My step-dads after an ipod touch for christmas as a gift from my mum but she's abit put of by the price. I know apple has a tendency to up the price on their products that essentially the same as others. My question is are there cheaper alternatives to the Ipod touch with basically the same features?

The short answer no. You're not going to find anything that compares to the App Store. Which, if you're not using, should just settle with a Nano/Classic. There are some alternatives to the touch, but nothing really cheaper and certainly not comparable to it.

I'm typing this on my ipod touch right now. ::'

Laura's got it right. I don't recommend a Touch if you don't have wireless Internet and/or are just going to listen to your iTunes music and videos. But if you have WiFi, I think it's a great product.

Do you qualify for an Education Discount?

Apple offers special education pricing on Apple computers, software and select third party products to the following groups:

College students

Teachers, Administrators, and Staff of all grade levels

This is from the apple store.

Just got my iPod Touch yesterday and I love it. The App Store is brilliant and if you don't want to pay theres lots of free stuff on there.

So to answer your question, no, I don't think theres really an alternative that comes anywhere near as good as the iPod Touch. ;)

i still don't understand..... What's so good about ipod touch?

I mean the whole idea of an ipod is to listen 2 music...and this big thing is pretty hard to carry around in your pockets. If you want to go online anywhere, buy a tablet PC or a notebook.

when my old ipod nano dies, i'm getting zunes, i hate itunes....

Quit runescape on Jan 6th of 2008, at level of 115 with around 150M worth of item in bank...however stats still remains

Nothing matches the iPod Touch. The only thing that comes in a distant second is the Archos. It's much more than listening to music. The App Store has turned iPods into a game boy, a PDA, a television, and much more. Unless you absolutely need HD space, the Touch is probably the best one there.

Maybe OP isn't keen on Apple's strict DRM? Anyway, I'll doubt you'll find a touch screen mp3 player that's not a phone for anything less than the price of the cheapest Ipod touch. You could always see if you could find a first generation touch going cheaper (only difference is it doesn't have a built in loudspeaker) if you don't mind buying second hand.

IF you don't like their DRM just don't buy your music from Itunes - use standard MP3's. There is no built in DRM that will somehow stop you from playing your own music.

Well, yes there is a cheaper alternative, but it depends alot in what you want:

iPod Touch 32GB (2nd gen)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FA1O0E/sr=8-4/qid=1230146355/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230146355&sr=8-4

Price: $375.96

Archos 5 60 GB Internet Media Tablet

http://www.amazon.com/Archos-60-Internet-Media-Tablet/dp/B001D06BWC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230146374&sr=1-5

Price: $339.99

The Archos is really good, but it may not be what you want. There is also a widget store (same as app store on the itouch)

You can watch 720p videos with the right plugin. It has an internet browser with Flash 9 support etc.

I agree that some plugins are pricey -.-

It's really up to you, but i am happy with my Zen X-Fi 32GB
