Look, Jagex isn't slapping FTP in the face or anything. From a business standpoint, they couldn't care less about FTP - the ENTIRE purpose of FTP is to get people to buy members. That's the ONLY reason it exists; Jagex gives them the bare minimum to get them enjoying the game, and forces them to sign up for members. Period.

Yeah, because the 5m active FTPers each earn a dollar a month through ads. Given that the ads I use on my sites generate at the most 1-3 cents per click, I doubt Jagex is making a fortune off FTP. I'll bet it barely covers their server costs; them things are expensive. Out of curiosity, where did the '270k a month' figure come from? And since when is 1m a year from FTP > 66m from PTP?

I hope you all know that now that Jagex is done fixing up the old wilderness, F2P will most likely go back to, aside from holidays and graphics, getting like 3 updates a year.

A lot less then that. 120 million FTP accounts created; 5 million active (playing once a week). If I got a dollar a month from every person that visited one of my websites from advertisements, I'd be sitting on a beach in the bahamas instead of posting in this thread.

Why would you get an update? What do you contribute to the game other than taking up server space? Ads don't fully pay for F2P so you aren't even helping Jagex make a little bit of money. F2P deserve nothing, Jagex has always given you holiday events and that was why you got the quest because it was related. You got PvP worlds to replace the old wilderness. You aren't going to receive a minigame, you don't deserve it. Get that into your head and maybe you won't be ignorant enough to start complaining when updates for members aren't given to free players.

It's as said, we probably barely generate enough money for them to cover certain costs. But it's still important for this game.

FTP does not benefit Jagex. What about 'barely covering server costs' don't you understand? There's far more costs to a game then servers. What about customer support? With 130x the accounts, I'm betting that FTP results in far more abuse reports that have to be dealt with. And what other goals would they have besides to make money by having you become a member? They probably aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

I'm reminded of the old saying, "you get what you pay for". Simple point of fact is that there are a number of companies that have games where you can only play if you pay. To expect more than you fair share, or greed, is a common trait in most people. Everybody always wants to get the most they can out of as little work as possible. Regardless of whether you're an F2P or P2P, you will always see people begging to borrow expensive items or get free stuff. In one way or another, you will always find people wanting more. Not to mention this is a competitive mini-game, which means you are going to have all the associated pains that let you give your Ignore button a workout.

I think it is fair for members to get annoyed with F2Pers sometimes, obviously like you say not all free players are whining for updates but when some do it really gets on my nerves. I don't have a problem with free players, if you find enough content in the game without playing thats great, but if you want more you shouldn't complain when members that pay on a regular basis get something that you want.

It's no wonder that there's an epic battle between F2P and P2P... posts like this make me ashamed to call myself a member. We members are no more deserving than F2P players. I don't understand how paying a "whopping" $5/month makes any of us better than F2Pers...

 

 

 

At any rate, most people have seemed to forgotten what the original post was about, and are just arguing amongst themselves.

 

 

 

I'm totally sympathetic towards what Jenove was saying. Although I do understand that the whole point of paying to be a member is to gain access to a larger version of the game, it is rather frustrating to be a F2P player and receive one or two updates a year.

 

 

 

It's always thrown out there that "F2P is just Jagex's way to get people to become members." Frankly, I don't think this is quite a valid point. Playing an outdated and ignored version of the game does not in any way, shape, or form make me want to pay to play the same game, even if there is more content.

 

 

 

I think ignoring free-to-play is a poor move on Jagex's part, and in the long run, I think we'll all see that it does more harm than good.
