Forum Advertisement Ideas

It has been said by the admins, and some mods that the forums do not pick up their own weight in terms of money. Though because apparently Silverion or whoever is in control of the financial aspect of Tip.It hardly lets loose of what makes what, so I really don't know if the rumours that the forums do not make enough to support themselves but are held up by the website ads as well. Anyways...

 

 

 

The board has one advertisement. That's it. I think Tip.It has several ways to increase the ads without users getting too unhappy.

 

 

 

1. The large ad at the top.

 

 

 

Is there a reason why it is so large? Is the money from views/clicks equal to the proportion/pixel size of the banner? If not, wouldn't it be better to find a smaller ad, and then put two side by side up at the top? This way you could potentially get double? Then again if the size of the ad there is giving what two ads could give, then disregard this.

 

 

 

2. Unregistered users.

 

 

 

If you're unregistered, why not view more ads? They haven't registered really, so why not put more ads in? Here's some places where you could put ads for them:

 

 

 

First post of every topic. Basically the second post in a topic, but it goes below the main post. This could even work for registered users, though I suggest a poll if this happens.

 

 

 

Last post of every topic. Would only be enabled if the topic had more than two pages, so it wouldn't like redundant having two ad posts on one page.

 

 

 

At the bottom of the forums between the Board Index link and the 'post reply' button.

 

 

 

Could possibly place ads in certain 'high traffic' topics through-out the forums. So they only appear in that topic (if possible?).

 

 

 

I don't know, it just seems that Tip.It isn't utilizing a lot of forum space, and since there's no new features, why not use ads? Sure people don't like ads, but I'm pretty sure there's a large portion of unregistered users who use the forums, where a good amount could be generated from. You could even include in the ad post a sentence of 'To disable these ads, please register'. Then of course you'd put an ad in the Register screen too!

 

 

 

So I'm just wondering here. I don't particularly know if there are ad companies that can be this versatile with the placements of the ads, but it's not bad trying to find any. Also don't know what connections there are between the ad on here, and the ads on the main site, that may cause conflicts by removing the one on here.

Tip.it actually has more than one ad and if you use Firefox and some ad-blocking software it filters it out.

 

I believe as stated by Silverion when we were bombarded by that unfortunate attack that we they gain money from ads, but on a clicking basis. With the majority of the users here being so Firefox and ad-blocking aware, that only leaves one ad that we are forced to somewhat view. ^ Up there.

 

 

 

I don't think much of the tip.it users click those ads anyways, so I don't really see the need of increasing ads we aren't going to click anyways. If you want to support tip.it, you can buy their t-shirts and contribute to their donations because this whole website has been a whole voluntary action that Silverion has started for us. Tip.it in my eyes is thriving right now, otherwise they wouldn't have been making expansion to their website such as the move to PhpBB2 and custom signatures from tip.it and loosening the limitation on signature and avatars. Besides, if Silverion was really that low on the green mo, you wouldn't have anywhere to post ;)

I thought the 'pop-up' only appeared once, and then never was viewable again until the time out runs out, or a new session is started? Meaning you won't get two pop-ups from going to the main site, to the forums. Correct? I'm not talking about the website, but the forums. The forums only have one ad. The main site has more.

I hardly ever click ads, sometimes I do when I remember it'll help Tip.It, but more than likely I'll ignore them. However when you meant 'we' I assume you meant the users of Tip.It, but I don't know if you meant registered, or non-registered users. Registered will most likely never be bothered by them, but I do know that people do click ads if they are somewhat interesting and don't sound corny/like a scam. So it's not all for a loss. Plus the ads are clicked on the site, which fuels money as said by admins/mods, so I can only assume that the ads on the forums would thus as well bring in some form of payment.

There's many things that will make a fansite expand it's features, other than just booming with the money to pay for them. Things like competition and deals do play a factor into it as well. I'm not saying expenses weren't something to consider with the updates, but I don't think they were that big of a deal because Tip.It needed to expand it's features to include the various updates.

 

 

 

I'm not saying silv is poor, or whatever, but I know I wouldn't want to be putting in my own money to pay for the site and such when there are large amounts of unused forum space, or potential space usable for ads.

Hmm, let's see. Without code changes (As in PHP changes) the only ones possible are 1 and 2, although putting it on the first post of a topic could work, I think. I think this is more up to the admins though, they know the money situation. I think if they were having problems they would have put more up already.

I wouldn't mind seeing more advertisements if it allows Tip.it to stay alive. However it might turn off other users as excessive popups seem to draw people away. The same with excess advertising.

I hate popups, but in comparison to other forums, Tip.It is quite empty when it comes to ads. I wouldn't mind more.

As for more adverts, Tip.It would have to be careful... Too much, and half the of community's users disappear... :( ... Would there be any way to add some "text tag"-type adverts, as in the kind of a thing you find near the bottom or side of a page? You know, those short "text phrase" thingies with outbound links, but not as large as a 'google text advert'... :-s (Definitely NEVER the ones that lay into the posts on a page... I got really ticked at those. ...)

Not necessarily true. It's been awhile since I have talked to Silverion, but I can say that if there was a major problem with cash flow, he would add more advertisements. I wouldn't worry about it.

Why fix something that isn't broken? Remember that this site is completely run voluntarily so if the site survives on the bare minimum, that makes everyone happy :D

Simply clicking on a ad once a day keeps more ads away. ;)

 

 

 

SIlv said during the DDos attack that really is the best way to help. Adding more ads would only encourage users to block them. Tip.It has less than other fan sites because of the community, off and on the forum. If it was a problem I think Silv would just ask... he made the site for the love of the game and that is the same principles it is ran on. The community and supporters are part of what makes us so vibrant! Besides, the forum belongs to the site so it only makes sense that they support each other. :

 

 

 

I have no idea of finacial situation and these are my personal thoughts. :thumbup:
