The effects of right-click reporting

Featured Replies

Jagex will insert the option to report players by right-clicking them in the short future. I created this thread to discuss the possible effects of this option and to see how others feel about this.

I thought of a few pros and cons for the the option and I myself think that it will be a bad idea to implement it.

Pros: Easier to report. This also means that more people who break the rules will be reported so the game will become a better game with less rule-breakers.

Cons: Wannabe Moderators. These guys will be a big problem overall. If they are given the ability to report on a large skill they will most likely do this. This will be a major setback in playing-experience as a lot of people will be unfairly muted or even banned because of this; Jagex has a tendency to give out black marks to players who simply make jokes or adress eachother in a certain way which is understood by the adressed player, but someone else overhearing them can now more easily be tempted to report them, as Jagex has already stated some time ago that making valid reports will increase the chance of being selected as a P-mod.

An example of this system in action is the clanchat "Forsakenmage". There are WBM's in there who will report everyone if they say something that can be taken out of context. As a result various players will refrain from going in this chat.

IMO this new option will only work by taking out the cons, which can only be done with a far better way of distributing black marks. This will however require a lot more people to look at all the reports(of which the amount will only increase), which is to expensive if you compare it to the pros it gives.

Maybe the new offence system will prove to be better, but they will need to show this first

I'd like to hear your opinion on this topic so don't hesitate to post ::'

[hide=a few pics]These are taken in a German world. "Regelverstoss melden" is translated as "report an offence".

There are three sides to every story: There's one side, there's the other, and there's the truth.

These seems to be being 'trial tested' on german worlds only. I think Jagex is probably trying to figure out if this would work. Chances are its going to increase report volume, so doing this on the smaller dutch player base makes sense.

I see all these comments about how people get muted because of mod wanna be's. Thing is, I have played for 5 years, and never had an offense on my account. I know people have reported me, partialy because I have said things I would definatly expect people to report because of misunderstandings. Maybe I have gotten a bit lucky, but 2 years of being cavalier with the chat (I dont mean I am insulting people. I joke around, and my sense of humor is a bit more...developed...than alot of players) has not landed me a scratch. Actualy far from it...

My point is I have some trouble beliveing that people are muted and banned just because they got reported. I think people feel that they have been unjustly muted/banned and, intentionaly or not, change their storys to reflect this. What a 13-15 year old thinks is offensive and what an adult thinks is inapropriate are very different things. I'd expect most teenagers (myself included) to be a bit numb to vulgar language and insults. Remember that adults still dont like seeing that stuff comming from young peoples mouths so its best to watch it.

Jagex is not going to punish people for being reported, and will infact take actoin against people who seemingly report falsely on purpose. If people get muted, there was a reason. Now it might not always be a good reason true, but there is a reason non the less.

I feel that this might make to much work for staff, and that the cost of additional personel could be detrimental to the company. I suppose that is for Jagex to decide, they know their finances and can obviously run a buissness. If they impliment this system on the english servers then I guess they can handel it. I should hope this will not cause a rise in questionable punishments.

I do wory about constantly seeing the abuse report option. That could definatly negitively impact the atmosphere of the game. It should not be a main focus, and as such, should not be in our faces constantly. I think this could be helpful in reporting, but I dont think we all need to be staring at the report option all the time. Thats just not healthy.

I personally don't see how it would benefit wbming too much, the pro's would be that in a crowded place like the GE, it would be alot easier to report a autotyper. The con's... well, I couldn't see any cons tbh, rule breaking is not allowed and it would be re-enforced better, I really don't see how wbming will be easier...

All I hope is that there is an option to turn off reporting, like there is to accept aid. Knowing me, I would mis click a bunch of times. I'm glad I can turn off the accept aid option, so it is the playing I remember the game as. I would just like to see it as a hideable option.

I also have never had any problems with wanna be mods. I just casually ignore them and move on with my game.

So in all honesty, I don't see a problem with it at all.

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

meh...i don't really see any bad things about this. If someone does something bad, then they should be reported regardless. Also, if people do end up becoming moderators like that, then they'll regret it anyways. Most mods i know say the crown is a curse, as it makes other people treat them differently. Another interesting fact is that jagex is probably gonna introduce right clicking for a whole lot more stuff, such as entering people's houses, and picking certain rewards from minigames. Why shouldn't they have right click reporting too?

div>
I don't see how it would lead to more WBMs. If someone's wants to WBM, they'll WB, whether or not they can right-click or not.

Also, you sure it's not a player mod in the pic?

It's not. Also, I think it'd be a good implantment, but there's going to be too many options that you'd get when you click a player's name.

Three months banishment to 9gag is something i would never wish upon anybody, not even my worst enemy.

Oh jeez.

WBMing is going to be stronger than ever.

Mind explaining how? Most WBMs I knew of reported in high traffic clan chats, where you wouldn't have the right click report option anyway. It drove a lot of people out of using clan chats; an innocent or joke phrase can be fairly damning when it's the only thing in the chat.

I think it'll still have more pros than cons. (In terms of usefulness and problems.) Honestly, many times when someone tells me I've been reported, (I never swear or do anything wrong, so I was like, what the?) a few days later THAT person gets banned. And I've made a few reports before, and I found the system annoying, considering how long it takes to select everything.

Oh right, by the way, I'm a girl. No more calling me a guy you lot~

If everyone has the power to report that easily, everyone will be on their toes and force themselves to not use offensive language and break the rules. What's wrong with people not breaking the rules?

If you wanna use offensive language, or unnappropriate language for kids, find some other form of channels to get the message across. Clan chats are designed for RS and RS rules are mostly PG. This is annoying, but we all have to live with it. I'm all for a censor and rules compared to unsupervised chats where you get the worst from everyone.

I'm thinking that Jagex have thought of the cons. Using this I expect that they will keep an eye on those who send in constant reports and the severity of reports:

Did it REALLY need to be reported?

Are they just reporting for the fun of it?

Everything will be logged so that should easily get rid of most of the cons. Out of context is hard. The only real way I can see 'solving' this issue would be to create a "Mature" server so to speak. Then again some people classify mature as using profanity like there's no tomorrow. There's really no way to fully eliminate it, but Jagex probably won't take action unless it's really something vulgar you have been reported for. Hopefully.

I've been wanting this feature for years, I always thought it would be a great implementation and now you actually get a box and everything. (I don't play Runescape a whole lot now!!)

the only real, tangible effect i can see this having is makin it easier to report spambots. Wil it increase the number of WBMs? yes, but not enough to make a difference.
