OldJoe
The next-gen consoles will not come until a couple of years. I have no insider information (lol), but i guess maybe in 2010 a new Xbox will come? No idea at all, to be honest. But i'd go for the Xbox 360 with 60gb hd. Good price, and you got many games to choose from. I don't even own a 360, but that's the one i'd go with, seems to be the most price-worthy. Nadril
You're in luck, the Xbox 360 goes for $299 currently. I find the console pretty boring myself (Well I found all of this generations consoles to be boring) but that is purely a matter of opinion. SPMc
No doubt your be wanting a xbox due to price requirments and how much they are compared to the outlandish price of the PS3. But dont forget you may have that amount of money to blow on the console but you've got to buy a few games as well so think about where your be getting the extra money from as well. AndyPandy
I'd go for a PS3. It may be more expensive, but you get a Bluray player, free online, more powerful, and it has some brilliant games lined up. You can also get linux on it and run it as a PC too. So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth, These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf, Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in, Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything, Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel, Tear up the book and write your own damn rules, Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got, And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut, And realise that the other world that you're always looking for, Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door, And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas, After all, you were put on the earth to do this, So shine your light so bright that all can see, Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be. It's a pitty that the playstation 3 is almost $100 out of his budget, isn't it? And really, saying that being able to hack it and put linux on it is a big bonus for the OP? Come on. I'm not a fan of any of the next gen consoles, but the 360 is the best value for its price. Well as long as microsoft doesn't [bleep] you $100 out of a goddamn wireless adapter. stevepole
With the price drop to the xbox 360, I would get that. Many of the major titles are on both consoles so you wont be disappointed by your purchase by lack of hit titles. Xbox Live if you choice to have that has a larger user base then I find there to be on my ps3 but I don't play the major titles online as I had them already for my 360. The next generation of consoles shouldn't be around until 2011 or later.

slymongoose
With the risk of being laughed at... I couldn't help but notice how no one has mentioned the (Nintendo) Wii thus far, or is that not considered a console? I mean I have a (Nintendo) Wii, and its fairly alright...although I'm not a "gamer"...really...I keep things relatively simple, like "Mario" type games. Or...just maybe...lol you guys consider the Wii a console, just as much as Internext Explorer is a browser? Please do enlighten. :D Quotes from Sly: => "There's no magic to programming, just LOGIC." => "Only the best, is good enough." pryomancer
The Wii isn't a console for hardcore gamers, they favour the 360/PS3. I heard the Wii has a really bad online experience, nowhere near as good at the 360.

Caxis
The only games I've been playing on my Wii are SSBB and old virtual console games. In fact, the only games I've been looking forward to are on the VC ...

thrash-boy
My mum doesn't want to spend cash on something that's 'stupid' well im not you but personally i do think consoles are stupid. i have a ps1 and ps2 but never use them anymore because the ps2 is stuffed and ps1 is boring, plus i have better things to waste my money on (my old holden, yes im aussie if you don't know what that is). my pc is perfectly capable of entertaining me and i can browse ebay with it to, so why would i want a console. but you can spend your cash on a console if you want, just saying i wouldn't bother, expessially after all the lights of death or whatever they call them that xbox360's have. pryomancer
Consoles are good because they are completely dedicated, unlike the majority of PC's unless you spend a lot customising one, whereas a console is probably ~£200-300, a gaming pc will be in the thousands. fubol
You guys are saying 360 is bad O.o? If you think there is a portable console that's better , tell me :P I don't want a wii  Well , i got a ps2 but i don't like it annymore so i don't want a ps3 , even if i could afford it , i want something new What's the best option then : ? But as I said, for casual, fun-loving "gamers" like myself, its alright. But as for fubol, he doesn't want a PS3 or a Wii, so I guess by process of elimination...that leaves...? You don't want a wii and a PS3, so that leaves portable machines (Ds, Psp, iPod Touch?) or 360. If I was you, I would go with 360 lite
