Lagging on my Own Server Location? Grr.

More of a vent then a rant. Im australian and as such i'd expect (or hope) the Australian servers were good. WRONG. I lag so badly on servers that are DESIGNED for Australian Locations. I have better connection to Canadian Servers for gods sake! If your going to make an Australian Based Server, take into accord the Internet we have, connections and how laggy its going to be. :wall:

I'm on an aussy server ATM, lagging precisely zero. Their server isn't lagging. Jagex can't insure that every single computer between yours and theirs has a perfectly reliable connection. There's probably a server somewhere in the route that's causing the problem. Use a different server .

Or ye laddies could just go to a different PVP world and put up with the few extra ms of lag. With only 2 servers, they can't put one in every continent, least of all the smallest one. It's all about the averages, baby...

Daft question but have you let Jagex know about the problem? If they don't know that there is a lag issue then there isn't much they can do about it. Could be the server they are using (which the provider is unlikely to tell them about) or it could be a local net issue that they wouldn't be aware of unless those affected speak out about it.

 

 

 

And I heartily accept that the chances are you've already tried this, so please don't think I'm trying to preach to the choir on this. Just double checking is all.

But he's complaining that he's lagging MORE on a AUSTRALIAN server, the country in which he lives, than a CANADIAN server. And, last time I checked, no Australian location is farther from another Australian location than it is from Canada.

That has precisely what to do with anything? Until the day Jagex wires an OC3 line straight to every subscribers house, they can't do one darn thing about lag between your computer and yours. And an OC3 line would probably result in a rise in subscription prices, prompting more ranting.

Yea, thats why they need more PVP worlds, I'm not saying move them to another continent.

 

More lag = horrible (especially in PVP worlds). They need more PVP worlds.

Look at the population - PVP words rarely break 1300, and usually hover around 1000. US has far, FAR more players then any other continent - it gets the lions share of the worlds, including PVP.

Most people will lag less, so the average player will be better off, plus less players generally means less PJing.

There is only one members PK world in the US. The fewer people in the world the more likely training places etc. will be deserted, making RWT and potential farming very, very easy. 1k people per server will make for essentially no lag, and Jagex can't put a server near every single playing location - it's not their fault if your getting a crappy connection! Even if they split it into 4 members worlds, you would probably end up with 3 in north american and 1 in Europe. Jagex is making smart business decisions - their updates are for the majority of players.

If there were more PVP worlds, more people would go on them to skill, etc, because there would be less people, and it would "roughly" even out.

 

 

 

And i don't even have a bad connection, its the fact that if your half way across the world from the server, you are going to get lots of ping, no matter what your connection is.

 

 

 

I'm sure most australians wouldn't care if one of the aussy worlds were turned into PVP Worlds, it wouldn't affect anyone else, and it wouldn't cost jagex anything.

 

 

 

Jagex may be a business, but they have stated multiple times they want there players to have fun, in PVP worlds i can only really get kills or "have fun" By pjing, any real fight i get into i can never weapon switch fast enough, etc.

Because all skilling areas are already almost empty. If they are completely empty, training will be simply too easy with virtually no risk of PKers.

 

 

 

You can stop the whole 'lag on a far away server' thing. I usually use australia servers, and I live in the US. It adds at most 80ms of ping time, roughly what most internet connections experience anyway.

 

 

 

Jagex is a buisness, with ONE goal: Making money. They will do whatever they need to to establish the long term security of that goal.

australian servers lag for me too! but that's what i expect living directly on the opposite side of the planet...

I don't DC. But that dosent stop the fact that i have MS lag.

 

 

 

You may not notice it, but there is definitely a slight difference.

 

 

 

I have adsl 2+ at the moment, which although its hardly the best internet in the world, i think is passable.

Run a ping on, say, google.com. Start -> run -> cmd -> ping google.com -t. I average 93ms ping for location close to me. Adding an extra 80 or so MS of ping time on isn't even going to be noticable in RS; the average human reaction time is over 300 MS.

 

 

 

That doesn't even change the fact that he's getting massive lag on a server near him and little on one across the world - he's experiencing it because of a bad server between him and Jagex. It's as unfixable as calling up the Air Force and demanding they remove a lighting storm so it doesn't interfere with your TV reception.

I agree, i have the worst possible game play every time i play it. I stay away from these worlds as much as possible, i prefer playing on the tip it homeworld anyways the people are nicer and i get no lag whatsoever.

Ehh, like I said he's got a bad hop somewhere on his route that's giving him lag, something like http://www.traceroute.org/ might help him out with that.

 

 

 

Still, it's not rantworthy; it's a problem with his connection, unique to him, with nothing Jagex can do to solve it.

It's not about how close one is to a server (physically), it's about how direct their connection is to that particular server. It could so happen that you have to go through dozens of other stops on your way to that server (trust me, it happens), which explains the latency. It's also how you get a significantly reduced latency on a different server that's physically tens of thousands of kilometers away.
