kingrunite1
I use AVG and have never had a virus so far (hides from Murphy's Law :XD: ). Personally I can't see the point of leaving lots of software dormant on your hard-drive. If you have a virus, the first thing any real virus does is stop them updating... So all the out of date packages are useless.... Also I think that most viruses out their tend to be older versions, meaning that the virus companies will have the definitions updated. The number of people with the virus prior to the definitions is small. Only major viruses will be an issue here (MyDoom, etc) and at any rate, having another package won't make you safer here. Comparing packages. The thoroughness and speed of the scan are directly related. I know AVG searches inside all sorts of archives because I see it do it. Given that the speed difference between it and NAV is nominal, I assume they all do the same. To be honest, I'd go for NAV if you feel you need to be part of a collective. AVG is in my opinion the best of the free alternatives, but I've not tried many. The best security solution is a good firewall, a competent user (one who doesn't say "I'll just open that random e-mail attachment" - whatever the extension, don't trust stuff from strangers!) and an updated AV system... If you don't visit nefarious sites, don't use Peer-to-Peer, scan weekly and update definitions, you will be fine! Trust me... 7 years... Viruses: 0 PS: Don't believe the scare stories. The internet isn't that dangerous. If you only visit RuneScape, tip.it and banking type sites, you don't even need anti-virus software... I had none for atleast 6 months as a test case. 99 WC, 99FM, 95 Cook, 94 Fish& A Higher FM Exp than N0valyfe:D

We had it on our computers for many years, and each year it got more and more bloated. It is a system hog and get's quite annoying, especially with that ugly 'Norton Brick' sitting in your Taskbar. If you don't visit nefarious sites, don't use Peer-to-Peer, scan weekly and update definitions, you will be fine! Peer-to-Peer is fine if you know what your doing, don't download a full movie if it's 30mb... If in doubt, scan before you open and use common sense and you'll be fine. Seriously, you just open yourself up to giving away your money and credit card details if you don't have Anti Virus and you are using Banking Sites. You should NEVER not have a firewall/antivirus installed. The free ones, like AVG, do fine jobs and you should never be unsecured on the 'Net. I can honestly say I have never had a virus from Limewire or any other P2P programs. Limewire is not a virus, what you download can be. Most of the stuff on Limewire is safe but obviously some isn't. The infected files are usually easy to detect because the size is completely wrong from what it should be. EX: A 4 minute mp3 file that is 300KBs big. Since I've last formatted my computer I have downloaded 1.3 terrabytes of stuff via bittorrent, no viruses. I have no anti virus software, no spyware software, no firewall (except for the default on my router which any self respecting hacker would probably be able to get through in seconds). If you know what you are downloading, you will be OK.

No unknown processes are in my task manager, as well as no unknown programs in my system configuration. No system instability, and no signs of used up resources that shouldn't be. That's good enough for me.I didn't mean to "own" indy500fan, as you say sbrideau2000, I was just asking a question. Even if there are no unknown processes, I think some malware can attack themselves to svchosts. Rootkits might also be a problem since they don't show as processes. *-P.K.M-* Website
