August 25, 200520 yr You can get it here: http://www.google.com/talk/ It was just released today. You need a gmail account to sign on. I doubt it'll make any impact into the AIM/MSN/Yahoo portion of instant messengers, but I like it. The audio is really clear for me, and the layout is really simple. It's pretty plain and there aren't really any features, but I heard they'll be added eventually. So here's google's next step. From being a search engine, to an email provider, to having all these maps, and now it's own instant messenger.

August 25, 200520 yr Theres a thread in Tech and Comps about google talk. I personally think that another IM system is a terrible idea. I know pyro said this in the other thread bul ill say it here too. normally competition drives innovation and improves quality but thats not the case with IM software. All it does is reduce the number of users on each. Google Talk is also very featureless. I certainly wont be switching any time soon. And accepting stuff from google is pretty safe, even if blindly. And if something happens, hold them responsible. And if you don't believe it, type in the address manually. Google doesn't care about your RS account, not to mention the legal trouble they would get into if it was found out they intended to include trojans with their downloads.

August 25, 200520 yr I agree with Merc. Look at the features, not the company. What makes Google Talk better than MSN Messenger? Nothing really. Google can't expect to go mainstream with competitive progams just yet. It'll definintely be awhile before you see emails @gmail.com everywhere, or people logging onto Google Talk rather than MSN Messenger. To add to that, many of their programs are still just beta anyways, so if you want to actually use it, there's no real point in dling now anyways...
August 25, 200520 yr As much as i love most of the Google stuff, compared to messenger, it sucks, end of story. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
August 25, 200520 yr It's just not gonna replace MSN for me. Even though Google >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Microsoft. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
August 26, 200520 yr I hate the fact that there are more and more IM services coming out. It seems that the number of users isn't driven by the featureset or flexibility, but rather by the marketing of the particular IM protocol. For instance, kids my age (14) all use AIM simply because it was the first and because it has television commercials. However, it is pretty obvious to more enlightened users (read: forum users, etc.) that MSN is better - better voicechat, fewer sex spammers in chatrooms, no need to create a chatroom to have multiple people, bigger buddy icons, less intrusive ads, better webcam integration, better email service and integration, etc. And then there's Jabber and Yahoo, which few people use anyway. This, in turn, contributes to the need and demand for multi-protocol clients such as Trillian and GAIM. Although these seem to ease the problem of dilution of users, there are still shortcomings (the inability to make multi-user conversations with users on different services, etc.), and it would be easier if a good IM solution got a foothold and somehow grabbed the marketshare. If Google does that then I'm onboard. If not, then I won't use it, since it'll just be 10 MB more of my computer's memory wasted on something I use 10 minutes a day. And, have people heard of this nifty thing called the TELEPHONE? Unless you're making what would be a long-distance call, Google Talk is effectively useless, all around. handed me TWO tissues to clear up. I was like "i'm going to need a few more paper towels than that luv"

August 26, 200520 yr I tried GoogleTalk today, and the quality of the conversation was high. Not as high as a phone conversation, but significantly better than Skype for example. GoogleTalk had 5 bars in the corner of the conversation window when the connection was best, which went down when the connection was poor - much like a cellphone does. This was useful, because if you saw the number of bars drop, you knew that the other person probably wasn't able to hear you, so you could repeat what you just said. August 27, 200520 yr :x  i dotn have windows 2000, or xp... god danm wondows 98... why wont my dad buy a new one.... oh well it looks preatty usless at the moment. win98 wasnt that bad, when i first got xp i wanted my 98 back. now it doesnt make a difference, nothing really special with xp, at least not that i know of because i am a computer newb  . anyways, you can use google talk with trillian pro, through the jabber plugin and setting somesettings. but since i dont know anyone with google talk, and i dont have trillian pro, im still not going to use it.
August 27, 200520 yr And, have people heard of this nifty thing called the TELEPHONE? Unless you're making what would be a long-distance call, Google Talk is effectively useless, all around. Yeah - I was quite impressed with the sound quality. Like dusqi said, better than other programs I've tried... and if you have a long distance relationship like I do, free computer talking is good :D I agree with Merc. Look at the features, not the company. What makes Google Talk better than MSN Messenger? Nothing really. As far as I can tell, I think that's what google was going for. People have been complaining that with each update to AIM and MSN, there just keep on being more intrusive advertisements and more annoying features that you dont need, that slow it down. Google's keeping it simple with easy to use chat - and that's it. Personally, I like MSN better for IMing. Still, Google Talk is useful for me for the voice chat :D Everybody hug and spread the love :D
