Themes....

 

I was thinking about doing a portraiture theme, but would everyone be ok with that, posting photos of people? You'd have to make sure the person being photographed is ok with it, unless it's street photography. But yeah, i love taking photos of people, it came to me straight away. The thing is that probably something around 90% of all photos are of people, happy snaps etc, but it's rare that you find photos that really pop. So that'd the challenge, to take a picture of a person that means something more than every other happy snap on myspace/facebook/what ever you use. If people don't like the idea, i can choose something else i suppose.

I think that idea is quite hard. Any others?

Portraiture sounded good, I just think it's finding someone/having the balls to take pictures of people is the hard part.

Even though i have access to a studio where i could get some really decent shots i don't think any of my friends would be happy with me doing that...

Another thing i want to raise is "Unmanipulated and Manipulated"...

 

 

 

Personally i see 'Unmanipulated' as a picture coming straight from the camera without any editing whatsoever besides cropping.

 

In the beginning of some of these threads this is described, but i don't think it should be allowed.

 

Colour adjustments, patching, shadowing/highlights, exposure adjustments etc all seem to be perfectly acceptable if they are on a minor scale, however these minor adjustments (manipulations imo) can make a massive difference to the outcome of an image. Just changing the saturation can make an image look twice as good.

 

All the pictures i enter are 100% untouched, and that's the way i think it should be.

 

 

 

What do you guys think? To me it just seems both the categories should be merged together because people are using photoshop, therefore they are both for manipulated photos?

I don't think any of my friends would volunteer to be photographed either. And taking photos of strangers is not my thing. :S

 

About your suggestion - kingjoe, I think it's a good one. The manipulated photos are usually only adjustments and not actually mixes of photos.

 

I think it would be simpler with just one category (and since the winner has to chose next theme, which winner has to chose if there are 2 categories like in this case?) and possibly get even better quality entries.

 

 

 

And yes, I think we already had a street theme during last year.

Ha i wasn't thinking along the lines of studio portrait photography, rather any photo where a person is the main or major subject. Just mucking around taking photos, my example would be this:

I had no intention of taking a great shot hah, it just happened. spontaneous portraiture if you like.

 

 

 

I'll think of something else then if you like. I was thinking along the lines of an object, and you could take any sort of photo that you liked, as long as it included said object, such as a pen, or a chair, or a pair of sunglasses. I'm liking the chair.

 

 

 

EDIT: Btw, i want this months theme to be something remotely challenging. Something that you have to get out and photograph, not something like flowers, where you can just go out into your backyard and take a photo in five minutes.

I remember I introduced the 'street scenes' competition (in which only 2 people entered?) but that is very different than the Street Photography I'm aiming at. Treamus and Chris Weeks are two of my favorite street-photographers, please check them out :)

 

 

 

If I could choose, I would go with Street photography. Its challenging, but great fun to do.

 

 

 

Other themes that people might like:

 

 

 

- 'One Colour' (Participants enter photos that contain a color that fills up at least 50% of the photo)

 

- 'Favorite object (Photograph an object that you like in an interesting way)

 

- 'Depth of Field' (Post photos with an interesting depth of field)

Well typically, "unmanipulated" is viewed as only making adjustments that could have been done in a studio with film photography. That is to say some minor tweaks to the things you mentioned (colour adjustments, saturation, contrast, sharpening, exposure, etc.).

 

 

 

I personally do things a little differently. Whenever you take a digital JPEG picture, the camera automatically makes some adjustments for you (some of the ones mentioned above, mainly some sharpening and contrast). I choose to shoot in a format called RAW (instead of JPEG). By shooting in this format, the camera doesn't make ANY adjustments for you. It just saves the "raw" data of the image. That way, I can make all of my own modifications on the computer to get the image just the way I want it. So in the end, I probably do as few modifications as the camera would have done for me, but I can do them slightly differently. I usually just increase the contrast by one, sometimes the saturation by one and then the sharpening by 2-4 (of course that may not mean much to you because all programs have different scales. But it's not that much).
