Latinoking
Wow, America is slow. In some aspects such as energy efficient cars and such, but when it comes to other stuff (mostly military) the USA is ahead. indy500fan
Most of the newer satellite boxes have digital tuners built in them, so if you get your locals through an antenna and have that antenna attached to your satellite box, you don't need a 2nd converter box. I didn't know that, that's good to know. All the people I know with satellite get their local channels through the satellite so I never had to worry about that. Faux
Wow, America is slow. Not really. The first country to pull off the switch only did it two years ago. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

Faux
Don't be a fool. Do you even know what we're talking about? US have had digital TV for years. This is about turning off analog broadcast. It's not a big deal for anyone who already pays for digital cable. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

Don't be a fool. It is when the digital broadcast goes down for whatever reason and there's no alternative. That said, there's no reason to justify analogue anymore when near everyone has some form of digital coverage. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
indy500fan
Don't be a fool. It is when the digital broadcast goes down for whatever reason and there's no alternative. There are 7100 stations in the US that the switch doesn't apply to compared to 1800 that it does. If you want to stay analog, you can still pick up 80% of the stations after the switch. I use stolen cable, do I need a converter box? As I and others have said a multiple times before in this topic, if you have cable you don't need to worry about anything. Clearly the proposal is different in the US than here then. Over here, the analogue signal will be turned off. Completely. End of. If you don't have digital by the turnover, you're screwed. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

Low power stations are not forced to go digital (yet), but most of these are stations you have never heard of or watched anyway. lordkafei
OK, since I have cable, I know this won't affect my home. But, why are they doing this? Is all I ask. It's all about money. US television uses channels 2-69 presently. With DTV, they can squeeze the channels in tighter. With analog TV, there had to be gaps between the channels to prevent them from interfering from each other. So with DTV, they can squeeze the channels closer together and use less spectrum. After the conversion is done, they will take channels 52-69 and sell the spectrum for other uses. Channel 51 will be the highest TV channel. indy500fan
Yep, there were billions of dollars changing hands when this happened. Just a small part of it went to subsidizing the converters in the form of a $40 off coupon.
