Construction Tips

Lep

Recommended Posts

If I had known about some of these things when training Construction and building my house, I would have saved about 20M. Too bad none of these are mentioned anywhere, which is why I thought I'd put up some tips. ;)

I hope this helps some of you, I know it would have helped me. :?

General

-Just because you have the ability to build all of the best stuff, doesn't mean you should. You shouldn't build 30 Teleport Traps just because there are 30 Trap hotspots. You shouldn't make Hanging Skeletons and Skull Torches everywhere in your Dungeon, that makes it feel cluttered.

-Don't build the best of something in your house until you are 100% positive that's what you want to do.

-Go to other peoples houses to get ideas, but try to do something unique. Such as a Maze.

-You cannot have a room against the very border edge of the house zone, if you attempt to do so it just creates another square of land, so do not base your house on having a door blocked by the border, because that doesn't work.

-A symmetrical house is more favoured by people and is easier to find things easier than a huge and expanded house.

-Do not base your house on glitches and rooms with glitches! These will most likely be fixed one day and could ruin your house design.

-There are a few rooms you should keep close to the Portal because it is much more convenient to your guests and often to you, the owner. These rooms include the Chapel, Study, Quest Hall with Glory and the Portal Chamber(s).

Bedroom

-You can buy the Gilded Wardrobe, Gilded Dresser, Gilded Clock and Gilded 4-Poster as Flatpacks which only cost a few thousand each in the Grand Exchange, saving you hundreds of thousands.

-The 2 Bedrooms required to have a Butler are completely useless after 99 Construction unless your house requires a Butler for a certain aspect of the house or you just prefer to have one.

-Bedrooms provide absolutely no party value when hosting a party so you should remove them for more party valued rooms unless you need the Bedrooms for the point mentioned above.

Games Room

-You can only have 1 of these in your house.

-No one ever plays the Archery Target or the Dartboard during house parties so you'd do best to get the Hoop and Stick game because people actually play it.

Combat Room

-The Combat Ring is the most favoured and most used of all of the available types during house parties. To make the most out of a Combat Ring you will want to put it beside a Chapel Room in your Dungeon, that is one of the main attractions during a house party.

-Ranging Pedestals are nice, but you need to give people a reason to use them. The best way to do this is to put them in the Dungeon and act as a "Dungeon Junction" so that people HAVE to go past them, giving the Ranging Pedestals a purpose and so people actually use them. If you make the Ranging Pedestals in an unpopular area, it rarely gets used.

Dining Room

-This room can be used as a means to get back into your house with the Pull Bell to call the Butler. Think creatively to use it.

-This room is currently used mainly for it's possible glitches, but don't base your design on those because one day they will be fixed.

Quest/Skill Hall

-Not much to mention besides the Staircases. If your Staircase only leads to an above room, then don't build a Spiral Staircase. It's annoying for the guests to have to right click and choose to go up, just build a normal Staircase. If it goes both up and down, then build a Spiral Staircase.

Study

-Not much to say besides to make sure to build the Eagle Lecturn and not the Demon Lecturn. People use Eagle much more at house parties.

-Don't build this room in a Dungeon or beside in another room because if the Telescope is blocked from outside view, you can't use it.

-You should build this near your Portal.

Chapel

-Marble Burners are not required for the full bonus, they just cost more.

-You should have a Chapel with a Gilded Altar close to your Portal and a Chapel with an Altar in your Dungeon beside a Combat Room.

Formal Garden

-A Marble Wall might be cool, but it is very hard to see with any of the hedges because they are all bigger than it is. If you build a Marble Wall, it looks better if your have multiple Formal Gardens together with Marble Walls so that they connect and can be seen easier.

-Only really necessary to have one of the for a Portal. However, even though the Formal Garden is basically useless just like a Garden, it is often popular for people to hang out in during house parties.

Throne Room

-I highly suggest not building a Greater Demon Cage. It is extremely annoying for guests because they can be teleported away resulting in you losing guests during house parties.

Obliette

-You shouldn't build a Bone Cage and a Flame Pit together because they result in almost 99% death to anyone that falls into it. This is annoying to guests and after they die so many times, they don't want to come back.

Dungeon

-Teleport Traps are cool, but I highly suggest having very few of these. They get extremely annoying to guests including the owner, especially when there are 2 in a row, it is almost impossible to get past.

-Marble Traps deal no damage and even though they fall, they can still click somewhere to run and after they get up, their character will zoom over there really fast. So they basically do nothing.

-Tangle Vines should be used in spots where they will be held for other people to kill or other monsters to kill, such as in front of Ranging Pedestals or a Steel Dragon.

-This is one of the most important points you should also be thinking about. Try to find a way to make every room serve a purpose and so that people either have to go to a room or want to. For example, don't make some long corridor with a Chapel at the end, people will not use something like that. You shouldn't make 2 seperate dungeons either. Although the thought of it might be cool, no one actually wants to go through your dungeon and then enter the second one to kill some boss monster, after they kill it...woopity doo, then they just leave the room.

-People prefer dungeons that have the rooms close together rather than spread out during house parties. Keep this is mind to make every room serve a purpose.

Very nice tips!

Mayeb mention the reasons why you should palce things near other things(ex. Study near portal incase you want to make tabs)

Personally I would never recommend getting rid of any rooms, even after 99 construction. There is always the chance that you will want to train construction again (for ranks, for fun, etc.), and it would be a shame to have to remove one (or two) of your rooms to get your butler back, which could result in losing a few million gp.

Nice guide :) I'm sure it will help a lot of people. I see quite a few "How should I arrange my house?" threads in Help & Advice. Now I'll have a guide to link to ;) I know you mention this in a few sections, but just to have everything in one place, I might make a section that lists all of the rooms that you should keep as close to the portal as possible (chapel, study, portal chamber, quest hall). That way people can have one clear place to reference.

The Butler will always spawn in this room if you have one. (To my knowledge

Not true, mine's been spawning in my Parlour since I've had a house.

You might want to crop the pics a little somehow -- its gonna stretch the page for 95% of the tip it users. Remove a few of the excess squares on the right and left, and that will help a lot.

That is a really really well thought out house though, I love it.

Started free trade with 1.5m cash. 2 weeks later, have hit max cash 2x.

Heh, I was just at your house yesterday.

But anyways, thanks for the tips (especially the dungeon ones).

Oh yes, don't forget to have your quest hall somewhat close to your portal. It is nice for the mounted glory.

I like that picture, I've been wanting to do that as well with the fish trophies. Shark is really hard to get though...Also still need the KBD Heads. :? I love how Jagex has the exact same examine for all three fish trophies. -.-

As for where the Butler spawns, I'll remove it. I have no idea how it works. After removing and rebuilding another room a few times, my Butler now spawns there instead. :o

I'm not sure but all I know is you gain profit and Mage experience at the same time. The closeness to the Portal is just because it's more convenient rather than running far to find it, it uses up more run energy that way and takes longer per trip.

Awesome guide! I'm going to have to use some of these tips in making my dungeon, as I already have the rest of my house planned out!

Here's my house design if you're interested... It took me a while to come up with it with all the right doors, and I designed it not so much for functionality, but for design...

Lol, its not perfect... But not bad for a quick schetch.... Keep in mind that all the rooms in italics would make a courtyard, and the rest would be off of that. I also have an upstairs off my quest hall, and it has 2 bedrooms, a games room, cb room, and skill hall.

Thanks for reading, if anyone knows an easier way to make a pic of my house... PLEASE LET ME KNOW :wall:

Edit: Dang... well, that didn't work....

I have seen the truth, and it makes no sense.

To the other guy, it is located in the Throne Room. You havn't been in my house so this isn't directed to you but it really pisses me off when people come in and act as if I have no Dungeon. It happens from at least 1 person every single house party, even by high levels in their 130s. Some idiot will come in and say something like, "No Dungeon? ROFL FAIL!" How can anyone actually be so stupid, even for Runescape, you have to be extremely dumb not to find the Dungeon. Everytime I go in someones house and can't find the Dungeon Entrance I just go to the Throne Room. Seriously, do people seriously not realize that there's a ladder in there!? It makes me so angry! :x Some higher levels will also say my house is a "fail" because I have no Dungeon Entrance. Technically I do, but it's the Skill Hall at the end of the Dungeon. But these idiots do not undserstand the simply concept that my house's entrance is in the Throne Room, not some Dungeon Entrance right in front of the Portal like the other 10,000 houses in this game. -.- It just makes me really mad, but my goal was to make a fun house for the majority of the people which I have done as I've found out from house parties. Very few people are stupid like I've said, but you will never be able to please every single person no matter what your house design is.

Speaking of stupid people, you'll find a lot of stupid people use the Gilded Altar as well. They will often ask you to light the Altar and sometimes call you a name if you don't. Sorry but I'd rather have fun. My idea of fun isn't standing beside the Altar, lighting it for every idiot that doesn't bring their own Marrentil. (Which is surprisingly A LOT) I always brought my own, I don't understand why people are too stupid to as well.

Hi, could you please tell me what you think of these houseplans?

1ST FLOOR

GROUND FLOOR

DUNGEON

...

I'm still working on the dungeon. Some help would be appreciated! :) By the way, I really like the way you use the Ranging Pedestals in ur dungeon!

Also, if there are any flaws, please tell me! Cause I want this house to be P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

I already wasted a LOT of money on construction (probably like 80M) cause I keep redecorating/rebuilding my house.

Thanks :)

Great information, thanks for all the tips. Should save me plenty of coin when I can afford to complete my house. Just one question: How much has your house cost you? (Not the skill, the actual items/rooms)

Well, it isn't as symmetrical as I'd make it myself, but it looks fine to me. ;)

As far as cost goes, I don't remember lol.
