February 28, 200917 yr The rate for the big fish is totally random. I've seen people who have fished several thousand fish and have gotten it, and I've also seen those who have got it on their first inventory.

March 2, 200917 yr I managed to catch a big shark after catching about 9000 of them. It took me a long time, but maybe other people are more lucky. I also had a big bass before and it came pretty fast actually, but maybe at that time I was lucky, lol. But the answer to bare-handed part of your question: yes! You can catch the big fish if you fish without a harpoon as well! That's how I caught my big shark.
