot :|

I got McAfee SecurityCenter 2008. It's very nice. Takes some time to scan everything but then again I download or install alot so I am to blame.

But I heard AVG is good.

I ran Spybot in Safemode, and it didn't come up with anything meaningful. I ran the Process Explorer again during one of those [bleep]es, and it is indeed LUCallBackProxy, with 7 or 8 of them each taking 3%. They are under running under something called LuComServer_3_2. From what I gather, LUCallBackProxy should run once on startup and a few more times during the day, but I have no idea why its making 7 or 8 of them. Maybe I'll email Symantec, but they will probably give me the standard reply that won't do anything.

I get a few LUCallBackProxy running at once as well but only when Norton is updating. I've ran anti-virus and Hijackthis but there seems to be no problems.

Regarding svchost, a lot of processes use it including Windows updates. Try turning off Windows updates for a while to see if this speeds things up as I know there was a major memory leek in the updater code which used to cause svchost to suck up anything up to 99% of your precious CPU time.

I've had many problems with Norton recently, especially performance wise where it would decide to update itself when I was in the middle of something that needed a lot of system resources, causing the program to crash. Try a different AV if you can, anything Cruiser listed should be a lot better than Norton.

If you want a more temporary solution, you could look here to see if you are running any other unnecessary startup programs/processes.

Cruiser, did you forget Kaspersky in your list or? But this is indeed a very good list of good AVs.

As for the problem, I'm not surprised Norton does that, if it is it.

Wow I thought I had more to add but all that I would've said are already mentionned by other people :^o

Mr_Putter, could you post a HiJackThis log for the rest of us to examine? I don't know but what it might help in seeing if something is loading that shouldn't be. :-k
