Anyone remember Jagex's "Java Music" section?

Those of you who knew about Jagex since the very early days may remember the "Java Music" section on the company's website. Unfortunately, the section was removed some time in early 2001, but an archived version is available at the following link: http://web.archive.org/web/200101121748 ... usic1.html

Andrew basically wrote an applet that allowed users to play XM files on their websites. For those who don't know, XM is one of the many file formats for module files, which are often associated with old school electronic music. The music on the archived page no longer works, but fortunately, I had downloaded them a long time ago. To play XM files, you will need a program like Plouf's ModPlayer, VLC media player or ModPlug Player.

I have put together a ZIP file that contains the music, along with the applet: http://www.mediafire.com/?qryim4ntowd

The songs are:

Chase to the Edge (chase.xm) - written by Andrew in August 1997. This is one of my favorites.

ACG Depth (depth.xm) - written by Andrew in February 1997. This track has a jazzy but electronic feel to it. I presume 'ACG' stands for Andrew Christopher Gower.

Track 7 (track7.xm) - written by Andrew in July 1997. This is more of a "rave-ish" song. I always picture a really loud techno club whenever I hear this song.

Vertigo (vertigo.xm) - written by Andrew in March 1997. This seems to be some sort of trance song. It's not related to the Vertigo games, though.

Bounga (bounga.xm) - not written by Andrew. It was written by someone called "moby_of_sanity" in early 1992. Now that's old school! It's a bit hard to describe this track.

Beneath Dignity (beneath.xm) - not written by Andrew, but someone called "mr.man/andromeda" in 1991. I've not sure "mr.man/andromeda" refers to one or two people. It is a slow piano ballad but it later picks up speed, along with more instruments.

Distant Call (distant.xm) - written by "mr.man/andromeda" in 1993. It's mostly a slow piano ballad.

Under pressure (underp.xm) - written by "Snap/Arkham." It's hard to describe this tune.

Victory (victory.xm) - there seems to be no information about the author, but this tune was definitely not written by Andrew.

Farlander (farland.xm) - same as above. I really like this song; it gives me visions of driving on a country road on a motorcycle through pastures, fields and windmills, like somewhere in Denmark.

Some of these tracks are very rare and I don't know of anyone else who has them. If you like them, be sure to pass them to your friends!

I've also included the applet that Jagex originally provided. If you look at the logo in the xmplayer folder, you will see something very interesting: Jagex did not stand for Java Gaming Experts in the early days, but Java Audio + Graphics Extension!

I've also included the soundtrack for the original Vertigo game. In the original file, there are two tracks - one for the overworld and one for the main menu. Some XM players could not handle this, so I've split the song into two separate files.

about the meaning of jagex i remember reading about them somewhere awhile ago (when just researching about java gaming not stalking andrew) and I believe that those extentions he made are the basis of runescape but have probably been improved upon vastly since the originals, even if they arent used in runecape im pretty sure the 3d model editor he made was expanded to make the jagex "in-house" tools they talk about.

not trying to take over post but, they should add a music player to runescape. It would be really helpful
