Getting a Job at 14 [Lock Please]

Featured Replies

When I last checked the law for Australia was 15 and 9 months. That goes without saying, it may have changed since then. What state and country do you live in? Laws are different overseas. In some countries you can work when you turn 13.

I thought it was 14 and 9 months. Either way, some employers dont' really care as long as they are getting cheap labour. My younger sister, who is turning 14 in 5 days is aleady working at Eagle Boys. She just needed a parent consent form yadda yadda yadda

Anyone here been a waiter? I'm considering it when I turn sixteen. And then, in college. Even if I only got paid a little more than minimum wage by that time (maybe eight an hour, it's how much my brother made), the tips would probably make up for it. Right?

There's more to waiting than tips though. You have to hold plates a certain way, certain ettiquette you need to follow. You have to set tables according to the menu type, always be on a certain side when you put the plate down for the customer, there's a look of work involved. Me personally i hated waitressing, it was one of the worst jobs i ever had. Having said that, we don't really tip in Australia so would the tip's over there really be enough to get you by?

In Australia, where I live anyway, You can get a job at 14. BUT, only at places like McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks (Burger King), etc etc.

I blame that for the growing popularity of fat kids..

Not fat food in schools.

Why don't you blame the kids themselves or the parents? No one forces you to eat at McD's

Yeah, that's why I want to try it out here. But the handful of people I know who've waited before say they make at least fifty dollars a night, and that's a slow, low number. On a busy night one of two of 'em made more than two hundred dollars. For four or five hours of working, even fifty seems nice. Supplemented by about ten dollars in actual salary for cab fare. :P

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
