la la la
Yes, if I had to pick one thing about this forum I hate, it is the growing use of "kiddy talk," or whatever the language used in my title is called. I have concluded that this kind of language comes from a typical growing-up stage that some of us just happened to miss. You think it is "cute" or "funny" when you talk like a completely uneducated idiot. Well, I don't find it cute or funny. I find it embarrassing. I cringe for the community when I see posts like this, especially when you people seem to be carrying on a conversation in it. Can anybody honestly say that their mind thinks "I can has to go get sum cookiez!!11"? No, our brains think "I want some cookies," so why do some people people feel the need to translate their words? If I was reading one your posts, and a friend of mine, a sibling, or a parent read over my shoulder, I would be embarrassed that I even bother reading that garbage. Not only is this trend annoying, it is increasing! People can talk about all these intangibles about why the community is getting worse-- meaner people, less generosity, etc., but this talk is tangible, and it is getting worse. It's not cute, it's not funny, and you make yourself look like an idiot.
mister_moocky
I believe intentionally misspelling and fracturing sentences was made popular by lolcats. Yeah, photographs of kittens have had an impact on modern common English. quit

Pawn
My girlfriend talks to me like that all the time :P. But not to the degree of lolcats. I hate it as well though, when people type out messages like that constantly.

If it truly was a matter of intelligence, I wouldn't insult them. I really don't mind it when someone misspells a difficult word. However, when you are intentionally misspelling things and intentionally making grammatical errors in hopes of being funny, that's when it starts to bug me. And I'm not a "grammar Nazi". Just an intentional immaturity "Nazi".

flsed
I blame cellphones. Some of the most devastating corruptions of our language stem from the text messaging system where the number of characters you can send is at a premium, so naturally you want to cram in as many abbreviated words as possible whether or not the recipient will even be able to understand what you're talking about. That was then carried over to online chat rooms and instant messaging, and before long the entire internet. Just try and ignore it. Eventually people will grow up and realise how stupid it all is, and maybe even wish they had paid attention in english classes.

That can be blamed on lolcats, but the abbreviations are definitely due to cell phones. Precisely. Honestly, I don't like it at all when people spell things wrong, and my girlfriend was fine with spelling correctly and using grammar (her friends were terrible, however), and then she got a cell phone. "ttyl ttfn ily bye" was what I got before I went to sleep (talking on AIM, of course). She's recovered from this, though, so there is some hope. When I see people say it, I pronounce it "poon" in my head. Makes more sense to me. My friend said it in real life once and I almost kneed him in the family-maker.$DO || ! $DO ; trytry: command not found
sees_all1
Usually what I think I type, not sure if everyone else is the same. Usually I'll type Hi like Hai if I want to intentionally want to stress the nature of it.. or I'll say Herro instead of Hello. This is actually what I'm thinking. Sometimes its also to make fun of different groups of people, particularly the ooze that compfreak was referencing. Its also the difference for me between -yeah/ya/yes/ye/yep/yeppers -ok/kk/k/alright -hey/sup/yo/hai/hello/herro/hi -lol/haha/rofl/lmao But that's about the extent of the slang that I'll use consistently. If you ever see me speaking stupid, and want to quote me, you should probably put a [sic] by it, because it was intentional. Although if it bothers you that much, you should treat idiocy like you would any other [developmentally delayed]ed person - speak slowly and in small words. 99 dungeoneering achieved, thanks to everyone that celebrated with me! ♪♪ Don't interrupt me as I struggle to complete this thoughtHave some respect for someone more forgetful than yourself ♪♪♪♪ And I'm not doneAnd I won't be till my head falls off ♪♪
