Binded or Bound

Featured Replies

It was during a war that I heard someone say that he just got bound. Immediately I corrected him and said that the proper way to say it is "binded". A discussion ensued but it was eventually interrupted by the fallin leader who said that we shouldnt be discussing such things during a war. The word did get stock in my head and I cant seem to get rid of it until I find its proper way to say it.

I know that the past tense of the verb bind is bound. You dont say I got bited by the dog. The proper way to say it is I got bit by a dog. But when we use the word bind in RS we are not referring to the actual verb. We are using it somewhat as a proper noun. When we say binded we are acknowledging that this word represents a special action.

I might not be an expert in grammar but to me using bound sounds wrong. But how would you say it?

The hexes and holding spells in RS mostly have names that would allow for past tense:

Confuse = Confused

Weaken = Weakened

Curse = Cursed

Bind = Bound

Snare = Snared

Vulnerability = Made Vulnerable

Enfeeble = Enfeebled

Entangle = Entangled

Stun = Stunned

It's up to the person's interpretation really. Personally, I don't find either one easier. In fact, I barely use it at all as I am usually just calling for a bind.

Technically bound is gramatically correct. :P

"Bound" is the grammatically correct form; technically the word "bound" in the phrase "he is bound" would be an adjective since it is describing the state of being bound, but the predicate phrase ("is bound") which it is part of is a verb. It is the past participle, I think.

So yeah regardless of the context, the normal form is "bound" and there is no reason to deviate from that; the only situation I can recall where you'd have an actual difference is "hanged" and "hung", but that exists only because the older term "hanged" has been preserved in legal language. We haven't been around long enough and we aren't important enough to make "binded" into an actual word. :P

"Bound" is the correct way to say it, but Runescape aint a grammar lesson, eh? ;)

I usually keep it simple and stick to the present tense, ie. 'That's a great bind there' or 'get a re-bind ready'. I would say bound though, ie 'ok keep him bound and he can't tank us lads'.
