Simply putting your name at the bottom of an original work is legally sufficient for a copyright. The technique you describe provides a means of dating and proving that your original work was created when you say it was, and provides means of proof if anyone were to steal your work and claim it was there own. I think posting here on the forum, seeing how each post is date and time stamped, is equivelent proof. Last I heard, copyright registration was around $20.00. This is the final authority in the event that your copyright is challenged, as the mail-to-yourself trick (according to them) isn't fool proof 100% of the time, mostly because it's relatively easy to falsify. That $20.00, though, will cover either a single work or a body of works collectively. If I wanted to register the copyright of all my songs (there's like over 10 of them now), I would submit them all as one single body of work. However, since these are all song parodies, and in them we both use lyrics from the original song, I'm not 100% sure we can legally copyright our works. I believe there are special rules regarding parodies and satires on existing works, and I think permission from the original author is required in order to obtain a copyright for the parody. Since I haven't bothered to contact the authors of the songs I've done, and I doubt Bubsa has either, I don't think it's worth the effort. We're not posting these songs here on this board in order to make money, which is the "clincher" in any case. The law really only matters when there's money involved.
