hmmmm....I was talking about bad role models....its like a fight between rap and punk lovers now ....

Actually you were just pulling about every stereotype out of a hat and throwing it into a post. Did you even know how silly you sounded?

Look what todays music industry has done. Now, almost every song has swearing(hip-hop), and songs are just starting not to make sense anymore. Like Katy Perry's "I kissed a girl". What good does this promote? And i used to love hip-hop, but now all they talk about is about how much money, girls, and material items they have. It used to be raps about real things, but now its a disgrace. They call themselves role models? Now on the streets, i hear little children cursing, its sad to see that, especially when its from a song. Also, whats up with this satanic music? its kinda weird you know. People l worshiping him in their music? That is wrong!

All I got out of that is "All this swearing and homosexuals and satan lovers is screwin' our childhood! It a'int right!"

Seriously though, you sounded like an overly protective parent who thinks all this new-fangled music is evil and from the devil and turns people gay and use bad words.

How does that not sound ridiculous to you?

I never said all, and plus, most music is changing for the worse. it may not be bad now, but it might have an impact later.

HAI GUYS! Guess what! I kissed a girl. And I liked it. (Actually, no I didn't, but who cares...It's a decent song by the way, the lyrics are just a bit...Abnormal.)

Anyway, the world is changing. Don't be a Luddite. Unless you want to be really traditional, which I'm fine with, change with the world, adapt, get used to it. Deal with it. I'm not really a fan of rap nor punk nor whatever you say is Satanic, but at least I don't complain about it. It was bound to happen...Though I have to admit, I'm starting to dislike a lot of parents, for being way too lenient.

By the way, Mozart is by far the best role model. I mean, no swears or bad words! Unless the song/piece has notes in the order of F-A-*, little kids should be fine!

so Mr. "Rap Elitist"

Lol, I'm far from a rap elitist. I mainly listen to Metal. I do listen to some rap occasionally, but it's not like I'm putting down anything that you listen to, is it?

learn more than the basics about ppl

What does that have to do with anything? Everyone who cries about rap sucking hates it for the same reasons.

music also involves instruments, not always about the same thing only different words

Lots of good rap has actual drum beats in it, as Nadril said. Also, I'm sure that you would say that techno/electronica would be music as well, even though it is very heavy on synthesizer usage, so how would that make rap any different? And about it always being the same thing just with different words, that's because you never tried listening to it to notice differences. Seriosly, the only thing all rap has in common is rapping and a beat. I could easily say all mainstream rock is the same too. It's all just people playing power chords and basic drum beats with an average vocalist, and they all play the same thing, they just have different words.

I dont listen to MTV/the radio

That's nice, but you have to be getting rap music to stereotype off of from somewhere, don't you?

I never said rappers didnt like rapping

i just said they do it more for the money than they like it

err...

everyone who raps is a SELL OUT

they rap, not because they like it, but because they want to make money

Sounds awfully like that to me.

i like rock, metal, grunge, hair metal, jazz, country, old music(1920s-present), hardcore, punk is a little sketchy, basically anything but rap, pop and hip-hop

It's fine that you don't like rap, but that doesn't make it not music.

Don't assume you kno someone because they said that they dont like rap

Did I ever claim to know you? You're a pretty stereotypical "lol i h8 rap rock is betta lol"

soo what?

u listen to metal so ur "better" than me?

a synthisizer is not an instrument. it produces sounds that supposebly sounds like other instruments

if they wanted it to sound like the real instruments, theyd use the real instruments

they use beats from drums, but not drums, they press a button for the beat

I count techno/electronica as a form of wordless rap

I never meant that rap isnt a form of music, I just meant that its not as skill required as other forms of music

So, then by your definition then a choir wouldn't count as music either, right?

music

noun

1. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

2. the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.

The amount of times in the past months I've had to pull up the definition of 'music' is appalling.

e:

a synthisizer is not an instrument. it produces sounds that supposebly sounds like other instruments

Is a keyboard not an instrument then? After all you're just pressing buttons and it shares a lot of similarities to a synthesizer.

This is a very common misconception about "computer generated" beats. Yes, it might not be an actual drum set, but it still takes skill to make a beat that sounds good. You don't just press a "make beat" button to get a beat. You have to spend a lot of time working with a program such as Fruity Loops to come up with something that sounds decent. And actually, a very good synthesizer can sound like an actual instrument to someone who doesn't know otherwise.

I count techno/electronica as a form of wordless rap

Well that's just stupid. Most Electronica that I listen to (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream) sounds NOTHING like ANYTHING that could be used as a rap beat.

I never meant that rap isnt a form of music, I just meant that its not as skill required as other forms of music

Again, I ask: Have you ever tried making a beat, writing lyrics that fit, and actually rapping them? Beats are difficult to make if they are any good, lyrics that have to rhyme are incredibly difficult to write, and actually rapping and sounding good is not just "fast talking" or something that "anyone can do".

i think what he means is that instaments take skill to lern how to play even simple songs and a sythisizer is... well.... "look at me i make music by pressing simple buttons.

No matter what I say this argument always goes in circles. Where did everyone get the idea that only the people who play guitar are so talented yet apparently writing music is easy and is done in a few simple buttons.

Hint, the difficult part of music is composition and not playing the instrument. I played an instrument for 6 years, throughout middle and high school, and I could not compose a good song for the life of me.

Sorry, but people hold the guys who can play an instrument up with such godlike status it makes me wonder if they've actually ever done it. I have great respect for the talented guitarists out there, but pretty much all of the great guitarists are great composers as well.

Mainstream punk is even worse then mainstream rap. Looking at the list of bands you like it doesn't seem like you deviate from the mainstream much anyways.

Maybe in a poll on an internet forum but in real life rap would win considering that it is the biggest selling single genre of music today. I say that not as somebody trying to say rap is better as I like both genres.

I knew this thread turn out like this, I can only see this ending in a lock.

why are we fighting over the meaning of music? i listen to it cause i like it, and i like the meaning, i dont need or care if i get aproval to what i listen to

I don't care what you listen to. I showed the meaning of music because (whats his name) stated that you can not create music without an instrument like a guitar.

Dude, I play bass in a choir, its a form of music

Also, a keyboard you actually play more than once, a synthisizer records beats and replays them

So just singing in a choir is music, but rapping isn't?

Also you're still crazy ignorant about how people go about creating music with a synthesizer. I mean, what, do you think they just press the beat button or something?

whoa whoa whoa

Except that rap is a form of music. Your opinion doesn't mean [cabbage] for it because it's wrong, it fits the exact definition of music and you're ignorant to think else wise.

And what if a choir is monotonous? Does music have to have a certain amount of ranges, or something, for it to be classified as music? Where do you draw the line at?

The hypocrisy of your statements is astounding. So, what would be YOUR definition of the word music?
