"Rate/Hate"

I'm wondering what other people think of it, does anyone think that rating/hating really does the artist any good?

If you rate it, you tell them how good you think it is. Sure, that's fine, but a rating doesn't tell anything more (Unless you add more of course) than that your sig/whatever is really crappy or that it's cool. Wohoo, the artist doesn't know how to improve it or what made it so good, but s/he does know that someone liked or didn't like it.

And hating is even worse, it just tells the author that it was bad. Nothing more to say really. I'm surprised at how many people still put "New sig, rate/hate" as a topic title.

Your thoughts?

I post them all the time, although new to this particular forums. For one art is opinion so not everyone will ever agree the same (just do not let them get to you). For example some people probably really dislike van goghs style of painting. However there is no denying he can paint art. For me whether someone hates what I have made or not I take what they said and use it to my advantage. I have done many different styles of graphics in the past 5 yrs and tons of ideas and styles I have made to this day came from Harsh CC, as well as praise. No matter how good you are at something there will always be someone who does not like what you have done. When someone gives me CC, I keep an open mind about it and I usually incorporate what they said into my next piece or work that is similar (sig/sig cd4/cd4 /wallpaper/wallpaper etc.). Thus broadening my knowledge on different styles and learning new things each time I make a new graphic. Thats why I post them

Rate/hate usually works for me. It gives me an idea of what people like to see, and often helps me see the mistakes I miss.

My point is just the opposite- To say "1/10 i hate it" doesn't point out any mistakes. It just says that someone thinks it's awful.

If someone says something positive like, "I like it," then that can be helpful. Obviously if the person were to elaborate, it would be even more helpful.. but at least you know that you did something right and as pryomancer said, the morale boost is nice ;)

But brief, "It sucks," comments are terrible. They're hurtful, unhelpful, and leave you with a million questions.

Agreed, the hope is that if someone can say your graphic is a 1/10 they should be able to back that up with some CC. If they do then it can possibly help after all.

A lot of art is subjective but it still follows a lot of very hard set guidelines. Those guidelines are what people should be critiquing on.

Rate/hate is a stupid system. Arbitrary numbers out of 10, or a mere "hate it," is not something you should bother posting when the artist asks for criticism.

Praise is all relative, and aside from being a nice morale booster, it's pretty useless. In "tag" forums and other amateur art forums, constant praise can even be counterproductive. :-#

I think telling someone you like or dislike their art is a good thing at least. Some people don't really understand art and can't give detailed criticism, but I don't think it's fair to keep them from voicing their opinion about it. People know what they like, even if they don't know about it. I couldn't build a sports car, but I still appreciate the effort and skill that went into designing it.

Yeah, I agree just rating someone's work or saying "it sux" is completely pointless. Even if you don't know a lot about that particular style of art, you can still at least try to say what you like or hate about the piece. That being said, I don't think that things like "it sucks!!!" should be considered any less constructive than ego boosters like "it ownzz!!!". Both are (unless, of course, intended humorously), stupid. But then there are also those rare situations when really, all you can say is 'Wow'. :P
