Go in to 10 of your local computer stores, ask them the very same things and then compare them all and make a decision.

It will take you a whole day to 2 whole day tops.

If you're really clever you can even ring stores up after you compare the prices and go "well this store here will give me x for x amount of dollars less, will you better the offer etc".

I got a whole heap of extra crap built in to my computer for lower price, a free keyboard and matching mouse, extra ram, price taken off the dvd burner and everything lol

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

Buying a machine at a local store is not only a waste of money, but a lot of the people they hire there don't know [cabbage] about computers.

@ OP:

With a $3000 budget you can get a great machine from newegg.

THIS looks like a pretty decent choice for a laptop if you really want to get one.

However unless you are dead set on a laptop I would personally sugest getting a desktop. For $3000 you can get a top of the line machine.

@OP: I'm going to warn you now, gaming laptops have a good risk of over heating. It's difficult to get sufficent cool air to the fan since it's located under the comper. That being said, DO NOT EVEN THINK OF BUYING AN ALIENWARE LAPTOP. They have so many complaints of over heating laptops it's not even funny. Mine? Crashes daily while I'm playing WoW and it's usually at terrible times.

Like Nadril said, Newegg is a good site. And as he said, you can get a much better machine if you go with the desktop route. Higher end parts, far less chance of overheating, and so much more you can do with it. Imho, the only thing I like about laptops is that I can easily take them with me when I travel.

Newegg is a good place for buying complete computers (for those who don't like building their own or don't have the time), but that specific laptop is horrible for $3K. Would consider another option.

My laptop cost some $1000 and it had nearly all the same specifications except a 160GB HD and a 256MB graphics card.

Don't get a laptop with "Vista Ultimate" like that laptop. You're paying $500 just to get features which aren't even supposed to be used by a gamer/web surfer like you. Go for WinXP or Vista Basic/Premium for gaming, Linux distros are free and great for everything else.

Here are my recommendations.

Firstly, you my friend do not need to pay $3000 on a laptop.

Here in the UK you can get amazing spec laptops for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã600-800, Thats around $1300.

And I completely recommend that you scrap the Windows Vista, and just downgrade to XP, why? Well theres many driver issues with Vista, not to mention games will run slower on Vista than they would on XP.

Just shop around, Look for a good spec, if it comes with Vista, tell them you want a downgrade and you will get the laptop for a cheaper price.

Like another user said in this thread, A laptop isn't really meant for gaming, It can/will heat up, as you are demanding your system to do more. But gaming on a laptop will still work :) (For FPS you will find you need a mouse)

Just make sure you shop around, don't buy at first site :D

Happy shopping

False. Vista's drivers are fine now, and if you are buying a new machine the manufacturer has already made sure you are able to have the correct drivers. Vista is fine now, and I'd recommend it personally.

Gaming laptops are around, it's just that they won't be as powerful as a desktop.

Anyways I do retract what I said about the newegg laptop, it's pretty poor for its price. However I just remembered that dell, to be honest, has pretty good price gaming laptops. Here is one I built:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... WM90&s=dhs

XPS M1730

SYSTEM COLOR Smoke Grey

PROCESSOR Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Core̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¾Ãââ 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî Home Premium Edition - English

MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz

HARD DRIVE Speed: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) Free Fall Sensor

INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE CD / DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW Drive)

VIDEO CARD NVIDIA̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâîGeForce̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî8700M GT graphics

WIRELESS CARDS Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî PRO/Wireless 3945 a/g Mini Card

BATTERY OPTIONS 85 WHr Lithium Ion Battery (9-cell)

SOUND OPTIONS High Definition Audio 2.0

Probably one of the best options you'll get for a gaming laptop, although I'd still recommend a desktop.

What you said there is partially true, because thats drivers for the items already on the laptop (Screen/Sound etc), however Vista is still poor on drivers for other areas, such as Wireless cards and other external devices...

Even if Vista had 100% corrected the problem for drivers, then it still wouldn't work well as a gaming laptop, Games will run better on XP hands down.

And for the record, Vista can't even keep there new DirectX10 games running well on the OS. Halo 2 for instance, came out to be DirectX10. A group of people cracked it to work with DirectX9, so it would run on Windows XP, and what do you know, the game was running 3 times faster.

Vista is a waste of time, Microsoft released it way to early if you ask me...

Any device that has come out after Vista has been released has Vista drivers and works perfectly fine. It may work even better on Vista than XP because the drivers are probably updated more frequently (see Creative X-FI).

Even if Vista had 100% corrected the problem for drivers, then it still wouldn't work well as a gaming laptop, Games will run better on XP hands down.

Incorrect again. Older games that were designed for XP and older operating system may not work with Vista because they were not made for Vista. Any game that comes out now will run perfectly fine on Vista and the game will need Vista for DirectX 10.

And for the record, Vista can't even keep there new DirectX10 games running well on the OS. Halo 2 for instance, came out to be DirectX10. A group of people cracked it to work with DirectX9, so it would run on Windows XP, and what do you know, the game was running 3 times faster.

Halo2 was not a directX 10 game. It only had an operating system check and would not install if you did not have Vista. It is still using directX9.

Vista is a waste of time, Microsoft released it way to early if you ask me...

Well if you ask me, you need to stop reading the bandwagon reviews of Vista and try it yourself.

goldenblade995.png

Hmmmm, For you're information I have Vista installed on 2 of my Computers.... Nice try on trying to win me over with argument...

And yeah, sorry about the Halo 2 + Direct X10 section on my behalf, However Halo 2 did still have support for it, For those running it they would find greater perfomance, apperantly....

Either way the game does still run better on XP than it ever did on Vista :)

Your argument about any device to come out after Vista I find rather baffling... Why should we need to go buy another Wireless card simply because of a new OS??

Windows is Windows, It's not like swapping over to a completely different kernel like Linux or Mac

I have also tested Crysis for game play, and it benchmarked better on a XP than it did with Vista... What happened to your "Any game that comes out now will run perfectly fine on Vista"

And Vista doesn't even seem 100% finished, It is great at finding problems with the installation, and brilliantly poor at finding solutions for them :S

Just because Vista is new doesn't make it a better OS...

Microsoft can't deliver solutions to the many problems people face while using applications such as Firefox. I'm sorry but like, Vista should have got a higher compatibility with software out there before releasing it....

I mean just take a gander at this article...

http://apcmag.com/6649/vista_150_problems_0_solutions

Like I don't want to argue with you here, so lets leave it at the paragraph I shall be posting below...

Vista is sleek and full of neat features, granted, And for many users it runs fine, thats cool. But not everyone has the same experience as you who get it 100% working (and it's not because we are stupid)... Many people already have a set of tools and apps they want to install, they know how to use them and they know they are good, however not everything is going to run smooth on Vista for everyone.

Vista is a double-edged sword. While it may work mighty fine with some functions, It may work might poor with others.

Well no [cabbage] something is going to run faster on XP, it uses less memory. Most of the time the difference is not even noticable though (5-8 fps maybe with a good rig).

You still can't run DX 10 under XP which for a new gaming machine you would want to.

Point in case vista is fine to use now if you're buying a new machine and don't do anything stupid like only put a gig of ram in it.

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.
