Smallest KB size for an image?

.gif would probably give the smallest filesize, though the quality will be poor. In terms of tradeoff between filesize and quality, .png is the way to go. Quality wise it's almost identical to a bitmap (.bmp), but takes up a lot less space.

PNG are big files. A high-quality JPEG does the same thing and is still a lot smaller. Only use PNG when you have transparency.

OH S***! He/she/it is back!

I'm guessing OP is only using paint and wanted a quick solution, so png. I'm doubtful he wants to load up GIMP each time he takes a screenshot, it's too much effort.

You can still see some loss in colour information even with a high-quality JPEG. JPEG is lossy compression so no matter how little you compress it, you're still going to lose colour information. PNG is lossless, and you can often get more desirable results at a smaller filesize than a high-quality JPEG if you know what options to use compression-wise.

People shouldn't really need to worry about filesize anymore. Unless you've got a strict limit, lossless compression of media is much more desirable than lossy in my opinion. Faster Internet connections are available these days, so the difference shouldn't affect most people.

@Dracion: Saving as PNG with Paint always gives you about a 2MB file. :l

If you're really fussy about filesize then just bloody save as JPEG with Paint - but don't complain about the quality.

I think there's something wrong with your paint. I always use paint for screenshots and most of the time I save to .png format, and the usual size I get out of them is much less than 1MB.

+1. I can easily take 1280 x 1024 screenshots and get about a 500kb filesize. Even on my slow internet (20kb/s upload) it doesn't take very long to upload to tinypic/imageshack at all.

i've got a few little applications to crush .png files even further than gimps level 9 compression can do. i'd recommend googling around for some .png compression files, such as pngcrush or optipng or pngfix.
