What next for G.E? Prevent manipulation?

So it has come to pass that JAGeX have dealt the first blow. This will indeed slow down the greedy, unscrupulous manipulators. Will it stop them? No of course not. The way they want the game is so that they can show off their wealth and if they have to take it all from unsuspecting real players then that is what they will continue to do. Each time this happens JAGeX will tighten the screws. What next? Fixed prices for all items? Thats right think about how that would take away alot of enjoyment.

So to all the manipulators and their supporters I say go and invest in the real economy and see how you like to be treated by the rich and experienced because you are trying to ruin this game

Yes, we think this is bad. If you can't beat them, you try harder. If you want to make a thread to help other people get screwed over, go ahead and watch it go down in flames.

but manipulating the grand exchange isn't against the rules, bartering was already a popular way of making money and if you think this is incredibly unfair and makes no sense then maybe you should look into how the stock market (what the GE is based on) works.

Oh? We should base it on the American stock market?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_manipulation

Market manipulation is prohibited under Section 9(a)(2)[2] of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and in Australia under Section s 1041A of the Corporations Act 2001. The Act defines market manipulation as transactions which create an artificial price or maintain an artificial price for a tradable security.

Pools

"Agreements, often written, among a group of traders to delegate authority to a single manager to trade in a specific stock for a specific period of time and then to share in the resulting profits or losses."[3]

Runs

"When a group of traders create activity or rumors in order to drive the price of a security up." An example is the Guinness share-trading fraud of the 1980s. In the US, this activity is usually referred to as painting the tape[4].

Bear raid

"Attempting to push the price of a stock down by heavy selling or short selling."[6]

Sound familiar?

activity or rumours to drive the price of a security up

This part is particularly relevant to rs. With the spread of rumours of the activity by cartels, it causes the general rs public to panic, helping the initial drop of the "stock". By the cartel working together, they cause high activity and spread rumours to effect the price of the item being manipulated.

I can myself generally conclude that activity like this occurring in real life WOULD be persecuted.

This is now the FOURTH time I've posted this.

Fo' SHO! I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy after all.

If Jagex tries to take sweeping actions in an attempt to protect us from this danger, though, you know people are just going to take to the streets and start mindlessly rioting due to their complete incomprehension of the topic at hand. O hai I'm not even referring to the wilderness-removal updates!

agree with phyco-robot, this reeks of a justification mentality. If you forget all the normal morallity issues for a second, there is another problem.

What will happen when (not if) Jagex takes action to prevent manipulation?

Well, there will probably be limits on value traded in a week or something, or maybe we will loose our =/-5% freedom on go to say 2.5%. Maybe Jagex will perma freeze the market and do any pricing changes manualy.

Do we see where I am going with this?

Whatever happends (and something will happen), average players, merchanters, manipulators, skillers, everyone is going to be screwed over by some plan to prevent manipulation. Maybe it will just be suspending the demeand relationship for a week or two, but it will take something really noticable to actualy stop manipulation.

So manipulators, think aboiut this. You should all know Jagex will not stand for manipulation indefinatly, and you can be assured a plan is already in the works. By forcing Jagex to add more limitations you nto only ruin things like the GE for yourself, but for everyone else. Those few greeds manipulators could kill merchanting because they wan't to make money faster or without taking as much of a risk.

Personaly, I would like to see 2 things happen to manipulators because I see taking advantage of another ignorance is morally worng. First, I want to see there entire banks auctioned off to those who have lost money as a result of their actions. Second I want to them all perma banned.

I don't think anything drastic will happen such as a limit on profit that you can make. I don't understand exactly how the GE works, but from what I know, manipulating as it stands depends on the manipulator being able to buy thousands and thousands of an item BEFORE the item price raises to reflect this boosted "demand", then selling all his items at the new high price BEFORE it updates to reflect the low demand and huge supply. If the GE price updates were more frequent, the entire system would fall apart! If a player bought something to drive the price up, they themselves would have to PAY the higher price that THEY created! The profits from manipulating would be cut drastically.

you're right. They are yo-yoing and I think raws should be LESS than cooked foods. Every raw material for any skill costs more now because of the skillcape addition

for the person who posted above me, i don't think you know how the GE or the price mechanism works...the reason why raw fish is more expensive than cooked fish is that there is a higher demand for raw fish. this is because people are able to gain experience from cooking raw fish and if jagex placed the price of raw fish below that of cooked fish, LOADS of people will be buying up raw fish to cook, earn exp and EVEN MAKE A PROFIT FROM COOKING which is ridiculous...thus eventually the market will correct iself and the price of raw fish will rise with the rising demand while that of cooked fish will drop with the rising SUPPLY to the prices that they currently are now. -.-

i really don't think we need more regulation till the point that we can only have 1 sara gs or whatever crap...seriously the RS market is much more regulated than markets in the world...you should be glad that players are not allowed to short-sell in runescape (well to be realistic this is true in just about any other game as well)

if short-selling were introduced it would bring the prices of certain items including rares close to 0 at times the same way short selling brought lehman and merrill lynch to their knees as well as how short-selling triggered the 1997 Asian financial crisis...

merchanting causes prices to change which many people just assume to be price manipulation. However, merchanting has always been around even before the GE just that it was much less noticeable because trade was done on a 1 to 1 basis and everyone else was not affected by a trade between 2 people. however now with the GE, trading one the GE between 2 people will affect the price of a good which will affect EVERYONE else...thus the introduction of the GE and especially the availability of graphs of the price of goods on the GE allowed everyone to see how the prices of a certain item fluctuate much more.

imo, regulation like those which you suggested will do more harm than good..what i suggest is that if you can't beat them, join them ;) like me

maxed out melee on 10/10/08, current goal: 94/99 cooking

life may be unfair, but why can't it be unfair in my favor?
