Quinton595
Hey guys... My friend's trying to pick out a computer.. The top two choices are: Studio XPS 435 Desktop Computer. http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/desktop-studio-xps-435?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&~oid=ca~en~70702~studdt_xps_435_en_lto_1~~ Pros: i7 processor 1 TB hard drive 8 GB ram! at 1066MHz, DDR3 Cons: i7 processor is at 2.66GHz, while the 630's is at 3.00GHz 100$ more expensive  Or the: Studio XPS 630 Desktop Computer. http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_630?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&~oid=ca~en~70702~xpsdt_630_en_feat_1~~ Please note that the XPS 630 got extremely high reviews in Consumer Reports magazine (In fact it was actually the highest-rated computer.) Pros: Consumer Reports Reviews. *Note Above* Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz 100$ cheaper  Cons: Processor is Duo cored, but he needs a Quad Core 500GB hard drive, which is half the size of the 435's 6GB ram, which is 2 GB less than the 435, only 800MHz, DDR2 (435's is DDR3 @ 1066MHz) Now it's almost obvious that the 435 is the way to go. But those Consumer Reports are very highly-credentialed. It's hard to ignore them. And the 630 was the Highest rated computer! Any comments, suggestions or what not is appreciated. ilya
Definatelly the First one, i7 920 will run much faster then E8400, even though it's clock speed is less (+ it's duo core). Farthermore you can easily overclock the 920 to 4.0Ghz and it'll be amazing. Even though you won't notice much of a difference after 4GB of ram, it's always nice to futureproof yourself for a couple of years + it has a higher speed. 1TB is double the 500GB, so you have more room to store files. Go with the first one for sure, even thought it's 100$ more :) #1: 8.3/10 - graphics card isn't the best. #2: 7/10 - will still run anything you throw at it, but not the best processor + graphics card. _________________________________________________________________________________ Althought you could build the same computer for about 300$ less if you buy the parts yourself. Ask Nadril or OldJoe if you're interested in this. Or go to newegg.com and check the part out yourse.f
Sbrideau
Imo, you should go away from Dell and get an Asus/HP computer. Best is always to build it yourself though.
Quinton595
How would you rate the Graphic card? He was very turned off by that As well.. We picked out great pieces, and a 4850 card, for 1100 (I think)

Nadril
The first one, but upgrade the video card if he's going to be gaming.
Quinton595
Damn.. So it is relatively bad.. The problem is the 4850 is an extra 200 bucks.. which he doesn't have.. Other than building a computer (Which we are looking into again) is there any other option? EDIT: Then again, he's not a hardcore gamer.. he gave me a list of the games he plays.. Halo2 -- Spore -- Combat Arms -- Need4Speed -- Eve-Online Should those work on max settings with the 4670?
Quinton595
Hey guys.. So we were looking on Newegg for some pieces.. using the knowledge I gained from building my last comp *Thanks Nadril and Oldjoe!* Im tired from looking over the web for so long.. so im not gonna bother making nice links. : Total: $1,392.51 CAD Case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811146050 Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6822136073 Graphic Card: *I personally love this one.. its 1gb 4850* http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814102802 PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817153052 Memory: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820231098 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6813128359 CPU: *Nice and fast..* http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6819115130 Now.. I've spent hours cross-checking EVERYTHING. The only thing that makes me unsettled.. is the Memory.. its 800MHz, but the motherboard is 1366+ / 1066.. and i don't know if that's a recommendation, or what's REQUIRED.. and one last thing, the Graph. Card says: PCI Express based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard 450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended I really don't know what they mean with the X16 thing.. Anyways.. if you guys could do some more cross-checking on the pieces *Take your time!* we would be very grateful.. Thanks again.
Sbrideau
Only checkin fast here, but that Power supply is a bit on the low side for the number of Amps on the 12V rail. You should also go for more than 2GB RAM (well, you didn't metion buying that 2GB pack more than once), since it's quite low for today's average amount of RAM. OldJoe
So does he wants a prebuilt or DIY computer? I suggest prebuilt. I'm really weary about DIY computer for him - seeing how the last topic ended up for you... Corsair 400w psu has 30a@one 12v rail which is more than that oen you posted. Well i'm drunk and i'm gonna sleep now. Adios amigos! Hoho, i write pretty well now! The computer turned out awesome. However, this time my friend has a larger budget than I did, so we can make a better comp. And the Corsair 400. I remember from the last topic everyone said to go for 450 min and around 500 if I could.. This comp will use even more power. So thanks for the info, but il look for a better 500W one. PLEASE bare with my antics! Thanks again! dave0293
I'm not really that knowledgeable about building computers, but if I were you I would get a copy of Windows 7. Its free and good for a year. You could also update to 1 TB for not that much more. Sorry I couldn't be much of a help on the rest of the components.
Dracion1
Personally I'd swap your CPU and graphics card for these two, you'll get better performance out of games: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6819115041 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814102801 - SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB You can always overclock the CPU if you want to. GPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814161259, unless he plays games at 1920x1080 the 1gb isn't necessary. This card will do fine. PSU: Such weird prices. VX550 - 108$, TX750 - 110$ lol. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817702010, BFG 550w - 80$. Optical drive: Some read/write cd/dvd with sata. Cooler: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6835233014 - 30$ This is what i'd do. Otherwise buy one of the prebuilt computers. Oldjoe has forgiven my last topic ;) Anyways those were some interesting Links. I swapped out the HDD with yours, 'cause they were practically identical but yours had a bigger cache. The Video card.. Is the 1Gb only for larger resolutions? Because if it is, then you're right, i should go with a cheaper 512mb. I added yours to my Shopping cart, because from the reviews, its fantastic. (Seriously though, could someone explain to me the resolution thing?) Now.. the CPU.. I've always.. Always been an intel-er so switching to amd will be strange.. however could you expand on my choice? I know the I7 is technically a quad core, so shouldn't a faster quad > slower i7? I added both the mobo and CPU to my whistlist, just to check out a bit more. The PSU is.. Good, but Im holding off on it for now to do some more in-depth comparison in reviews and stuff.. Chances are il take yours instead. The Optical drive Im looking at cause yesterday, all the good ones were out of stock. And Is the cooler necessary? Thanks for putting up with me. OldJoe
Topic has changed from prebuilt to DIY as before lol. Yes, that's right about the memory size. 1650x1050 (or whatever it is), goes perfectly fine with 512mb. When you get to higher resolutions, then you want 1gb or more. Also depends on the game, some games are more hungry than others. It's quite funny, they usually market low-end cards like 9400GT and HD4350 with 1gb memory (towards you're avarage Joe, who thinks more memory=faster). But such a card won't be able to utilize it, the bus is too slow (usually 64bit) and the memories are usually just DDR2. The Phenom 2 are in a great price-range. Your Intel comparison would be something like a Q6600 (+a bit of OC). But i wouldn't buy it. The P2 is faster in most applications than their respective Intel one. The i7 compared to it's C2Q counter part is *generally* *10-20%* faster (depends on what you test). To put it simple: New technology - faster =) Read some article about i7 to understand how it works. The cooler i posted isn't expensive, and it will keep your chip more chilled, better OC potential and lower noise. I thought this was for you friend...? I get the feeling it is for you lol. If you want some prebuilt options - just say. He decided to accept your heatsink, 'cause there's no harm in having it. And we're staying with our other PSU. One last thing I dont remember, If I buy a DVD/cd burner for him, will I need to also get a CD/DVD Reader, because I couldn't find the option for the combo ones. OldJoe
If my calculation is correct, your psu gives about 340w combined on the two 12v rails. Mine outputs 430. I suggest you add the 10$.
