God forbid, people of a certain heritage protesting the inhumanity that is occuring in their place of heritage?

They have every right to stage a protest.

Yes, they do. The problem is how they have been going about staging their protests. The Tamil people in Canada enjoy many freedoms that they did not have in Shi Lanka. Unfortunately, they have been abusing those freedoms and that is the problem. They are drawing attention to their cause, yes, but I feel that they are inadvertently hurting that cause by going about it in this fashion.

Any person in this country has the right to protest anything they like. You apply for a permit, you hold your protest in the established area, and you can protest that Hitler wasn't awarded the Order of Canada if you want. The problem with the recent Tamil protests (and yes, I know there is a difference between the Tamil people and the Tamil Tigers (which is a recognized terrorist organization in Canada)) is that they have not been holding their protests properly. A few weeks ago they blocked off several blocks of Wellington St. in downtown Ottawa, right in front of Parliament Hill (ironically enough, Parliament Hill is where protests are supposed to be held). Last week they blocked off the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto, holding hundreds, if not thousands, of people hostage for several hours. That's right, I said "hostage". The people stuck on the Gardiner Expressway were held there against their will by people who had no right to do so and could not leave. It may not have been at gunpoint, but it sure seemed like hostage-taking to me.

Regardless of what they are protesting for or about, the Tamils are going about it in entirely the wrong way and are only stirring up public dissent. If they are looking for support for their cause, this is not the way to do it.

Hm, this is a useless post, but I'd like to say while I was in Washington DC this weekend, I saw one of these protests. I'll see if I can ask my friend for the pictures he took.

It was right in front of the White House, and most of the posters they had were of very graphic killings and such. Although, I didn't understand what they were chanting.

I saw that exact same protest when I was there on Thursday. They've been at it for awhile

I was there on Friday.

At the same time, we obsessively took pictures of the White House. But my friends compared the protesters posters to a certain part of Encyclopedia Dramatica. -.-

I remember my class owned the protestors. As they chanted hate messages about Obama, we had the chorus group stand at the fence and sing The Star Spangled Banner (and very well, IMO).

It shut them up for about 5 minutes

I wonder how they managed to arrive at the conclusion that Obama is responsible for ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka, of all places.

This is a bit off topic, but by any chance did either of you two see the anti-nuclear hippie there? In the past couple years I have been to D.C several times, and this old hippie is always out in front of the White House protesting Nuclear weapons.

Haha, my textbook is horrible. It's from the 90's, but still, there's a damn limit. I know history is written by the winner, but the guys who wrote mine were basically Team America [bleep] yeah!. I'm pretty sure it's just an edited version from the 80's, since hardly anything after that is covered. I mean, it is a geography book, but still. They focus a lot more on when other countries are hanging out killing people. And the Marshall Plan and our aid to Greece and Turkey to "fight the Communist agenda" (actual quote) are the second coming of Jesus.

Hilarious.

Luckily, my AP US history textbook wasn't like that. It just stated information. However, I kind of thought the tone was a little sarcastic during the Colonial part of the book when it talked about the riots and the Sons of Liberty. It didn't try to butter up America's image at all; it simply showed the viewpoints during those time periods. However, my teacher WAS biased and openly criticized and poked fun at Britain for having a socialistic government.

It's a lot better when you get college books. Those aren't very biased (well, in my case, anyways...)

I was in toronto the other day, and some little girl asked my friend: "do you want to sign this petition to save the tamils?". He thought she said "camels" so he signed it.

Wanna get them out? Urge your govnuh to help bring peace in Sri Lanka.

In civilized countries we call that blackmail.

1. It's not blackmail if you don't hold something over their head.

2. Why wouldn't you try to go for peace?

Seriously, they're protesting for a reason, and in this case it's a damn good one.

Why in the hell should I care about what's happening in Sri Lanka?

When it boils down to it we're a global community, [bleep]wad.

Oh, my goodness, I am SO bloody sorry for being such a... [bleep]wad...?

Sri Lanka could turn into a nuclear wasteland right this very moment and I'd bet you anything it wouldn't affect me in the slightest.

It wouldn't affect you because you lack empathy.

What if Vancouver turned into a nuclear wasteland? Edmonton? Winnipeg? Would you be affected by it or care for it? What about someplace in the United States? Houston? Los Angeles? What about London? Berlin? Moscow? Would you view those as [cabbage] like Sri Lanka?

What's the difference?

By that logic, you wouldn't care what was nuked. So we can assume we'd nuke your internet access off the face of the planet and you wouldn't care?

Also, you have no heart/empathy. Someone probably isn't liked too much in real life.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

No, you guys just aren't responding properly.

If Sri Lanka turned into a nuclear wasteland right now, millions would die. That's unacceptable. I have no problem with the fact that they're trying to make sure more innocents aren't killed, and I support that goal whole-heartedly, but I object to the means with which they are trying to achieve it. A protest outside Queen's Park is fine. Next to the Parliament buildings? Thumbs up. But blocking the transportation of regular people is by no means the answer to their problems, and it simply makes them disliked. I had no prejudice towards Sri Lankans before they started these protests. And guess what? Now I do. I don't want innocent people to die, and I don't want Sri Lanka to turn into a nuclear wasteland. I do want them the hell off my streets, though.

But by blocking major tranportation networks, thet sure as hell got your attention didn't they? That's the idea. The guys that Flamehawk and I saw outside the White House (btw just remembered it WAS Friday, so we were both there on the same day  ), they weren't in anyone's way, and they will likely be ignored.

That's what happens when you make outrageous statements (ie. you not caring if Sri Lanka was turned into a nuclear wasteland) and don't explain your point. That is why you are constantly backtracking. Now if you made a point sensibly without being ridiculous, people would just debate the issues with you rather than getting so annoyed and personal about it.
