whats the rate for the big fish as id like to get them for my house and can you catch the big swordfish from barehanded fishing ?

The rate for the big fish is totally random. I've seen people who have fished several thousand fish and have gotten it, and I've also seen those who have got it on their first inventory.

Pretty much falls in the same category as challenge scrolls and dragon eggs - i.e completely random.

^ Except MUCH more common then scrolls, I have 3 big sharks from randomly fishing.

Not a single big fish in my history :(

I managed to catch a big shark after catching about 9000 of them. It took me a long time, but maybe other people are more lucky. I also had a big bass before and it came pretty fast actually, but maybe at that time I was lucky, lol.

 

 

 

But the answer to bare-handed part of your question: yes! You can catch the big fish if you fish without a harpoon as well! That's how I caught my big shark.
